Greenlee begins to unpack her things into her new apartment. The rain grew deeper by the minute, as it hit the grounds with more friction. Greenlee puts away her last suitcase in her closet and goes to sit by the window watching the rain. She was finally free, she thought to herself. Free from Leo. From her father. After a long time of pawning over Leo, and trying to regain a bond with her father, she was left all alone just to realize that they were both the biggest vexations in her life. She continued to watch the view, as raindrops tapped her window; she snuggles her sweater closer to her, her arms crossing her chest. She was on her own, yet for once in her life she didn’t cry or moan; it was like a part of her had changed. Greenlee gave out a loud sigh and tried to remember the last time she was truly happy. When was that? When her and Jake were arguing over who was going to clean up the loft. She softly laughed to herself, as she thought of Jake. After a few minutes, she got up and opened her fridge, only to find an apple and a container of Philadelphia Cream Cheese. With a fatalistic expression, she picked up her coat and umbrella and left her apartment.
Who can say where the road goes
Where the day flows
Only time
And who can say if your love grows
As your heart chose…
Around the corner of Pine Valley, Jake sat in a bench on the park, staring out into the distance. The rain poured openly on his hair, face, and entire ensemble; but he didn’t care. He was too occupied with resent and hurt to care about the damn rain. All he wanted to do was find a normal life, and in the end he got the complete opposite. Pathetic, he thought to himself, a successful, bright man who can’t even make a marriage go right. He wanted all the hurt to go away, he wanted salvation. Jake could hardly remember the last time he felt the slightest bit of salvation. Awkwardly enough, it was with Greenlee at his loft. “Jake?” said a voice from behind.
Only time. Who can say when your heart sighs
As your love flies
Only time
Jake turned around to find, “Greenelee.”
Greenelee came forward with a slightly plagued expression on her face, “Jake, your soaking wet.”
Jake looked at for a moment. Greenelee had always been a mystery to him; at first he had trouble understanding when she cared and when she didn’t, or when she lies and when she tells the truth. But after deeply looking at her eyes, he noticed that she cared. Greenelee noticed that he made no motion to speak, “Jake, did you hear me. You’re soaking wet.” He stares at her again, and gives a small sniffle, “Yeah, my waters out and I needed a shower.” He said sarcastically, trying to hide his depressed feeling, but Greenelee saw right threw him.
And who can say why your heart cries
When your love lies
Only time
“Jake, c’mon, you can’t stay here.” She motions for him to get up.
“I’m not ready to go anywhere, yet. Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”
She stares at him intently. After a moment, she sits next to him, and holds up the umbrella to cover both of them under the rain.
“Greenelee, you don’t have to stay.”
“I want to,” she said, a little too quickly.
“Okay,” he nods. They sat together under the rain, for minutes, until either of them spoke. Perhaps it was the silence that grew into serenity, as they both sat close to one another and stared out into the distance together. Finally, being the person she was Greenelee decided to break the ice, “How’ve you been?” She asks him.
“Fine. You?”
“I’ve been good.”
Jake nods his head; “You look good.”
Greenelee gives a grin, “I thought you’d be used to that by now.”
Jake slightly smiled, there were some things about Greenelee Smythe that would never change.
“I heard that you and Mia got a divorce…I’m sorry.”
Jake looks at her, “Why, you never liked her?”
“That’s not true---okay, so I never liked the little pixie stick. And she didn’t seem like your type to begin with. But since your hurting, I’m sorry.”
“I’m hurting,” he slightly chortled, “Yeah, poor me, just couldn’t make another marriage work. Right? What makes you think I’m hurting?” Jake said sliding his hand threw his wet, dark hair.
“Uh, maybe because your sitting out in the rain. And it doesn’t take a medical degree to know how to get ammonia. ---So, what did she do?”
“What?”
“Well, something had to have happened. So, what’d she do?”
Jake shakes his head, “Goodness Greenelee, do you find it your job to put your surgically altered nose into everyone’s business?”
“What did you just say about my nose?” She remarks, making Jake roll his eyes.
“You know what---never mind—why don’t you just—just go back to Leo. He’s probably waiting for you.”
“Well, not that it’s any of your business, but Leo and I are over.”
“For now, you mean.”
“No, Jake. It’s really over.”
Jake gives a smirk, “Yeah, right. C’mon, Greenelee, I know how obsessed you are with him. Even though you probably know that he’ll always hurt you, in the end your going to walk straight back into him.”
“Don’t go over on me, Jake! I couldn’t help falling in love with Leo, or you,” she says not realizing that she had just confessed her love to Jake, “And I’m not obsessed with him.”
“The hell you are. You rejected me for him. You turned your whole life around, for his sake.”
“Yeah, maybe I did a little. But I never meant to hurt you. And at least I didn’t go as far as to get into a marriage, which is more than I can say for you.”
“Don’t turn this around on me,” he stands up.
“Hey—you’re the one who started it. You didn’t even try to fight for me, Jake.”
“What would’ve happened if I did? It wouldn’t have made a difference.”
“How do you know? Maybe, it would’ve,” She replied standing up with fierce motion.
“I told you I loved you!” He said in a loud tenor.
“Yeah, and then you took it back. Jerk,” Greenelee extended.
“You wanna know, what would’ve happened if I did fight for you. You would’ve just played your games, and break all the rules.”
The rain came down harshly on both their faces, but neither of them noticed.
Greenelee looks downward at the ground, “Yeah I probably would have. But don’t you know how I’ve always felt about you. There was something I got from you that I never got from Leo or anyone else. You---you changed me in a way.”
“Yeah, well I have to admit. You kind of rubbed off on me too.”
“I did?” Greenelee’s eyebrow arched.
“Well, if it wasn’t for your fallacious advice, I would’ve never gotten Hayward out of town.”
“True,” her grin reappeared.
They looked at eachother, in another moment of uttered silence.
“I better get going,” Jake moves towards Greenelee and kisses her cheek; Greenelee feels her pulse rising at a higher proximity as she moves closer to him.
“I hope you do find someone who makes you happy, Jake,” she says sadly, with her cheek still close to his.
Who can say when the roads meet
That love might be
In your heart
And who can say when the day sleeps
If the night keeps
All your heart
“You too, Greens,” Jake said caressing her cheek with his wet hand. Greenelee moves her lips to kiss him on the cheek, but stimutaneously ends up on Jake’s lips. As they begin a passionate kiss, that intensifies as the rain kept pouring. After what seemed like a lifetime, they both pulled back out of breath. “I should go,” Greenelee tries to hide her tears as she runs off through the park, ignoring the rain. “Greenelee,” Jake calls after her.
