Every culture has had its own mythology of vampire type creatures each with their own distinctive characteristics. They were red-eyed monsters with green or pink hair in china or in Greece they had the upperbody of a woman but the lower of a winged serpent. The once we are familiar with today
are based on the Eastern European myths. The stories originally came from
far east and got passed on via the trade routes to the Mediterranean.
The traits that we know vampires to have which actually came from the
original myths are the drinking of blood, return from the death, praying
on humans at night but some concepts are have been added more recently
like the wearing of evening cloths, capes with tall collars and turning
into bats. In the 9th and 10th centuries causes of vampirism were believed to be, being born with a cau, sharp teeth (fangs) or tail, being concived on certain days, irregular death, improper burial rituals. They also believed that they could prevent someone being turned into a vampire by placing a crucifix in the coffin, putting a block under their chin or staking the hart. Once a vampire had risen it could be killed by stakeing the hart, decapitation, burning repeating the buerial ritural or exorcism. Gypsie Myths added to the alredy fluresing vampire stories in the 14th centry. theybelived that a dead person sometimes returned to feed off thir family. They also placed steal in the coffin and through the hart witch may have lead to latter belifes about vampires not likeing silver The conection between bats and Vampires did not come about untill the 16th century when Spanish settlers landed in American and came into contact with the Vampire bats and noticed the simmilaritys between them and the mythicle charecters. Even after all of this the myths of
vampires were not widly know throughout Europ untill the 18th centry when
there was a massive vampire scare. even goverment officials were involved
in the stakeing of vampires. Vampire only came into the english languge
in 1732 when a German report got translated. For the first time Westen
scholors started acsepting vampire as obosed to simply stateing they were
superstition . The scar ended when Austrian Empress Marie Theresa sent
her personal physisan to investigate he said they didnt exsist. she then
outlawed the opening of graves and it ended the scare but by that time
evreyone knew the myth.
