you've heard it before!
I would like to thank my editor Leslie who's helping me get this story off the ground.
Previously on ER fanfiction:
Carter was shot by Max and was unconscious for awhile. He woke up at the end. Here we go!!
Carter was released a week later. Anna was already back at work. Kerry
was around the day he finally got home again. She made him lie down, if
not in his bed, at least on the couch. He'd be able to work the next
week, unless he had a relapse. Kerry made him some soup and he fell
asleep.
Anna got home around ten o'clock. She woke him up upon coming in. Carter
greeted her, and she jumped. She had no idea he'd be up. She sat on the
edge of the couch. They talked for two hours. Anna then went down into
the basement, leaving Carter to think. He was still dazed that Max had
shot him.
There was a sudden sharp pain in his chest. He tried not to cry out. His
medical training told him he should tell Kerry or at least Anna, but he
didn't want to wake them so he sat in pain. He wasn't sure why it hurt.
He undid the bandaging. It was infected, and letting raw materiel brush
his lung. Now he had to tell Kerry, but he couldn't bring himself to do
it. He headed downstairs, where Anna took one look and rushed him out
to the car.
Mark Greene was shocked to hear that Anna was bringing Carter in. She
had called from Carter's cell phone. He was there to meet them at the
door, and led them to Exam 1. He asked Carter to remove his shirt, and
got Anna to help him with the bandage. Now he was also bleeding. The
stitches had torn open. Mark got some suturing equipment and numbed the
area. He sutured it quickly. Anna watched nervously, obviously very
worried. Mark discovered that he needed to give Carter some ointment to
clear up the infection. He told Anna to make sure that Carter took his
medication. He sent them home at about 2 AM.
Carter didn't talk much on the way home. Anna could tell he was very
tired-he was asleep by the time they got home. Anna woke him up and led
him downstairs. She got him a new shirt to sleep in and had him lay
down. Carter was almost asleep before Anna got upstairs.
Kerry came into the living room just after Anna got there. "What
happened?"
"Carter's wound was infected and had reopened. We went to County. Mark
helped him and restitched his
wound."
"Is he okay?"
"Besides being exhausted, he's doing fine. He's asleep now."
"That's good. Did Mark say if he was still able to work Monday?"
"Yeah, he said he couldn't. Maybe an extra week."
"Oh." She paused. "Are you okay??"
"Yeah. Don't worry about me. I can help him."
Kerry said goodnight and went to bed. Anna headed downstairs wondering
what might happen now. She was an imposition in her mind, and had nearly
killed Carter. He said it wasn't her fault but in her heart that was
what she believed. She hadn't noticed that Carter was awake and sitting
up in bed. Anna turned
towards the bed and jumped slightly. Carter grinned. "Jumpy aren't we?"
"Geez, Carter! You could give me some warning! That's twice. I've got to
find somewhere to sleep. I'll see you in the morning."
"Wait! I can't just let you sleep on the floor or something. You can
share the bed."
"Carter, I couldn't. It would be an imposition."
"No it wouldn't! I don't mind!"
"Okay." She lay beside him on the bed. She looked at him and wondered
what he was thinking. He
looked at her and decided to tell her.
"I don't blame you," he stated. He turned over, all set to sleep when
Anna spoke.
"I'm sorry."
"I told you I didn't blame you. Why can't you believe me??"
"I don't know. I just don't know."
