(by Atari - CX2613) Joystick 1 Player 3 Game Variations |
Adventure will hold a place in the history of video games as the first role playing video game. Released in 1978, this is also one of the oldest games for the Atari 2600. You are a square block (who's supposed to be a brave knight). An evil magician has stolen the Enchanted Golden Chalice from the Golden Castle and hidden it somewhere in the Kingdom. You are to find the Golden Chalice and return it to the Golden Castle. Along the way, you must face two or three dragons, find the keys to the castles, find your way through mazes and avoid a pesky bat who will take the object that you have and replace it with a different object (for example, if you have found a key, he may take it from you and replace it with a dead dragon...lucky you). Overall, this is actually a pretty cool game! The audio is weak, even for the Atari 2600. The graphics actually aren't bad for 1978 and you have good control of the block...umm....I mean brave knight. However, the real appeal is not in the audio or video, but in the idea behind the game. I don't much care for most video games today because it seems like somewhere along the way, game designers got so caught up in making games with great graphics and sound that concept and game play were forgotten. I don't think I can give a description for this game that really does it justice, so I'll leave this one to you. There are many, many copies out there and you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one at a good price. |
