History: The Greenpoint Paranormal Society are a team of amateur teenage paranormal researchers and urban explorers with a common interest in psychic phenomenon, particularly in ghosts and haunted houses. Founded by students Peter McFarland, Steven Gubitosi and Anthony Cooper, the group is largely made up of students from Greenpoint Preparatory School on Staten Island, New York. Based out of an upstairs garage apartment on McFarland's family property, the members visit and analyze reports of ghosts within the New York City area.

Peter McFarland is the grandson of Dr. Harold Clove, a prominent psychologist from the 60s and 70s who divulged part of his life into the pursuit of reputed paranormal activity. After his death, much of his research, occult collection and recordings of spirit activity was boxed up and stored in the apartment above the garage of his daughter in Greenpoint, New York. An aficionado of horror movies, Peter became fascinated by his work and collection and encouraged his friends, Steven Gubitosi and Anthony Cooper to research claims of ghosts in the basement of their school. Armed with cameras and equipment purchased through the Collinsport Ghost Society website, they caught just enough evidence to prove their school which had once been an Eighteenth Century convent was haunted, but their principal censored the article from the school newspaper to keep from scaring the students.

Peter was soon joined in investigations by his girlfriend, Gwen Switzer, Anthony's step-sister, who had had a paranormal encounter in her grandmother's home in Rachel, Kansas. Several other classmates also wanted to be part of the group because of paranormal experiences of their own. Steven's girlfriend, Mary Jane Hood, in her role as a struggling actress, had also experienced a presence while shooting a movie in Franken Castle in Ohio. New student Johnny Thomas from Denver, Colorado also believed in ghosts after exploring the basement rooms of the Briarcliff Hotel where his father once worked as a chef. A computer whiz, Johnny helped to create the gang's website and create programs for cleaning and interpreting their video and sound evidence.

The GPS was later expanded by a number of other students from Greenpoint Prep who were either connected to the group members or had connections to locations they were interested in visiting. Basketball prodigy Nicholas Beard joined the GPS out of boredom after an accident wrecked his knee and he was forced to convalesce afterward. Filling his time with night time visits to area local houses, he stayed with the group even after his ankle healed. Jennifer Moore was a close friend of Mary Jane who tagged along on one of their investigations to try and embarrass them and was instead terrified when she got inexplicably locked in a room at Wadsworth Monastery. Gaining their respect, she started using her clout with her father's friends in the local Manhattan Historical Society. Chuck Albright was a new student at Greenpoint Prep from Chicago, Illinois with an already active interest in the paranormal who Steven invited to work with them, and Matthew Condon was an underclassman who had an infatuation on Gwen. He joined the group to try and win her affections from Peter, and even after that failed, he continued to hang around to help move and set up their equipment on cases.

Despite all the members, not everyone in the group goes on investigations. Peter and Anthony send e-mails to the members to determine who is able to join them and to schedule investigations. Due to personal, school and social commitments, there are usually only about three to five members at a time on investigations. They travel around Manhattan in a used 1983 Volkswagen van which Peter and Steven pooled their resources to buy and restore. The group members donate their own money and resources to cover their expenses. Although limited to the New York City area, Peter, Steven and Anthony plan to keep the team active until they can afford to reach other locations within and outside the continental United States.
