Coping with Internet Problems

This page will help deal with some of the common problems people have when they are surfing. These are everyday problems that are easily fixed, once you know the tricks

Chat problems are the biggest complaint. Sometimes it is the server, but often it is your computer that is causing the problems. Here is what you can do to correct the problems. If you can't get in at all:

  • try the reload or the refresh button on the tool bar of the browser. In Netscape it is reload in Internet Explorer it is refresh (note the terms Netscape uses are the generic browser terms. Microsoft has renamed each of these functions, which only causes confusion.)
  • If reload doesn't work. Time to empty the cache (netscape) or temporary internet files (IE). To do this in IE 4-6:
    1. select tools from menu
    2. look for Internet Options
    3. click on the button in the middle of the first tab that says Delete Files. It is in a box called Temporary Internet Files
    4. click on ok to exit
  • To clear the cache in Netscape 4-7
    1. Click on Edit on the menu
    2. Click on Preferences
    3. You will see a list of words in a box to the left of the screen. This is called a tree One of the branches of the tree will be called Advanced
    4. Click on the box with the plus sign [+] immediately to the left of Advanced. The tree will expand.
    5. Now you will see the word Cache. Click anywhere on that row.
    6. To the right you will see boxes appear. One of them will say Clear Disk Cache. Click on it
    7. Click on ok to exit
  • Now after you have done this, try to get into yahoo chat. I would suggest that you close the browser window, and then open it to get back it.

AOL Users:

One easy answer to your problems is to just get rid of AOL and get a regular ISP like Earthlink, Worldnet,Concentrix, or even support your local ISP, etc.

If you must use AOL, then don't use their browser whenever you try to do something with Java. Make sure you have a working copy of Netscape 4.X or Internet Explorer 4 or 5 on your computer (or any other Java-enabled browser, for that matter.) AOL's browser, (especially true with AOL 3, can not cope with the newer technologies of the net.
