Spike felt like he had been digging for years. It had actually only been a couple days, but the blond vampire was not known for his patience. After Drusilla had left him for the second and final time, Spike had been ready to watch the sun rise. Seeing his dark princess walk away with that fungus demon had been the worst experience in his entire life, er.. unlife. He had sat on a park bench in Brazil, waiting for the dawn, when out of nowhere came this strange, badly dressed demon. He didn’t remember the bloke’s name, but he did remember the gleam in his eyes as he handed over the map that held the actual location of the gem of Amora.
He remembered when Angelus had told him the legend of the gem. Spike had thought it all nonsense at the time, but if what that demon had said was correct ,Spike would soon be the most powerful vampire in the world. The blond vampire felt a pang in his dead heart as he remembered his sire telling him the story. He used to love to just listen to Angelus talk, even if it was nonsense.
Enough of that! Spike was a little concerned about the directions his thoughts were taking. He’d just think of something else. Like, what he would do once he found the gem. First, he’d go outside and walk around in the sunlight. Then he’d kill the Slayer.
After that, he’d return to Brazil, and kill the fungus demon that Dru had left him for. Slowly, kill him. His ducks wouldn’t turn him away then, no, she craved power. And he’d give her anything she wanted. Maybe he’d even give her the gem and let her kill the slayer herself. The image of the young blonde girl filled his head. Such, power, and stamina. No, he’d kill her himself. He’d let her die with the dignity she deserved. He’d go to her funeral and relish in the grief that would be on the faces of her loved ones.
All thoughts quickly fled his mind as a wicked grin spread across his handsome face. He had found it! The world would soon be his!

Buffy Summers sat at her kitchen table eating a bagel. It was only 6am, but she was to excited to sleep late. This was the day she’d been waiting for all summer long! With exactly four weeks until school started, today was the day she’d do her back to school shopping! The slayer happily munched on her bagel, as she flipped through the sales papers.
“Ohh!” a voice groaned from the hallway, causing Buffy to look up.
“Mom! What’s wrong?” Joyce Summers looked terrible. Her face was pale, and her eyes swollen with big dark circles underneath.
“I think I have the flu.” she told her daughter in a stuffed up voice.
“I’m sorry honey, but I really don’t feel up to going shopping with you today. Think you can manage on your own? I’ll even give you my credit card.” Joyce knew how excited her daughter was about going shopping, and felt bad about ruining her fun.
“Maybe Willow could go with you.” she suggested.
“Willow is out of town until tonight, but don’t worry mom. I’m sure your credit card and I will get along great!” Buffy gave her mother a smile. “Go back to bed!” she ordered. Joyce gave her mock salute and headed back up the stairs. Oh well, shopping alone was better than not shopping at all!
**********
Spike whistled and skipped along the side walk turning onto Rovello Drive. He hadn’t seen the sun in over a century! Oh, it felt so good on his cold skin. He merrily pranced down the street smiling at the people who sent him odd looks, as he played with his shadow. Finally he reached Buffy’s house. The blond vampire marched straight to her door, straightened his clothes, cleared his throat, and rang the bell.
After a few minutes a very sick Joyce answered the door.
“Cor, pet you look terrible! What’s wrong?” the vampire asked of the woman he’d befriended the last time he was in Sunnyhell.
“Oh, Spike what a pleasant surprise! I’m afraid I have the flu.” she told him. Spike grew concerned realizing that she must be really out of it if she hadn’t even noticed he was in the sun and not going, poof.
“Spike, I’d love to chat with you, but I really need to go back to bed.”
“Of course, luv, but first where is that daughter of yours? Just because she’s the slayer doesn’t mean she can neglect taking care of her sick mum.”
“Oh, Spike! I told her to go shopping. She’s been looking forward to it all summer, I couldn’t let her stay with me all day!” she explained.
“Oh, well I guess I’ll try to find her. Feel better Joyce!” Spike spun around, and whistling the theme to Star Wars, headed down the street.
Joyce Summers smiled and shook her head as she closed the door. What a strange vampire! Wait a second, vampires couldn’t walk around in the sunlight, could they?

Buffy glanced at her watch for the tenth time in five minutes, and let out a frustrated sigh. Ten more minutes until the mall would open. A small crowd of excited shoppers awaiting the opening, had gathered with her at the mall entrance.
Suddenly, Buffy felt something hit her in the back of the head. She whipped around to catch a glimpse of the back of a peroxide blond wearing a long leather duster as he turned the corner and headed into an alley behind the building.
It couldn’t be him, could it? She momentarily forgot her shopping plans as she followed him, wanting to see for herself that it wasn’t him. Before she knew what was happening, she was on her back looking into a pair of sparkling blue eyes. “Hello Cutie!”
*********
“Spike! You’re in the sun!” the slayer exclaimed.
“Yep! The big bad is back, little girl, and this time....” he was interrupted by the alarm going off on Buffy’s watch.
“Oh! The mall is opening!” The blonde girl pushed the vampire off of her and headed back toward the entrance.
“Wait a second!” Spike grabbed her arm and spun her around to face him. “Don’t you want to know how I’m able to walk around in the sun?”
“Actually, I want to get to Macy’s like, now!” she was getting irritated with him. “Let go! The sale only lasts three hours, and you are cutting into my time!!” she yanked her arm away from him and resumed walking toward the front doors. “Besides,” she called over her shoulder, “I have to hurry so I can stop by the pharmacy and pick up my mom ‘s medicine.”
Spike stood there watching her retreating form, unsure of exactly what he should do. If he killed her now, her mum wouldn’t get her medicine. Oh well, he’d gone three years without killing her, what was another three hours? He hurried after the slayer, deciding he shouldn’t let her out of his sight.
**********
At first Spike thought that he’d lost her, as he scanned the surprisingly large crowd of people walking around the mall. A good twenty minutes had passed before he spotted her in the shoe store. She was surrounded by shoe boxes with one very tired looking shoe salesman helping her put on shoe after shoe. Spike walked over and plopped down in the chair next to her.
“So, trying decide what shoes you want to be buried in?” he asked her.
Buffy just rolled her eyes, stood up and started walking around in a pair of black strapped heels. “What do you think, Spike? How about I kick your butt in these?”
“Well, if those are the only thing you wear, I just might let you!” he retorted. Her response was to raise her eyebrows in a suggestive way.
Spike looked at her and sighed. No way could he kill her after she looked at him like that! That’s okay, just a slight change of plans. He’d turn her, then she and him could go kill the fungus demon and Dru. Yeah, that’ll work.
“Miss, I think you’re boyfriend likes those.” the sales clerk said hoping that the girl would get them and leave. Spike glared at the man as Buffy gathered up four different pairs of shoes that she’d decided on. She handed the man her mom’s credit card, then looked back at the black heels that she had discarded. Sighing deeply, as if it pained her to do so, she picked them up and put them on the counter with the others. She’d just tell her mom that Spike had made her get the last pair. Her mom liked Spike, for some reason, and Buffy was sure her mom wouldn’t mind.
“Thank you! Come again.” said the salesman as he practically pushed them both out the door. This didn’t even phase the slayer who was already heading toward the next stop, Macy’s. Spike reluctantly followed behind her, hands in his pockets and a pout on his face.
As Buffy started to browse through racks of clothes, she realized her big bag of shoes were in her way. She looked around to find a place to put it, and spotted Spike. The blond vampire was trying to act like he wasn’t looking at the rack of black satin panties in front of him. She got an evil grin on her face as she snuck up behind him.
“Black Satin, huh?” she whispered in his ear, causing him to jump three feet off the ground.
“Well,.. I was just...” he sputtered. Buffy just grinned at him as she pushed her big bag into his hands and went back to hunting for clothes.
*********
Three hours, and several stores later, the two blonds were on their way back to Buffy’s house. Spike was loaded down with about twenty bags as Buffy skipped along beside him, eating an ice cream cone. The sunlight made her hair shine as it swayed in the breeze. She looked absolutely beautiful! Then Spike realized something that he hadn’t before. If he turned her, she wouldn’t be able to go in the sunlight with him. I mean, what’s the use of going out in the sun, if he’d be alone?
“You’re brooding!” she accused.
“No, I’m not!” she gave him a look.
“Ok, maybe I am.” he admitted. “I’m loath to admit it slayer, but I’ve actually had a good time today. I’ve gone the whole day without thinking about Dru.” he grinned at her sheepishly. “Well, maybe once, but I was thinking of killing her.” Buffy just stared at her mortal enemy. He’s a very sexy mortal enemy. She wondered why she never thought of that before. They reached her door, and he handed her the bags.
“Well, it’s been fun pet. See ya around.” He turned and started home. Buffy just stood there watching him thinking hard about what he’d just told her. Suddenly Spike stopped, turned around, and sprinted back up to her. He’d intended on biting her, but as soon as he looked into her big hazel eyes he was lost. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her. Their lips parted and tongues dueled as she slipped her arms around his neck. He threaded his fingers in her hair until she broke the kiss gasping for air. He gave her a sexy grin as he released her, and walked away. This time he did not come back. Buffy spent the next twenty minutes trying to convince herself that she wasn’t disappointed that he didn’t come back. Vampire bad! Oh, but good, good kiss. It was happening again.
Buffy gathered up the bags that she’d dropped during the kiss. He’d said he hadn’t thought of Drusilla the whole time he was with Buffy. This was the first day Buffy had not thought of Angel since he left for LA. Angel! Buffy braced herself for the pain that came along with thoughts of the dark-haired vampire. But Spike’s sexy grin filled her head and all thoughts of Angel were forgotten as she headed into the house.
*********
“He kissed you!?” Willow squealed.
“Not so loud Will, you’ll wake my mom!” the slayer grinned at her best friend.
“I don’t believe you, Buffy! Spike is the bad guy. He hates you! He’d never kiss you!” secretly Willow was glad to know Buffy was thinking about someone besides Angel, even if it was Spike.
“I’m about to go to the graveyard to find him. Come with me, he’ll tell you.” Buffy was seated at her dresser, pulling her long blonde hair up in a French twist. She was wearing a long dark trench coat, and her new black strapped heels.
“I’ll hide, and you kiss him.” the witch told her. Buffy thought about it for a minute.
“Ok, but after we kiss, you have to leave. And you can’t tell anyone! Understand?” the slayer asked.
“Well, no promises were Oz is concerned, but you don’t have to worry about him telling anyone. Anyway I’m meeting him at the Bronze later so I can’t stay for the Spike and Buffy show anyway.” the red head teased her. After checking on her mom one last time the girls headed off to find the unsuspecting vampire.
**********
Spike sat on a headstone watching the sunset. He couldn’t stop thinking about the slayer, and finally admitted to himself that he was in love with her. He was lost in his thoughts when the object of them suddenly appeared before him.
“Earth to Spike!” she teased.
“Come back for more slayer?” he asked.
“Maybe,..“ she was looking behind him for Willow.
“How do you know I won’t just kill you?” he asked her. She looked up at him with her beautiful eyes and smiled.
“I just do.” she stepped toward him and slipped her arms around his neck. He could hear her heart beat quicken and watched in amazement as she stood up on her toes and captured his mouth with her own. To hell with Dru! She could screw as many ugly demons as she wanted. What Spike wanted was right here in his arms with her tongue massaging his own.
Spike broke the kiss this time.
“Buffy, I’d planned on killing you. But I couldn’t. Then I planned on turning you. But I couldn’t stand the thought of taking the sun away from you. You are my sun. The light of my life...er, unlife. If your not with me, then I don’t want to live.” Buffy had tears running down her face as she kissed him again.
**********
Willow had seen and heard everything. Tears glistened in her own eyes as she left to met the light of her life at the Bronze.
**********
Buffy stepped away from Spike, and looked around to be sure that Willow had left. Then she looked up at Spike with her own sexy smile.
“I have a surprise for you Spike.”
“What is it, luv?” he’d already had everything that he wanted. He then changed his mind as the blonde slayer untied the belt of her coat and let it drop to the ground. His jaw about hit the ground when he saw what she was wearing. The black strapped heels from that morning and nothing else!
“Can I kick your butt now?” she asked, then squealed as he tackled her to the ground.
**********
Several yards away stood a strange badly dressed immortal demon. Whistler smiled at the pair rolling around on the ground. They had a long road ahead of them, but if anyone could make it, those two could.
