Dear Abby
Part One

Disclaimer: None of the characters belong to me, you know the drill. Suing is useless, I have no money. This is my first er fanfic so be gentle. I usually write comedy, so this will be weird for me and therefore I'm not very confident about it. But Abby is one of my fav characters and no one ever writes about her so I gave it a shot. I don't know much about medicine so I'll try to stay away from traumas. Any comments can be sent to: super_carolina1@yahoo.com
Enjoy.
'5:12. God, will this day ever end?' Abby Lockhart was on her 13th hour and she felt
like she was about to pass out.
Carter: Hey Abby, how's it going? said John Carter coming out of a trauma room.
Abby: Well, I'm tired, hungry, and miserable, I have no idea where my resident is, my rent
is past due and I think I'm getting the flu. Life is beautiful
Carter: At least you're not sarcastic about it
Abby: I'm a very positive person
Carter: I bet
Chuny: Hey Abby, I need you over here, your flu patient is throwing up something that
looks like clay
Abby: Ugh, I'll give you 20 bucks if you take it.
Carter: No way, have fun.
Abby goes into to see her patient, Luka is there as well as Chuni.
Abby: What's going on.
Luka: It looks like Mrs. Johnson here swallowed her grandson's tub of Play Doh.
Mrs. Johnson: It smelled like Strawberries!
Abby: How much did she swalloed?
Luka: It's hard to tell, and she's not cooperating much.
Chuni: They're ready to take her upstairs
Abby: Ok. Mrs. Johnson we're gonna take you up to surgery. They're gonna decide if we need
to operate to take the clay out or not.
Mrs. Johnson: I wanna go home, my program's on!
Abby: I'm sure your family can tape it for you, ok? Where's their family?
Chuni: They're in chairs
Abby: Ok, make sure they go with her upstairs, I don't want her to be uneasy. And let me
know what happens.
Chuni: Ok
Abby: Thanks Chuni
Abby and Luka walk towards the desk.
Luka: I have to admit that was the high of my day
Abby: Makes you wonder if we're all gonna be eating clay once we reach that age.
Andrew: Hey Abby, there's a guy looking for you.
Abby: Who?
Andrew: There he is, in chairs.
Abby: Oh no.
Luka: What?
Abby: That's my ex-husband. Would you mind hanging around until he leaves?
Luka: Why?
Abby: Just stay close, ok?
Abby's Ex: Abby baby, how are you?
Abby: What are you doing here?
Ex: Just came by to check on my wife that's all
Abby: I'm not your wife, and get out of here, you're drunk. (She tried to stay strong, but
her voice started to shake, as well as her hands)
Ex: I'm not leaving yet, not till we have a little chat
Abby: I'm not giving you any money, Chris, so please leave.
Ex: Listen bitch! If it wasn't for me you'd still be living in that ghetto in New York!!
Abby: GET OUT!
Before she could finish, he threw a punch at her, which she easily dodged since he was
drunk and didn't have much balance. Luka, who had been listening a few feet away, grabed
the guy by the shirt and punched him in the face. Abby's ex fell over and Luka grabbed him
by the shirt, just before he was about to punch him again, security came over and
separated them away.
Security: Whoa, hey. What happened?
Luka: He attacked one of the doctors. Get him out of here before I kill him!!
Carter: Hey Luka calm down, what happened?
Luka: Where's Abby?
Carter: I don't know. What's going on.
Luka: The son of a bitch was going to hit her.
Andrew: She ran towards the elevator
Abby's Ex: Tell that bitch this isn't over
Carter: Hey! Get him out of here. (To Luka) You ok?
Luka: Yea (he said while rubbing his hand) Let's just get back to work.
A while later. Abby was in the roof top looking at the city. She couldn't believe that
jackass came to the place she worked and embarassed her like that. She had begged him not
to show up where she worked. She went back to medical school because she thought things
would get better, but they only got worse. Chris had always been a drinker, but the last
couple of years he was just out of control. Going to med school and being a nurse at the
same time required her to come home late and going to class early. That only made things
worse. Chris started to get paranoid, thinking that the reason she wasn't at home was
because she was cheating on him. After the first time he accused her of that, she saw a
side of him she thought a human being could never have, not her husband anyway. All hell
broke loose. But that was a chapter of her life she wanted to close, and here he is again,
forcing it open. The door to the roof fell open, making her jump
Luka: It's ok, it's me. Are you alright?
Abby: Yeah (she said without looking at him)
Luka: Are you sure?
Abby: Where is he?
Luka: The cops took him away. (Luka stood next to her. There was an akward pause) Did he
try to hurt you before?
She didn't want to answer that, but at the same time she wanted to tell someone. She
hadn't had a friend in a while. Besides all the obvious problems no one ever asked her
that question, she wished someone had. Something about Luka made her believe that she
could trust him. She had heard something from the nurses about his family being taken
away, but she never heard it from him, and she didn't want to push his limits. She took a
deep breath and let the words out.
Abby: When I started medical school I discovered that I was pregnant. It was the happiest
day of my life. We hadn't been trying, but somehow it was a blessing, for me anyway. It
was hard working, studying and carrying a baby at the same time, but I kept going anyway.
Being out of the house made Chris angry, he thought I was cheating on him, and he even
though that the baby wasn't his. He started drinking more and more, I usually tried to get
more hours at work because I didn't want to go home, he turned into a monster. After 5
months into the pregnancy I came home one night, he was drunk, as usual, so I tried to
ignore him. After eating something I went upstairs to go to bed. He started screaming at
me, it made him ever mader when I ignored him. We had an argument and I started packing my
things to get out of there, I just couldn't stand it anymore. Anyway, I was on my way out
when he grabbed me by the arm, he punched me and I fell down the stairs. I don't remember
what happened after that except I woke up on a hospital later, with a bumb in my face, and
no baby.
Luka: Oh, Abby I'm so sorry.
Abby: It was gonna be a girl, I always wanted a girl. She was so small. I even had a room
and...
She had tried successfully to keep the tears from rolling, but the big lump on her throat
made it hard to say the words. Luka didn't knew what to say. He certainly knew how she
felt though, loosing everyone in your family in the same day. He didn't know Abby back
then and he didn't know how she handled it. He knew she was hurting, but it amazed him how
strong she was, or tried to look anyway, that's something he sure knew how to hide. The
only thing he could do now was hug her, after his family's death he had so many people
telling him how everything was going to be ok, doing everything to make him feel better,
the only thing that helped just a bit was a hug when a hug was needed. So he did that.
Abby leaned her head into his chest, it had been a while since someone hugged her. He was
so much taller than her. It reminded her of the way her dad used to pick her up and hug
her for what seemed to be forever. She needed that sense of protection, that sense of
security and warmth, and she was glad that Luka gave her that, even if it only lasted for
10 seconds. And still she didn't cry. She pulled away slowly and felt the night chill on
her body again.
Abby: Maybe we better head down before Dr. Weaver sends her 3 flying monkeys for us. (They
both laughed) Thanks for listening.
Luka: I know what you're going through. And if you ever need a friend, here I am.
She smiled at him and they both headed downstairs. Maybe you can't close a chapter before
closing the whole book. Abby didn't know if this whole ordeal was over, but at least for
tonight she had a new life, a new beginning, and a new friend.
The End.
