Orientation Day At ROSWELL High:

Four-limbed Earthlings On One Side, Four-winged Aliens On The Other. It could also be called, MY LOCKERMATE'S AN ALIEN, for those not tuned in to the "classmates from Mars" premise of the new fall TV spooker, ROSWELL. Still, no matter how strange your own high school friends are/were, they can't compete with Jason Behr's character, Max Evans, who, along with his sister Isabel (Katherine Heigl) and best pal Michael (Brendan Fehr) descended from little green men who crashed here from space seeking shapely Earth "action". It makes that infamous Area 51 location outside Roswell, New Mexico sound like Inspiration Point.

But, even green aliens get the blues, and Max begins feeling a bit empty, having never been given all the details of his family tree. So, imagine the trauma when he falls in love with waitress Liz (Shiri Appleby), who serves up mystery dishes at the local Crashdown Cafe. To tell, or not to tell?

It makes Romeo &Juliet's dilemma look tame. Playing this role promises to be more appealing and complex for Jason who was last seen as puffy rich kid, Chris Wolfe, on DAWSON'S CREEK, and as a creepy ex-squeeze on BUFFY. The producers of ROSWELL promise a new twist on the space-scare genre, with bi-planetary relationships and hunky law enforcer, Jason Peck, who eventually catches on. Maybe if things get too out of control, Fox Muldur & Dana Scully could drop by to chaperone the intergalactic school dance.

But until then, remember, not only is the "truth" out there... but it's trying out for football and serving detention after school. Spotting "another kind of alien" washing up on shore, as the kitchen help at James Beach applauds

Vintage

There you are, in a thrift store, hunting for finds no one else in the world has. No one, well except maybe Shiri Appleby

Shiri's Secret

Teen got Roswell starlet, Shiri Appleby, to spill the beans on how she keeps her hair in tiptop shape. Her secret: Nexxus Humectress Moisturizing Conditioner. The conditioner is full of vitamins and minerals to keep her hair hydrated, so it doesn't dry out from heat styling. ($10, www.nexxus.com)

*******

E! News Daily asked Shiri about the UPN pick up of Roswell and this was her response: "It's just wonderful to be at a network that's supportive of the show...two days ago we weren't on television at all so now we have a full season ahead of us."

10/16/99 LA Times

The 20-year-old actress from Calabasas stars in her first television series, WB's sci-fi drama "Roswell," which airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m.

Life's a Beach: I love to drive up to Santa Barbara and go shopping on State Street. It's really, really beautiful and there's a lot to do there. Start with breakfast in Malibu and then just spend the day driving up the coast and hanging out in Santa Barbara. And if you're in Santa Barbara, then you have to spend part of the day at the beach.

Shop Talk: I'm not really a shopaholic, but I do like to browse with my friends. There's a huge shopping center now in Calabasas, where my parents still live, called the Calabasas Commons. On Saturday, we might go there to eat lunch. And to shop, of course. Or maybe we'll go and see a movie. They have a really nice Barnes & Noble there. I love bookstores. I'm studying English at USC--although I'm taking a break now--and I read a wide variety of things. In fact, I just recently finished "Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt and before that, I read the classic "Catcher in the Rye" for the first time.

Party Hardly: I'm really not much of a partyer. Well, for one, I'm only 20 years old, so there's a lot of places I can't even get into yet. But I actually had a really good weekend a couple of months ago when I went to the Derby, the old restaurant. It's a swing club now, so we went swing dancing. It's really fun. Someone told me the other day that there's a karaoke opening down the street from my home on the Westside, so I'll have to check that out. But I really don't go out all that much to clubs; I'd rather just hang out with my friends. If you want to know the truth, on Saturday nights I usually hang out and watch television at home.

Flower Child: On Sundays, well, you've got to sleep in until noon or 1 o'clock. No, really, I wake up early and go to the Hollywood Farmers Market and get some fresh flowers. And cheese. Then maybe take a hike. Or I've gone bike riding in Santa Monica, right on the beach. I do that once in a while, but I'm really not that athletic. Then I'll make dinner at home and go to bed early to get ready for the week ahead. (--- Kevin Baxter, LA Times)

Roswell

YM, October '99

(Wednesdays, 9 p.m./ET on The WB)

THE HOOK: Aliens have landed...and they're cute! As if high school weren't tough enough, these three students struggle with more than just algebra-- they're trying to keep their otherwordly identities a secret from other kids.

COOL CHICKS: Liz (Shiri Appleby), whose budding romance with an alien cutie threatens to expose the galactic group; her wacky friend Maria; and overprotective alien sib Isabel.

HOTTIE ALERT: No bug eyes and green heads here! Mysterious Max (Jason Behr) and brooding Michael will make you shriek, "Take me to your leader."

SCENE THAT'LL HAVE YOU BUZZING: Max heals Liz's gunshot wound with a mere press of his palm, leaving behind silver fingerprints. Talk about a guy with a magic touch.

D'S WE DIG: Aliens listen to a CD by spinning it on their finger next to their ear; a "blood-of-alien smoothie" on the menu at the cafe where Liz waitresses.

WHY YOU'LL BE ADDICTED: If you've rooted for Mulder and Scully's relationship to be more than supernatural, you'll be dying to see if these star-crossed lovers can have an out-of-this-world romance.
