Unexpected Overdose
Part Five

Anna sat on the floor of the bathroom stall, crying. Her sleeves were soaked
with tears, for she had been crying on them for the past hour. She heard the
door open and she listened.
"Anna? You in here?" Anna heard a voice that sounded like Carol's.
Anna looked out from under the stall and saw pink scrub pants and those familiar
black clogs that all the nurses wear. She stood up slowly and opened the stall door.
Carol looked at Anna. Her eyes were red and bloodshot, her hair was in her
face, and her expression was morose. She sniffled, then asked, "How is
he?" Carol pressed her lips together, thinking about how to say what she was
about to.
"Well, he's in exam room 3. His core temp is up to 95 degrees from the 89
degrees it was when he was first brought in
He's doing really
well."
Carol added the last part to make the situation seem less grim than it already was.
Anna walked over to the sink and splashed some water onto her face. She stood
there looking in the mirror for a few seconds.
"Can I see him?" Anna asked.
"Sure." Carol said, watching Anna walk out.
Anna peeked into the window of exam 3. Carter's bed was the only one occupied.
Looking at Carter, she saw he was wrapped up in blankets. She opened the door
and walked in. She shut the door carefully, not wanting to slam it and have Carter
wake up. Walking over to the chair next to his bed, she felt the urge to start to
cry again.
"No, Anna. Don't cry. Don't let Carter see you like this."
Anna thought to herself. Then she sat in the chair and watched him sleep.
Just the thought of watching Carter made Anna tired. She soon fell asleep.
Carter opened his eyes slowly. As his eyes became accustomed to the light, he looked
around. The room was dimly lit and he was hooked up to about a gazillion machines.
All he heard was Bleep! BLEEP! BLEEP! Looking over to the other
side of the room, he saw Anna sleeping in a chair.
She looks so funny, sleeping that way. Carter thought to himself. I hope she
doesn't wake up. She probably needs the sleep.
When Anna woke up, she immediately looked over at Carter. To her surprise, he was
staring right at her. He smiled.
"How many times am I going to look and see you in a hospital bed after trying to
commit suicide?" Anna said.
Carter just sat there. Commit suicide? What is she talking about?
"What? I wasn't even thinking about that." Carter said, still
confused.
Anna looked at him. "Wasn't even thinking about it? Then what the hell
were you doing up on the roof? Making ice cubes?"
"No, Anna. I went up there just to get away. To get away from everyone
asking if I was okay, from Benton talking and worrying, and from Chase. He woke up
today did you know that? He has so much brain damage and I had to get away from it
all. I tried to get back in, but the door was stuck. I-I tried
I wasn't
even thinking about killing myself
I can't believe you thought I would do
that."
Anna looked at him for a minute, her mind racing.
Should I really believe him? If he says he wasn't thinking about it, he probably
wasn't. I should trust him.
Then Anna did what Carter wasn't even expecting. She got up and hugged him.
