Previously on ER fanfiction:
Anna came back and found Carter's door open. She went in and found
Carter unconscious. She sets him up, Max calls and she leaves. All
right, here we go!!

**Note: This takes part two months after Anna left again. Carter has
fully recovered but lost the apartment. He is now a Resident Advisor.
Anna knows where he lives. It's close to Halloween. Okay. Now we can
start.

Anna was extremely weary. She couldn't keep running. She needed a safe
haven. She had to go to Chicago. She really missed Carter, and it would
only take two weeks to get there...

She made up her mind. On to Chicago!!

Carter had been told to chaperone the Halloween party. He agreed as it
was in his job description. Halloween was that night and Carter was not
up to it. Weaver came up behind him." Carter!"

"Yes?" Lucy his med student was waiting.

" There's a meeting tomorrow. I'd like you to give a report on bowel
surgery."

"Okay."

He sighed. He would have to research all night. He hoped the party would
be able to chaperone itself for an hour or two. He put Lucy in charge
and headed for the library.

When he returned the party was completely out of hand. He could not
believe it. He walked into the main room and turned off the music and
told everyone to leave. He gave Lucy a dirty look and left the room.

Lucy and her friends were still partying. They noticed a friend of
theirs had fallen asleep. They snuck over and Lucy noticed that he
wasn't breathing. She ran to get Carter. He came and discovered that he
had taken drugs. So had another, apparently. He rushed them to County
and saved their lives. He went to bed that night distraught.

The next morning, the dean came over and fired him. He answered an ad in
the newspaper. It was Kerry's house. It was cheap, so he accepted. Ever
since he had lost the trust fund, he hadn't had much money. Only what he
had saved up. He still wasn't being paid by the hospital.

After he got the basement in Kerry's house, he called Anna to let her
know where he was in case she needed to contact him. Anna had thanked
him. Carter then asked Kerry about pay. She said she would try, but that
it was virtually impossible. They had to find someone else to help Dr.
Ross with pediatrics. As soon as she said that, Anna popped into his
head. A flicker of pain shot through his eyes. Kerry noticed right away.
" Are you all right Carter?"

"Yeah. I'm fine. I'll see you later Dr. Weaver."

He left before she could ask anymore questions. He spotted Lucy down the
hall and told her they had to get to seeing the patients. She asked if
he was all right and he said he was. They saw to some patients.

Randi called to Carter, to tell him he had a phone call. He picked it up
in the lounge. It was his grandmother explaining that he was to quit
medicine and join the family business. Also he could have the trust fund
back. He screamed that he defiantly told her no! He ran out of the
lounge. Lucy called after him, but he ignored her and took the elevator
to the roof. He really needed to be alone.

He looked out over the city. He was really upset. He no longer knew
whst to do about his familly. He went down to the ER and got his jacket.
Before Weaver could say anything, he was out the door headed for
the cemetery where Chase and Bobby were buried. Just thinking about it
made him upset. He really missed Bobby. Bobby had died when he was eight
and he could do nothing. Chase was buried two rows away. He put a single
flower on Chase's grave. Tears started to roll down his cheeks as he
headed back to his jeep. He headed home. He went straight downstairs
and lay on his bed. He fell asleep.

Anna was outside Carter and Weaver's house. She wondered if someone was
home. She went up and knocked. Carter answered the door. He was
extremely surprised to see her. He lifted her up and gave her a big hug.
Anna said that she needed to talk.

Carter let her in and led her into the basement. Anna noticed his eyes
were red and puffy and that he had been crying. She looked around the
basement and noticed it looked quite comfortable. She looked into
Carter's eyes. They were full of pain. Pain he had not shared because
she had not been there to listen.
"Carter, what's wrong??"

"Um......Gamma called me today and asked me to quit medicine again. She
only cares about the family business. Not the family." he stated
bitterly.

"I'm sooo sorry. I can tell that's not the only thing bothering you."

"You're right."

"You wanna talk about it?"

"Okay. After the phone call, I went up to the roof. I did some
thinking. Then I realized there was something I had to do. I had to go
visit Chase and Bobby's gravesites. I realized how much I missed Chase.
And renewed my realization on how much I miss Bobby."

"John, do you want to tell me who Bobby is??"

"Oh. Sorry. Bobby was my brother. He died when I was eight. He had
leukemia."

"I'm so sorry. I don't know what to say."

"What did you want to tell me?"

"It's not important."

"Yes it is. It has to be. You came all the way here to tell me."

"I don't know if I should stay......Max is still after me. I cannot run
anymore. I've had enough."

"Then you may stay with me. I'll help you. I promise."

"I cannot do that. He'll kill you. He attacked you remember?"

"Yeah. Well there's no need for him to harm you."

Anna reluctantly agreed. When Weaver got home, she was all set to chew
Carter out, when she noticed Anna was there. The three of them got
talking. Weaver wanted to know why Carter had run out and he told her.
She was sorry she had asked. She didn't know why.

She asked Anna what was up. Anna told her she was gonna stay with Carter
for awhile. Weaver had no problem, but she wanted to know how long. Anna
told her, as long as she could. She then wanted to know if Anna wanted a
job at County. Anna said yes. Weaver said she'd put in the good word.
She turned to Carter and told him that if she were accepted, his
proposal would be utterly impossible. Carter sighed. He really needed a
pay. Well, we would just have to wait and see.

When Carter and Anna went downstairs, he prepared the bed for her. She
reluctantly accepted the bed and allowed Carter to sleep on the floor.
When Weaver came downstairs to wake Carter up, she smiled upon the
scene. It was kinda funny to see Carter on the floor. She woke them up
and prepared breakfast. Anna thanked her and ate hungrily. When everyone
was ready, they left for the hospital.

Later that day, word had come down that Anna could have a job. Everyone
was delighted, especially Carter. But he was also upset. This meant no
pay. He was gonna get kicked out for sure. Anna sensed something was
wrong and asked Carter. He told her about him not being paid. And about
the job as an R.A.... Anna was shocked. She never knew he had lost the
money. She hoped Carter would pull through. Carter assured her that he
would. There was a crash at the ambulence bay doors, and everyone rushed
to see. What they saw is Max with a gun aimed right at Carter.
