Another Love

11:14 Sunday night

Lucy walked briskly down the corridor of Chicago county general hospital. Her shift was over, but she was just taking some urine to the lab to be tested. It was her urine. She finally reached the lab. She stopped outside the door wondering if she really wanted to do this. She decided. She turned around and walked away. *I don’t need to know…It is for the best…Yeah, right it will just make you so unhappy…You need to know, there is no hiding from it…* Two voices argued in her head.

“Lucy, Lucy..” her thoughts were interrupted. She recognised the voice instantly. *Damn, Carter* she thought. She hesitated then turned round.

“Hey” She said in a casual tone.

“Can you come in early tomorrow?” He spat straight out. She thought about this request for a moment. The hospital had already been working her too hard, but it was her career. It was her duty to do it.

“Al right.” She replied half-heartedly.

“Thanks!” he said. “It’s just my parents are coming back from Europe tomorrow and they want me to meet them at the airport.” He sounded so unenthusiastic she found it depressing.

“O.K” she said dully and turned round to walk off.

“Wait!” Carter said. She stopped and turned round. She smiled at him, he continued. “Do you want me to take that sample to the lab for you?” She was totally unaware that she was holding the little tube. She looked down… *damn* she cursed herself *what am I going to say!* She panicked, but on the surface she remained calm.

“No it’s ok, I can do it.” She replied.

“O.K bye. See you tomorrow afternoon, Lucy.” Lucy was relived that he had gone. She turned and made her way into the lounge. She got her bag out of her locker and put the tiny tube into her front pocket. She then put her bag on her back and started to walk out of the hospital.

“Lucy!” She heard a voice from behind her. “Lucy, wait up!” She turned around to see her boyfriend, Dr Dave Malucci. They had got together last year, in September. There had been an incident at the hospital when she was involved in a stabbing and had nearly died. Afterwards Dave had told her how much she meant to him. They had gone on a couple of dates and they were now living together. She had not realised how much she liked him until their first date. She found him lovely and charming, just like Carter… *God, damn you Lucy. Why do you keep on bringing things like that up?* She didn’t know. Her and Carter had stolen a kiss in exam 6 once, but that‘s all it was, a kiss, meaningless. Anyway, Dave and her were happy together.

They started to walk together down the corridor. “I thought you were not off until later.”

“I wasn’t.”

“Well are you now?”

“Yep.”

“How come?” she asked with genuine interest.

“Carter is filling in for me. He told me about taking you away from me tomorrow and offered to fill in for me tonight, cool eh?”

“Oh, Dave. You can’t let him do that.” She said in her whinny voice.

“Why not?” he asked.

“Because…well you just can’t, it’s not fair!”

“Oh,” he sighed. “I suppose you’re right.” He said a little defeated. “But, I have a family to go home to…”

“ I am not your family, I am just someone who is very much in love with you.” She said in a soppy voice, knowing full well that he would kiss her for that. She had also won the argument. She knew this as he bent down to kiss her on the lips. She kissed him back.

“O.K, now go, you can’t leave Carter waiting there!”

“See you later!” He said as he walked off.

“Yeah, bye” She shouted back as he continued to get further away. She stood there for a moment. Thinking. She opened the front pocket of her bag and took the sample to the lab.

3:17 Monday morning

Carter turned in his sleep. He had been trying to get to sleep for the last hour, with no luck. At last he gave up and he got up and out of bed. He didn’t know why he had been feeling horrible recently, but he knew it had something to do with Lucy.

He walked in to the kitchen, this is what he liked about not sharing with Kerry Weaver. The freedom. He had decide to move out because of an argument the two of them had. He thought about it for a moment, remembering back to that Thursday a months or so ago when he had come home totally drunk, he was due to be on in half an hour, and she was not happy about it. She had shouted at him (she was in a bad mood that day, something had happened at the hospital, which had really pissed her off.) So, he had made the decision there and then, he turned around and walked out. He spent the rest of the night at Lucy’s and Dave’s place, much to Dave’s disapproval.

He snapped back to the present.

He made himself some coffee and went into the living room to sit down. He put the coffee on the table and got the cordless phone and sat down. He had to do something to make himself feel better otherwise he would never be able to sleep.

3:31 Monday morning

“Oh, god, what is that noise?” Lucy mumbled in her sleep. She realised it was the phone. She rolled over to the other side of the bed, where Dave should have been. She picked up the phone. “Hello.” She said trying to sound like she had not just been woken up. When there was no answer she tried again. “Hello. Dave is that you?” she asked, still not fully awake. This time the person on the other end replied.

“No… No…It’s not Dave.”

“Oh, Carter, it’s you.” She was relieved to find out that it was Carter and not some phsyco killer. Although she would never admit her fear to anyone, Lucy had been having problems trying to get over her attack.

“Yeah, I just wanted to say that I am sorry about tomorrow. OK?”

“Yeah, that’s fine, whatever. But Carter, do you really have to phone me at…” she turned on the clock light beside her. “3:37 in the morning to tell me that?” she quizzed.

“Sorry.” he replied. He sounded hurt by the harshness in his voice.

“Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to be that harsh.” She said in her usual gentle, kind voice.

She looked at the clock again. *Funny, Dave is meant to be home by now!* “ Hey, Carter,” she said into the phone. “Did you see Dave earlier?”

“Yeah.” he replied

“Well, did he say he was going to be late home or anything?” There was a lot of concern in her voice.

“No, he didn’t, sorry.”

“Oh, O.K” Now she sounded very disappointed. “It’s just he should be home by now.” She was never usually this worried about anyone, but she had been since the attack.

“Bye.” She said and hung up. She decided what she was going to do…Nothing. She had to get over this sometime and this was a good way to do it. By not being worried. She sat there in the silence for a few minutes, but then instinct got the better of her. She dressed and walked to the hospital.

3:42 Monday morning

Dave just stood there dumbfounded at what he held in his hand. It was the results of a pregnancy test. Not any pregnancy test, but Lucy’s one. It didn’t say her name on it, but it did say Barbara Carter. Not very imaginative really. Not for Lucy. Her mother’s name and he old teachers name. *maybe it is not Lucy’s, maybe you have jumped to the wrong conclusions* he tried to reason with himself. With this new thought in his head, he walked out of the lab. Somewhere deep inside him he knew that it was Lucy’s and he was going to be a father.

3:46 Monday morning

It only took Lucy five minutes to walk from her and Dave’s small apartment to the hospital. When she arrived Randi looked up at her.

“Hey, Lucy.” Randi said casually.

“Hi, have you seen Dave about?”

“Yeah, last time I saw him he was walking into the lab.”

“O.K thanks bye” Lucy started to walk slowly down the corridor. Then it occurred to her what was in the lab. Her test. She started to speed up. *He might not figure it out…he’s not stupid of course he will.* She reached the lab and almost ran straight into Dave. He had a worried look on his face. That was when she knew that he knew about the test. She calmly walked into the lab. She picked up the paper bag, which lay face down on one of the counters. She slowly took out the sheet of results. She looked down it carefully. She was pregnant.

Then she turned, a smile forming on her face. She ran up to Dave a kissed on the lips so hard he almost fell over. “We’re gonna have a baby!” She exclaimed. He became excited too and started jumping up and down. This, of course attracted the attention of the entire staff of the ER And let’s just say there was a lot of gossiping done that night.

7:19 Monday evening

Lucy laid back on the couch in the lounge. Today had been someday. At 4 this morning she had found out she was pregnant. Then, of course, there had been the celebrations. They had gone on for about an hour. Then she managed to go home and get a hour and a half sleep before getting ready to do Carter’s shift.

She was now at the end of the 12 hour shift. There had had three traumas, two of which died and she had got thrown up on, by a 5-year-old. It was not a good day – apart from the pregnancy bit. Or was it, was it really good news?

This was one of the questions, which had been bugging her all day. She got up and started to walk home. In 8 hours she had another 6 hour shift. How was she ever going to cope with a baby?

7:27 Monday evening

When she arrived home the phone was ringing. She reached to pick it up and only just got to it before the answering machine did. Unfortunately she had tripped over the wire in the process, bringing her down to the floor.

“Hello?” she finally brought her self to say after a lot of swear words and an ‘ow’.

“Hey.” Said the voice from the other end. It was Carter. “You O.K?” he asked.

“Yeah, fine” she got up and made her way to the couch.

“I heard the good news, congratulations.” He said in as cheery voice as he could.

“What for?” she asked genuinely.

“The pregnancy…”

“Oh, yeah…thanks. I am not sure if that is god news or not.” She stated bluntly.

“What do you mean?” he was surprised at her answer.

“Can I meet you somewhere?” she asked.

“Yeah, sure. Doc Macgoo’s, half an hour?”

She agreed. Doc MacGoo’s was near both of their apartments, so it was no trouble for either of them.

8:04 Monday night

When Carter arrived he looked around. There was no sign of Lucy. He sat down in one of the booths and decided to wait. He waited. And waited. He waited until she was an hour late. He got up from the table and went to the pay phone on the wall. He quickly dialled in Lucy’s number. When there was no answer he went over to the hospital. He asked Randi if she had seen Lucy. But she said no, so he decided to go back to Lucy’s place to see if she was there. He knocked on the door. There was no answer. He knocked a little louder. He listened carefully for any sounds from inside. He heard nothing. He was starting to get worried. He took the spare key from underneath the mat and unlocked the door. He looked around and there he saw Lucy laying on the floor in a deep sleep. She looked so nice he wanted to kiss her, but he knew he couldn’t. He had reminded himself so many times. He walked over to her and picked her up. He carried her into her bedroom and laid her down on the bed.

She woke up a little bit. She put her arm around his neck and whispered “I love you” He looked at her a little shocked. *She must still be sleepy.* He thought to himself. Then she pulled him closer and kissed him lightly on the lips. He kissed her back. Lucy was fully awake by now and aware of what she was doing. The kissed each other hard on the lips, neither of them wanting to stop. That was when Dave walked in…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
9:23 Monday evening
Lucy was the first to see Dave standing in the doorway of her bedroom. She quickly stopped what she was doing and pushed Carter away. “What was that for?” he asked shocked. Then he saw Dave.
He hesitated not knowing what to say. Then he blurted out “It’s not what you think!” he didn’t know why he said that, because it was quite obviously what Dave thought it was. It was his pregnant girlfriend kissing her old teacher.
“How can this not be what I think this is!” Dave shouted. Lucy just sat there, wordless.
“I know.” Cater said. He did not know what else to say, there was no excuse for this. He had resisted temptation for so long. why was it now, when Lucy had just found out that she was pregnant with Dave’s baby, that he had to break. Carter got up and went to leave. Dave and Lucy just sat there on the bed, both wordless.
“Don’t think you get away with it that easily!” Dave said viciously. Dave launched himself forward and punched Carter on the nose. Lucy suddenly woke from her trance.
“Dave no! Stop it!” she ordered him. She held him back. She was surprisingly strong. “Stop it!” she shouted again. “Let’s talk about this.” Her voice returning to it’s usual volume.
Dave turned on Lucy. “Shut up!” he was obviously very angry. It was then that he struck Lucy.
“Lucy!” Carter shouted. He could not believe what Dave had just done.
“Lucy, Lucy. I am so, so, so sorry. I didn’t mean to do that. I love you baby.” Dave knelt down beside her, apologising as he kissed her on the forehead.
She was one that was angry now. She pushed Dave away and stormed out of the room. Dave chased her. Carter was now alone in the room. Five minutes ago his life had been how he had wanted. Now it was his idea of hell. He walked in to the small living room and picked up his coat off the sofa. He folded it over his arm and walked out of the door. He shut it firmly behind him, leaving the spare key under the mat. He then walked out of the block of flats.
Dave had chased Lucy up to the roof of her apartment building. When he got up there he found her sitting by the edge of the roof. He had got her down from there and they were now talking to each other. He apologised. She apologised and then they went back downstairs. It was as simple as that. No more arguments. They had both agreed that they had done stupid things, and they had both said sorry, They had promised never to mention today ever again, apart from the discovery of her pregnancy bit. They were again a happy family.
11:36 Monday evening
Carter had been sitting on the same park bench for the last two hours. He wondered what was going on with Dave and Lucy. Had they made up? Had they split up? Or worse, had he hit her again? *But Dave wouldn’t do that, not after the look on his face the first time he did it. He decided to go back to his home there was only another 4 hours until he was on and he had not slept since just before he had gone to meet his parents at the airport earlier that day. That was 16 hours ago. He really did need sleep. But he did not think he would get any. Still, he went back to his apartment.
4:05 Tuesday morning
4 hours later at the hospital, Lucy walked though the doors of the hospital. She was not feeling her best, after the events of earlier, who would? She just hoped that Carter would not be there, although she knew he would be. She saw him out of the corner of her eye, he was walking up to her. *Damn* she thought. But she knew she would have to face it sooner or later. He walked up behind her and stood beside her. They made it look as if they were looking at the board, but they weren’t. They were looking at each other, each wondering who was going to talk about the events of earlier first. Carter did. “Meet me on the roof in five.” He whispered in her ear. She simply nodded and continued surveying the board as he walked away.
4:10
Five minutes later Carter was waiting on the freezing cold roof. She had not turned up yet… He waited another five minutes. Then he decided to go down stairs. He got in the elevator and pressed the button for the floor of the ER. When he got down there he found that something was wrong. He walked up to the front desk. “Hey, what’s going on here?” he asked trying not to sound worried.
“Lucy collapsed.” Said Randi calmly, although he could detect a lot of worry in her voice.
“Where is she?” he asked fanatically.
“They just took her upstairs to one of the wards.”
“Thanks, Randi!”
He ran to the elevator and jumped in, he pressed the button and started to pace around the tiny elevator. The elevator arrived at the correct floor after what seamed like an eternity. He ran out and found his way directly to her room. He ran in to see Dave knelt at her side. He turned around and walked away. Words could not describe how he felt then. He felt as if his heart had just been ripped out, and someone had stabbed it a thousand times. What was he going to d about this? He didn’t know.
11:42 Tuesday morning
Later on Carter was checking the board for any patients, it was so quite no one had been in for so long. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Dave leave the hospital. Now was his chance to talk to Lucy. He left what he was doing, which was nothing, and walked up to Lucy’s room.
When he got in there she was fast asleep. He looked at her chart. A few test were still being done on her, but it was probably exsustion that had made her collapse. He watched her sleeping for a while and turned to leave. Then she woke up. “Hey.” She said.
It was a little surprised but glad that she had woken up. “Hi.” he said back. They looked each other in the eyes, both knowing what the other was thinking about. “We need to talk.” She said breaking the silence.
“ I know.” He replied. “When are they letting you out of here?” he asked.
“ They are keeping me in until tomorrow, to make sure I do get some rest. But I ‘m out of here tomorrow morning.”
“Oh good.” He said simply.
“This won’t go away.” She said, knowing what he was thinking.
“I know, I don’t want it too…” *what am I doing, I can’t lead her on like this, she’s with Dave now.* “I just.. I just hoped that this would not be the end. I think I am in love with you, Lucy Knight.” *Why did I say that, I am so stupid.*
She sat up and held his hand. “Please, please. Don’t say that.” she begged “It’s not what I need to hear right now.” She told him. But in her mind that was exactly what she wanted to hear. She did not want this to be the end either. He turned and left her there alone in the room.
12:03 Tuesday afternoon
He went back downstairs and began to work again. Working harder than he ever had before. With a million thoughts running through his head at once. Near to the end of his shift he went into the lounge and sat down on the sofa. He didn’t know how long he had been sitting there when Dave came in.
He looked up and gave Dave a smile. Dave ignored him. *Fine then* thought Carter. He got off the sofa and walked out of the door to the lounge. He looked at a nearby clock. It read 1:33. He had been off half an hour ago. He couldn’t believe that he had wasted a whole hour sitting in the lounge. He signed out of the computer and walked to the elevator and got in. He wanted to see Lucy one more time, before he said goodbye to county, possible forever…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When he entered her room she was asleep. He had not planned for this, although, he did admit, it made things easier on him. He picked up a nearby napkin and took a pen from his pocket. He started to write.

Dear Lucy,

I know that I am about to tell you may seem sudden, but I want you to know that I have been thinking about it for a while now. I have decided to leave Chicago. As I said I have been thinking about this for a long time and after what happened last night, I can not stay here. Sorry.

Loving you always John

He finished writing and laid down the napkin on her lap. He left the room, never once turning back. He walked briskly down the corridor toward the elevator. He stopped. Coming towards him was Dr. Dave. * Why did I not think of this, he will find the note.* He quickly turned round and walked back to Lucy’s room. He picked up the note and stuffed it in his pockets, only seconds before the door swung open and Dave walked in.

“Hello.” Said Dave coldly, the hatred clear in his voice.

“Hi.” Carter replied in a cheery voice.

“You were just going?” Dave asked.

It was more of a statement than a question, but Carter did not like being treated like this and answered “No.”

“Hi.” Lucy said as she woke up.

“Hi.” Both the men replied at once.

“I just came up here to give you this.” Carter said as he handed her the note. She took it with a questioning look on her face. He turned and left the room for the second time, but this time he did turn around. He turned again to walk away. This time with tears forming in his eyes.

00:13 Wednesday Morning

Carter was still packing his stuff into his bags. He had four bags on the bed and piles of clothes on the floor. He finished packing his last bag and walked around his apartment. There was nothing left. This was it. In the morning he would leave never to return. *Is this what I really want?* He asked himself. But then he decided it was for the best. He could not cope with seeing Lucy being happy with Dave for so long. He had managed up until now, but now she was pregnant, it was a different story.

He took the bags off the bed and placed them on the floor. He then lay back on the bed. He was going to miss this place. Although he had only been living there for a month, it felt like home.

A knock at the door interrupted his thoughts. He went to the door and opened it. It was Lucy. He had expected this. He opened the door gesturing for her to come in. Neither of them spoke a word. They fell into each others arms and kissed more passionately than they had two nights before. Each wanting the other more and more as the minutes passed. Carter broke the embrace. “Stop! Stop!” he gasped. “I can’t do this!”

“Why not?” she asked, clearly upset.

“I’m leaving tomorrow, you have a boyfriend, your pregnant…There are lots of reasons!”

I’ve got one reason why we should.”

“Go on then”

“I love you!”

It was the words he had been longing to hear come out of her mouth for so long, but now they were here out in the open he had no idea what to do.

He kissed her again. Then he said, “Leave.”

She looked him in the eyes, obviously wanting him to give reason to this. But she knew the reason. She walked out of the apartment, for the last time.

Carter watched her go. He watched as another woman he loved walked out of his apartment and his life. He went back into his bedroom and collapsed on the bed. It was the first time he had cried in a very long time.

Another love has gone

So what?

Carry on

Don’t stay dwelling on the past

On a love you knew could never last

Be strong

Won’t take long

Trust me

You can deal with break-ups

But this time you won’t make-up

So leave another love behind

~~~~~~~~~~~
She looked him in the eyes, obviously wanting him to give reason to this. But she knew the reason. She walked out of the apartment, for the last time.
Carter watched her go. He watched as another woman he loved walked out of his apartment and his life. He went back into his bedroom and collapsed on the bed. It was the first time he had cried in a very long time
Three months later..
Carter got up out of his new bed in his new apartment, in his new town.London, England. He liked it there. He had a new job at Hammersmith hospital and was renting an apartment nearby. It wasn't exactly the best part of London, but he did like it. It was lovely and the people were friendly. There was one thing missing. Lucy. It had been three months, yet still he hadn't got over her.
Carter walked to over to his front door and picked up the post that was scattered all over the front mat. He quickly flicked through them. "Junk, junk, bill, junk.ummmm.." He said as one of the envelopes caught his eye. He looked at it. It was very neat and the postmark was from America. He opened it. *Great!* he said to himself sarcastically. It was from Lucy, but it wasn't just a letter, it was a wedding invitation.
He thought about the wedding invitation all day while he was working at the hospital. He thought about it so much that he didn't even notice when Rachel (the receptionist) was running down the hall calling after him. "Dr. Carter!" she was raised her voice.
"Umm?" he said casually as he turned around.
"There's a girl on the phone for you. It's from America."
"Oh, ok." He said still in a daze as he walked back towards the reception area. *It's probably Lucy asking about the wedding. As if I'd go to her wedding to that, that.* His thoughts trailed off as he reached his destination.
"I'll get it in the lounge." He said and walked into the lounge.
Once he reached the lounge he raised the phone to his ear. "Hello?" he said into it, trying to remain calm.
"John, John? Is that you.Oh my god.I don't know where to start." it was his sister. "It's mum and dad.they've, well they've been in an accident. John they're in hospital." Carter's mind raced, *OH, MY GOD* He thought.
"But they're still alive, right?" He panicked.
"Yes, I don't know what's wrong with them though. Maybe the doctor can explain it to you better."
There was a small shuffling sound as his sister handed over to the phone to the doctor.
"Hello Carter." It was Lucy.
"Lucy!" He said, sheer excitement clear in his voice. It felt so good to talk to her again.
She explained what had happened to his parents.
"So, they're going to be ok?"
"Yep. Should be fine in a few days. So, are you coming back for the wedding?"
"I'm coming back for good." He didn't know why he had just said that. How could he go back after what happened? But still, here he was promising the love of his life something that could never happen. Or could it.?
After they had said their goodbyes Carter had just walked out of the hospital, without even explaining to any one where he was going, not even his superiors.
He had gone straight home and packed the little belongings he had into a small suitcase and headed for the City airport. Once he was at the airport he asked when the next plane to Chicago was. They said that it wasn't until ten that night and as it was only 3 in the afternoon he had a long time to wait.
He didn't mind waiting though. He had been waiting all his life. Waiting for someone like Lucy to come along and when she finally did he had waited for her to become a fully trained doctor, so a relationship could develop between them. But, unfortunately it had been too late. She had already found someone else. She had already found someone else to have a baby with, get married to. She was happy, that was all that really mattered to him. That she was happy, he didn't really care about himself that much. Only her. But that's what you do when you're in love, isn't it? Care about the other person more than yourself, you would do anything to make them happy, you would die for them.
Carter looked down at his watch. It read 4:43. *Great, just another 5 hours* He had already bought his ticket and was waiting inside the passengers only bit.
He got up and went over to WHSmith (a convenience shop.) Once inside he headed towards the Magazine section. What did he want? He looked at the general magazine part but nothing appealed to him. Then he went along to sport part. Something caught his eye. A rugby magazine. If he was going to miss anything about England, it would be the rugby. He didn't know why he liked it. It was strange; he didn't usually like violent sports. It might have been because it reminded him of home. It was kind of like American Football, but not really because they didn't use all the padding, only these little shields inside their mouths to stop them getting their teeth knocked out.
Thinking about this was getting his mind off what was really bothering him. Lucy.
How would he ever get over her? He thought he had up until a few hours ago, but then he had realised that he had only buried his feelings for her. Now he was on his way to Chicago to get her back.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Carter arrived at Chicago city airport at about three in the morning (chicago time.)

He smiled as he picked up his bags. He was back here again, back in the city which (now he had experienced alternatives) was the right city for him in every way.

He smiled as he walked out of the baggage area. He smiled as he walked past the few shops that were scattered around. He smiled as he walked past all the people waiting for the flights. But when he got to the exits his smile faded. He realised something. He had no where to go. He had no apartment to go to and he couldn't call on anyone from the hospital, not at this time of night. * I could go to my parents. * He thought, then dismissed the thought quickly. He thought about it for a good minute then he decided where he would go.

"Hey, Carter? Is that really you?" cried Lucy as she came towards the doors of the hospital to greet him with open arms. She looked as good as ever, there was only one thing missing, for a woman five months pregnant she was extremely thin. Either she was having an exceptionally small baby, or something had happened.

He smiled his cute half smile. "Yes, it is really me, Lucy." He said smiling broadly at the warm welcome.

"Oh, my god! It's so good to see you again!" She screamed, wrapping her arms around him. He stumbled, a little taken aback, then, realising how much he had really missed her cuddled her back. "Hey, Dave!" Lucy shouted at the passing doctor. "Look, who turned up on the doorstep!"

Dave took one disgusted look at the sight of his-wife to-be and the person she had once cheated on him with arm in arm and realizing that he couldn't really be rude to him said "Hi Carter". Then he walked away.

Lucy, suddenly realising what she was doing, abruptly let go of Carter and walked one or two paces back.

"So, would you like coffee or something." She said a little embarrassed at her sudden out burst. "I suppose it would be tea with you now, wouldn't it?" she asked, attempting a very bad English accent, which made them both burst out in fits of laughter. They were still laughing when they reached the lounge.

Carter pushed the doors open and then he was frozen, there was nothing he could really say about the scene in front of him, you could tell that from the look on his face.

"Sorry, guys." Said Lucy, pulling the door shut in front of them and leading Carter off in the opposite direction. "Cafeteria good enough for you?

"How long have I been away?" he said, managing to regain control of his speech.

Lucy, simply laughed. "You mean Luka and Abby? Yeah, well I wouldn't of expected it either, but some things are unexpected." She paused with a sorrowful look down.

"Lucy?" Carter asked and pulled Lucy into the smallest empty room, which just happened to be exam six.

"Yes." She replied in a small voice.

"Lucy, what happened with the baby?"

She started to cry softly. Through her tears she managed to mumble the words "miscarriage"

He put his strong arms tightly around her and together they rocked back and forwards in the darkened room, both crying for different reasons. Lucy for the baby, Carter for Lucy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They stayed in exam six for a while. After they had both managed to stop crying they talked.
"So, why are you still marring Dave, then?" Carter asked, knowing full-well that the question was extremely rude.
But Lucy replied sorrowful and honestly. "There was no one else to marry." She looked up into his eyes.
He was the one to make the first move. He bent down slightly and more his lips towards hers. Eventually there lips touched for the first time in too long. He moved his arm to put it around her, and she moved his. And the door opened. None of the people involved could really remember what happened then, and most of it went in slow motion to Carter.
Carter and Lucy turned. It was Dave. Dave moved towards Carter. Carter stepped away. Then all Carter could remember was a strike, blackness and Lucy screams. And then even the screams faded and all that was left was blackness.
But blackness can show so many things. Carter could only remember snippets of the dreams he had while he slept so deeply.
A church. Lucy's wedding? He went inside. Not Lucy's wedding. His funeral. Lucy speaking at the front. He couldn't work out what she was saying apart from "I love him still"
Faded
His old back garden. Now his. Lucy in a chair. Lucy looking fat - oh, sorry, she is pregnant.
Faded
The desert. Hard to tell which one - they all look the same. Then a figured on the horizon. A female figure - Lucy. She came closer. Then he realised it wasn't a dream. Lucy was really in front of him.
"I love you" he mumbled from his hospital bed.
"I love you too!" she said and leant down to kiss him once more. The first of many, many kisses to come.
The End
