Anya Emerson's Bio

Anya Emerson (Emma Caulfield), around 1120, was previously the vengeance demon Anyanka, who granted the wishes of angered girlfriends agains their boyfriend. She took the form of a 12 year and called herself Anya. She pretended to be a new student at Sunnydale High, in an attempt to grant a vengence wish for Cordelia against Xander when she cheated on Cordelia. Cordelia ended up wishing that Buffy never came to Sunnydale. This created an alternate reality where vampires ruled the world. However, the Giles of that reality summonded Anyanka and destroyed her power source, changing the world back and leaving Anyanka trapped as Anya - a mortal girl ("The Wish"). She later resurfaced when she tricked Willow into helping her get her powersource back from the alternate reality, but instead they summoned Vamp Willow. Anya then showed her true colors (when Giles destroyed Anyanka's power source, time reverted to before Cordelia made the wish, and thus no one knew she was evil) and made a deal with Vamp Willow. However, the scoobies managed to send Vamp Willow back and Anya was still human ("Doppelgangland"). She then returned, because she was struggling with her new human form and the emotions that came with it, and she desperately wanted to go to the Prom. She asked Xander, and since he had no one else, he went with her. However, she only talked about all the vengence she had done ("The Prom"). She appeared again before the Ascension, begging Xander to flee with her, after providing helpful information. It appeared that Xander and Anya were making a connection ("Graduation Day Part 2"). She appeared again after Xander's affections, and they had sex ("Harsh Light Day"). After that, she and Xander were an item, and she slowly intergrated into the group, much to Willow's dismay. She has been struggling with being human, and often is too blunt and doesn't understand appropriateness, as well as other customs, such as death. However, she has proved valuable as an information provider and a worker at the Magic Shop under Giles' employment.
