Wayne-August 2002

Wayne Brady at the Irvine Improv- August 4, 2002

I hate when I have to do this, but I’ve done it again: I’ve let myself fall too far behind in writing this report. This show was months ago, and I hardly remember anything. All I have is notes that I took on a napkin, so this won’t be particularly detailed.

The players were Jonathan Mangum and Wayne (of course). I was quite excited to see Jonathan, as I haven’t seen him performing with Wayne in a while. The show started out with Jonathan asking the audience members for words that Wayne could use in a rap. The words were mamma, booty, midget, hookers, epiphany, attorney, flexcabob, cereal, and telephone salesperson. Wayne loved using booty in his rap, but yelled at Jonathan for the rest of the show for using “flexcabob.” He made him promise never to do that again.

Song Styles: He sang to Betty, who was a retired technician in an 80’s style. I remember this song being particularly funny, as he did something with his water bottle, such as dumping it on himself to make it look like sweat, or spitting it out.

Film & Theatre Styles: Wayne asked for something that could ruin a date. Someone suggested impotence, which they ended up choosing. They had to do it in the style of Shakespeare (my standard suggestion), Cosby, action, foreign, sci fi, gangster, horror, porn, and Pee Wee Herman.

Sound Effects: It was a one person sound effects game, where Wayne was stealing dentures.

Greatest Hits: This game started out with Jonathan, the salesperson, announcing, “Hello, I’m Carson Daley, and I have no distinguishable personality whatsoever.” Here are the song titles and styles:
Broadway showtune: You Just Stop, Sailor!
Country: Trailers, Tornadoes, and Bubba
Aaron Neville: I Just Changed Your Diaper, Please Don’t Go
Nirvana: Midgets Rule the World (I don’t know where this running midgets gag came from!)
Prince: Oy! Where’s My Yamacha?
Opera: Alone and Cryin in Compton
Elvis: Love Me Like A Kitty Cat
Michael Jackson: Explosive Diarrhea
Kids Song: I’m Falling Down the Stairs.

My favourite songs of the night were the Prince song and the kids song. After all, it’s not every day that you hear Prince singing about a yamacha, and Wayne did it amazingly well. The song “I’m Falling Down the Stairs” was about how the child’s family members would come home smelling of Jack Daniels and then could not climb upstairs. And as always, I was very impressed with Wayne’s Elvis song. We know that he’s wonderful at imitations, but his Elvis imitation is one of my many favourites.
