When it finally happened - Part One

Carter walked across the street to the hospital. He spotted Anna walking in. " Anna! Hi! How are you? " " Hey Carter!" They start to walk in together. Carol comes over. " Hey you guys! You're just in time! Weaver's looking for you! " " Thanks Carol! " Carter replies. They walk into the lounge. Carter opens his locker and puts his lab coat on. Anna just stares at him. " Anna, what's wrong? " " What? Oh, nothing. " Carter looks at her oddly. " Okay," he replies reluctantly. He was worried as he wenr to the front desk. He scanned the board and picked up a chart. He headed towards Exam 4. " Hello Mrs. ..." he glances down at the chart." Mrs. Langworthy.I am Dr. Carter. I see you are complaining of headaches and stomach aches. How long has this been going on?" " About a week. I'm not quite sure." " Okay." he turns to Chunni who was waiting." Um, get a CBC ,Chem 7 and a chest x-ray. Start an I.V." he turns to Mrs. Langworthy. " We're just going to run a few tests to make sure you're O.K." He leaves the room.

Anna walks into the lounge to find Carol there. Carol looks up and notices Anna. " Hi Anna! How are you? " Carol notices the look on her face. " What's wrong? " " Nothing, " she looks at her feet. " Okay, I'll tell you but you have to promise not to tell anyone." " Alright. I promise. " " Well, It's Carter. I think I love him but I can't seem to tell him. I don't know what to do! I am too afraid he'll just turn around and run. I love him but I'm not sure he loves me! " " Anna!," Carol bursts out laughing. Noticing the look on Anna's face she appologizes." I'm sorry. I'm not laughing at you, just at what you said. Of course he loves you! Have you ever seen the way he looks at you? You have to tell him!. Mark sticks his head in the door." Anna, Carol, major trauma coming in! MVA! ETA 2 minutes! " Okay! We're coming." Carol answered.

Carter walks back to the front desk." Randi! Are my labs back on that lady in 4? " Oh, uh yeah. Here. " " Thanks." He heads to the light board to check the x-ray. It was clear. He took a look at the other labs. Everything was clear. " Carter, the lady in 4, she's seizing!" " Darn!" He runs to Exam 4. " 5 migs. lidocaine. NOW! Chunni did what was asked. Mrs. Langworthy slowly stopped seizing. Carter ordered a head CT and left the room to find Weaver. He found her in the suture room. " Dr. Weaver, a word please? " " Certainly, Dr. Carter. A moment please." she said to the patient. " Carter, what's up? '' " Take a look at these and tell me if I missed anything. Please." " What happened? Did she crash? " " No, she had a seizure. I ordered a head CT." " Well, I don't see anything at all. I don't think you missed anything. Get the head CT." " Thank you Dr. Weaver." He headed off to Exam 4.

Anna, Mark,Carol and Doyle were in Trauma 1. Their victim had no identification. He was a John Doe. " He's got a positive lavage! Page the O.R. STAT! " Benton came down quickly. " Give me the bullet!!" " MVA victim, no identification, positive lavage, B.P. 110 over 80 Pulse ox 99." Anna quoted mechanically. " Alright, let's get him upstairs, book an O.R." Anna quietly left Trauma 1. She caught a glimpse of Carter down the hall. She quietly watched him as he worked with a worried expression on his face.

Carter was looking at tthe woman's head CT. For some odd reason he felt he was being watched. He turned around but saw no one." I must be out of my mind." Carter saw Doyle in the hall." Doyle," he shouted as he walked over to her." What do you see in this CT?'' He holds it up to the light. " I see nothing. It's normal. Who's is it?" " Some lady in 4. I can't find out what's wrong with her. She seized just as I was looking at another set of labs. Nothing physical is wrong with her!?" " Well let me see the other labs to see if you missed something." " I didn't. I asked Weaver to check them and she agreed nothing was wrong." " Odd. Try full bloodwork." " Okay. I'll draw the blood now." Carter walks into Exam 4 and draws the woman's blood. He sends Chunni with it up to the labs and asks for everything except HIV. Carter does not have consent for that test.

Anna checks the board and everyone's covered. She sighs. She knows she has to speak with Carter sometime. Carol was of course, right. Anna decides to go to the lounge to review some charts. Carter walks in looking distraught. " Hey Anna, have you seen Weaver?" " No." " What's wrong? Did something happen?" Anna thought about that one. Yeah Carter, something did happen. You walked into my life and made me fall in love with you." No, nothing happened." Carter was puzzled by his best friend's behavior. Anna was usually so truthful with him. He decided not to push her." Okay, if your sure you're ok." " I'm fine." Anna assured him. Carter still puzzled left the lounge. Anna hung her head and cried. " Why am I so stupid?''

Mark was standing at the front desk when Carter got there. Carter checked the board. " Randi, are my labs back on the woman in 4?" " No." " Hey Carter, is that your patient in four?" Carol asked. " Yeah, what about her?" " She's crashing!" " Darn it!" Carter ran off to the Exam room. When he came in Weaver had just shocked her and saved her life. " Carter, isn't this your patient? Why is she crashing?" " I don't know!" Carter shouted exasperated.

Anna fell asleep in the lounge. Carol walks in surprised to see Anna sleeping." Anna, wake up!" Anna awoke with a start. She looked surprised to see Carol there. " Have you told him yet?" " No, but I'm going to have to." " Good luck!" Carol left the room. Carter walks in upset. Anna looks up at him. " Carter, what's wrong?" " I got on Weaver's bad side with a mysterious patient that we can't figure out what's wrong. As far as everyone's told me, I haven't missed anything. I don't know what to do!" " Don't worry Carter, she'll cool down. What did you order?" " Well first she presented as the flu. I ordered a chest x-ray, a CBC and a Chem 7. Then she seized and I ordered a head CT. Then she crashed after I ordered blood work." " I don't know how you could have missed anything." " Thanks. What's wrong with you?" " Carter, we need to talk." " Okay. What's up." " Carter, I......I think I love you."
