Part One

This is a Carter/Anna Fanfic.
Note: This is not part of my regular series. Thanks to Leslie for letting me continue her
story.
Last time on Luck of the Draw (not the show)
Carter was held at gunpoint by Vince Chaney. Chaney killed himself and Anna took him home.
She got into a fight with Max the next morning kicking him out for good. Go Anna!!
Carter was shocked. He was sitting in Doc's after ordering breakfast with
Anna. Anna had gone to the bathroom. Despite Carter's event yesterday, he
was still planning to work. Anna came back just as the food arrived. Carter
was staring off into space. Anna was worried about delayed post-traumatic
shock. " Are you okay?"
" Huh?"
" Carter, are you okay?"
" Uh yeah."
" Are you sure?"
" Absolutely."
Carter got eggs and ham. Anna had pancakes and sausage. She watched
carefully over Carter as they ate. He seemed a little off. As the bill came
she saw fear cross his eyes. " Carter, what's bothering you?"
" Well, I just can't help think that some deranged relative of Mr. Chaney
will come and get revenge."
" No one will let that happen. Don't worry. I'm sure you'll be alright."
" I hope so."
Carter looked as though he had a lot on his mind, which was true. Mark was
worried and called out to Anna. She hurried over.
" Anna, Carter went home with you right?"
" Yeah, I took him in."
" Has he been experiencing any signs of post-traumatic stress?"
" He's been a little distent. He zoned out this morning at breakfast. He
seems a little shocked."
" I hope he'll be okay, Anna."
" Me too Mark, me too." Anna walks off.
Carter sat in the lounge on a break. He picked up a cup of coffee and drank
it down, letting the scorching liquid trickle down
his throat. He forgot what happened the day before. He just refused to think
about it. He was suffering, as everyone feared, from post-traumatic stress.
Only it was delayed due to the fact that he refused to think about the
incident. He knew he would probably break down if he thought about it. He
could only hope it was not in a trauma. He knew everyone was watching him
like a hawk. They all meant well, but he still didn't like it. He decided he
needed to go to the bathroom. He left the lounge.
At the admit desk, Mark was asking for Carter.
" I saw him go into the lounge a few minutes ago."
" I'll see if he's there." Mark headed for the lounge. He was urprised to
see Carter wasn't there. Just as he left the room, a multiple MVA came in.
Mark hurried over to help with the trauma.
Carter sat in a corner in the bathroom. He just sat there. Staring off into
space as though he were thinking really hard. The events of the previous day
came flooding back into his memory. His tears began to fall. He was so
scared. And alone. All of the sudden it hits him. He feels very, very cold.
And then, he sees nothing.
After a half an hour of trying to save the patient, they lost him. Mark was
worried because Carter had not yet made an appearence. Mark decided to check
the bathroom. As soon as he went in, he saw Carter's body slumped in the
corner. Almost as though he were sleeping. Mark decided to try and wake him.
He shook his shoulder. Carter didn't answer or wake up.
Mark noticed that his breathing was laboured and that he wasn't responding
to stimuli. He had a fever and was sweatting profusly. Mark called for a
gurney and a blanket. Anna and Haleh rolled the gurney over. They helped
Mark load Carter on
the gurney and put the blanket on top of him. They weeled him into exam 2.
Anna was whispering soothing words to him as he was coming around. Mark got
a chart started and an IV. Anna told Carter he was dehydrated and they were
treating him for shock. Carter never responded. Mark used his knuckles and
rub Carter's chest near his neck to see if responded to pain. Not
a single movement. Anna kept talking to him though. She hoped he would be
okay.
In Carter's mind he could hear them. They sounded very distant. Anna was
comforting him. He wanted so much to tell her he would be okay, but his
mouth wouldn't cooperate. He wanted to move. To hug Anna. To respond to
Mark. His mind was working but his body wasn't listening. He just stopped
thinking.
Mark was worried. He decided to run blood work to see if any thing physical
was wrong with him. When the results came
back he noted only that Carter was dehydrated and that nothing was wrong. Ha
concluded that it must be a psycological reaction from the day before. Only
delayed. How did Carter manage this? If it was enough to send him into
shock, it should have happened sooner. Unless........he didn't know. He'd
have to ask Carter. Maybe when he woke up.
Anna knew Mark had told her that Carter would probably not wake up until
morning, but Anna wanted to stay. Really badly. She went to Carter's
appartment and got a few things for him to do when he awoke. When she
returned Carter was still unconcious. She hoped he would wake up soon.
