Previously on ER
Abby and Lucy had a brief but passionate affair tragically ended by Lucy's death.

Abby sat in Doc Magoo's staring at her coffee. She didn't really want to drink it. Apart from the fact that it tasted terrible, if she drank it, then she wouldn't have any excuse to stay there, and she really didn't want to go home. Not alone. The past few weeks since Lucy's death, she had spent as much time as possible at the hospital. It wasn't that she wanted to work; the thought of the place nearly made her sick. It was more that time spent at the hospital, wasn't time spent at her apartment longing for a drink. That first morning had been the hardest. If Mark hadn't asked her to do an extra shift, Abby had no doubt that she would have stopped at the first bar on her way home. Anything to dull the pain of going home alone.

Since then, only the thought of how disappointed Lucy would have been in her had kept Abby sober. She hadn't told Lucy in so many words that she was an alcoholic, but Lucy had been observant enough to notice that Abby never had anything stronger than orange juice when they were together. Abby would have told her eventually, but the right moment had never come up, and now thanks to that bastard Sobriki, it never would.

Abby sighed as she remembered sitting in Magoo's that night with the others. She hadn't wanted to leave the hospital, but Luka had insisted. "It will do us no good to be sitting around here," he had told her. "Let us get away from this place even for a little while."

So they had gone to Magoo's and had been joined by Dave and Jing-Mei, and some of the nurses. Abby had been enjoying hearing stories of Lucy and Carter when Chuny had walked in. She hadn't had to say more than 'Lucy' for Abby to know with a sinking feeling, that Lucy hadn't made it.

Abby wiped away a tear at the memory. Poor Lucy, she thought. It just wasn't fair.

"Mind if I join you?" Chuny's voice interrupted her thoughts.

"What? Oh no...go right ahead," said Abby. Sighing, she took a sip of her coffee. "I was just thinking," she said.

"About Lucy?" asked Chuny, with a sad smile.

"Yeah," said Abby, nodding. "I mean, I hardly knew her, but..." her voice trailed off. Abby hadn't told anyone about her relationship with Lucy. Originally it had been to avoid the gossip that was bound to spread; then after Lucy died, it would have seemed wrong to bring it up. She had done her best to hide her grief, but it wasn't easy.

"We all miss her," said Chuny, "but I guess it's harder for you than the rest of us."

"What do you mean?" asked Abby, nervously. "I only met her a few weeks before...before she died. I hardly knew her."

"Oh come on, Abby," said Chuny, "You knew her a hell of a lot better than anyone in the ER."

The color drained from Abby's face. "You knew?" she asked, shocked. "How?"

"Don't you remember? Nurses know everything," said Chuny, with a half smile. "We had it sussed a few days later. Hell we even had a pool going."

"Oh," said Abby. "So what was it? How long before we went public? How long before we got caught?"

"Actually, it was how long you'd last together," said Chuny, a little shame-faced.

"I see," said Abby, quietly. "Who won?" she asked sarcastically.

Chuny flushed, "Nobody won," she said, quietly. "We put the money towards a wreath. We sort of felt it was the right thing to do."

Abby just sat there. A tear rolled down her face, and she wiped it away, angrily.

"It's okay to cry, Abby," said Chuny, softly, as she squeezed Abby's hand.

"I just feel that it's so unfair," said Abby, quietly. "Why did Lucy have to die?" Seeing the expression on Chuny's face, she continued quickly, "It's just that it could so easily have been me who took Sobriki that day. I wish it had been me instead of her. I miss her so much." This last bit was said so softly that Chuny could barely hear it.

They stared at each other in silence for a moment. Then Abby knocked back her cold coffee with a grimace, and picked up her coat. "I'd better be going," she said, standing up.

Chuny stood up as well. "You going home?" she asked.

Abby nodded. "Got no place else to go," she said.

"You could come back to my place," said Chuny. "We can make up a bunch of popcorn, trade horror stories about nursing, maybe catch a film."

"I don't know," said Abby, hesitantly. Chuny said nothing. "Oh what the hell," said Abby, sighing. After all, it wasn't as if she had someone to go home to...not now.

Abby lay back on Chuny's sofa and closed her eyes. She could hear Chuny in the kitchen, talking a mile a minute. There was something relaxing about not being able to get a word in edgeways, not having to think about conversation.

"So then I said to him, Mario, you can wear my nail varnish, but I am not sharing my lipstick with you," said Chuny, as she put a large bowl of popcorn down on the table.

"Scoot over a little bit," she told Abby. Abby moved over, and Chuny sat down beside her.

"So what happened to Mario?" asked Abby, lazily as she took a handful of popcorn.

Chuny shrugged. "I threw him out after I came home early one day and found him trying to fit into my nurses uniform."

Abby raised an eyebrow. "I thought you were okay with his cross-dressing."

"Oh I was," replied Chuny. "I just wasn't okay with him playing doctors and nurses with my best friend, in <my> clothes."

Abby laughed at the thought. Sighing, she reached for another handful of popcorn.

"Let me," said Chuny, who had a few kernels in her hand. Gently she popped one into Abby's mouth. "Another?" she asked. Abby nodded. This time Chuny's fingers lingered a little longer than necessary on Abby's lips.

Abby looked Chuny straight in the eyes. "Do you want some more?" asked Chuny, softly. Abby nodded. This time Chuny didn't remove her fingers from Abby's lips.

Abby gently caressed Chuny's fingers with her tongue. Putting her hand on Chuny's breast, she squeezed it gently through the thin cloth of her t-shirt. Chuny moaned softly and pulling her hand away from Abby's mouth, she started to undo the buttons on Abby's blouse.

Suddenly realizing what she was doing, Abby pulled away. "I...I can't," she said, tears coming from her eyes. "It's too soon. Lucy..."

"It's okay," said Chuny, taking Abby's hands in hers. "We don't have to if you don't want to."

"Oh, I want to," said Abby, "but it just feels wrong to be doing this with Lucy only gone a few weeks. I feel like I'm betraying her memory."

Chuny gently stroked Abby's hair. "I'm not trying to take Lucy's place, Abby. I just think that you need somebody to be with, even if it's only for one night."

Abby caught Chuny's hand and kissed it, before placing it on her breast. "Hadn't you better finish what you started?" she asked quietly. Chuny smiled, and continued to undo Abby's buttons. Sliding the blouse off Abby's shoulders, she reached behind her and undid her bra, before feasting her eyes on Abby's breasts.

Abby felt a little self-conscious as she sat there half-naked. It didn't last, because Chuny quickly bent her head to Abby's breasts. Abby leaned back against the couch and moaned softly as Chuny kissed and caressed her breasts. Lifting her head, Chuny quickly undid Abby's trousers and pulled them down, dropping them on the floor. Abby's panties soon followed, and she lay there naked on the couch. Chuny took a moment to take in Abby's beauty before she returned her attentions to Abby's breasts.

Abby arched her back and gasped in pleasure as Chuny slid a finger into her. "Oh God, yes," she cried out as Chuny stroked and caressed her. "Yes, yes, yes," screamed Abby as she climaxed.

Chuny held Abby in her arms as her breathing returned to normal. "Why the tears?" she asked, gently wiping them away from Abby's cheeks. "From your vocal performance I was sure you were enjoying yourself."

"I was, oh God I was," said Abby, with a trace of a smile. "It's just that...tonight is all its going to be, isn't it?"

Chuny nodded. "It's not that I don't like you Abby, but after Mark, I decided not to date in the workplace. It's just too uncomfortable." Gently she pushed the hair back from Abby's face and kissed her gently.

"So why did you...why me? Why tonight?"

"You needed someone," said Chuny, simply. "And I was there. It's as simple as that."

"Thank you," said Abby, softly.

"Don't thank me yet," said Chuny, with a big grin. "After all, the night's not over."
