The 10 Best Shows of 2000
#6--ED
If the whimsical 'Ed' were a romantic-comedy movie, you'd never want it to end. Which is what's so wonderful about a TV show. Unless the ratings eventually prove fatal to NBC's charmingly off-beat underdog (anyone still remember 'Freaks and Geeks'?), there's no reason to abandon the pixilated inhabitants of Stuckeyville, Ohio, anytime soon. Big-city refugee Ed Stevens, infectiously played with ironic grace by Tom Cavanagh, certainly isn't going anywhere. The series opened with Ed returning to his quaint hometown, a burg where the mayor spends his days painting nudes in his office, the job being "not exactly a pressure gig". Ed opens a law practice in a run-down bowling alley, but is most concerned with pleading his case to the girl of his high-school dreams, Carol Vessey (the lovely Julie Bowen). He wears a suit of armour and makes a cheesy music video to woo her. Her response: " I can never quite decide if you're being totally adorable or totally creepy." No question, if you ask us.---TV Guide (December 23-29 issue)
