The Wayne Brady Show- Aug. 23

The Wayne Brady Show- August 23, 2001

The security situation on this day was crazy. My mother and I had to wait forever before they would even let us through the metal detector because there was a very large (and loud I might add) party attending. Eventually, we got into the studio and I sat two seats to the left of where I sat last time. This taping wasn’t quite as energetic and fun as the last one. I’ll write what I can remember.
First of all, they started out just with the band playing extremely loud music, rather than with Bill dancing with the crowd. Wayne had special guest Tim Conway with him, and they did a scene on the right stage which was set in a gym. I had some trouble seeing that one and didn’t quite get it. Then they did an “Inside the Actors Studio” parody on the left stage. It went on for way too long, but when they cut it down, I think it will be a good scene. It had some funny moments. The fictional title of the movie was “Those Aren’t My Potatoes.” The audience got to ask questions, and one person asked, “When is it a bad idea to use live fish in a movie?” There was a slight pause of confusion, then laughter. At one point, Tim Conway asked, “Do you mind if I pour myself some water?” and Wayne said Okay. So Conway took the pitcher, nonchalantly poured some water on the floor, and put it back. He kept a totally straight face, but Wayne was in hysterics. After they did these two scenes, they shot the opening dance number twice. Wayne commented on how strange the lyrics were (“Get up, get down, get funky, get loose”). I thought it made more sense to do it at the beginning like last time, because by this point, the audience was kind of low energy.
They did a scene on the left stage about mimes. The set was partially recycled from the Colin scene from the last taping I attended. For this scene, they grabbed an audience member and threw her on the stage to participate. The first one they picked wasn’t very good. She didn’t seem comfortable on the stage at all. They shot it again with a different person and she was much better.
Wayne sang a song on the center stage that meant a lot to him because it was the song to which he and his wife first fell in love. He ended the song with, “I love you, Mandie!”
The last bit featured Chris Rock in “Oklahoma.” It started out with JP, Brooke, Missy, and Jonathan all singing and dancing from “Oklahoma,” then Wayne came out from behind the corn field as Chris Rock and doubled over laughing at the rest of the cast. They did look pretty funny. But Wayne plowed through and finished the scene. After it was over, he asked the director, “Why’d you let me finish? Why didn’t you stop me?” They did the scene again. At the end, the director said he didn’t even know how to fix it. Wayne said he’d never heard him say that before. He tried to fix up the dancing and the singing and they shot again. First, Missy’s hat fell off. Then Brooke’s bonnet slid down. Just when we thought they would finally get the scene right, Wayne’s mike pack fell off. The look on his face was absolutely priceless. Eventually, after many joke alterations, they finished the scene, and Wayne did some blooper tags.
Unfortunately, this is all I remember about the games. The rest of my memories are those of an extremely obnoxious, annoying crowd. I still enjoyed the show, but, I’m sorry, the audience as driving me crazy!
