This is a Carter/Anna Fanfic.
Thanks to Leslie for continuing 'Luck of the Draw'. Wow! I got great feedback on the last
story, so I am going to write another one. This is the second story since I took over. I
hope this one is okay. I think I'm getting the hang of this. This has not been edited. I
think I write a little too much too fast! Kritter's head must be spinning! I have to get
rid of some files so I'd better start posting!!
Dawn broke through the sky at six am. The curtains had not been drawn and
the sun shone miserably on Anna's face. Mark came in and shook her awake.
She stirred and awoke. Mark told her that Carter had not yet woken up. Anna
grew even more upset. He should have woken up by now. An alarm blared and
both doctors turned their heads to see what was wrong. Carter's brething was
getting faster and faster. Mark listened to his chest. His resps were
laboured and his heart was slowing. They gave him atropine to speed up his
heart. He soon had normal sinus rhythm. Anna sighed with relief. " That was
close." She resumed her seat beside Carter. Just as Mark was leaving, Carter
moaned. Mark turned around. Carter made no other sound. He sighed and left
the room. It was going to be a long day.
Carter could hear Anna but he couldn't reassure her. His eyelids felt weak
and heavy. He was so tired. As much as he'd like to happen, the memories
would not leave him alone. All he could think about was Vince Chaney. He
wondered what would happen to Maggie. He shouldn't have done what he did. He
should have called psych. If only he had not been preoccupied with Anna
going away for a weekend with Max. He tried earlier to call out to Anna, but
failled miserably. His thouhgts came back to Chaney. Always back to Chaney.
Oh well. He was tired. But he could never forget the look on Chaney's face
as he held him at gunpoint. He needed help and Carter should not have
turffed him. He was so tired. He drifted off to sleep. To dream the horrible
dream.
Anna looked closely at Carter's face. He looked peaceful, but Anna knew in
her heart he wasn't. Anna should have talked to him. Reassured him. Even
when he expressed his fears to her, she disregarded him. She told him he
would be fine. But he wasn't now was he? He was lying unconcious and they
couldn't do anything to help him. It angered her. How could they not be able
to save him? All she could do was hope and pray.
Mark sat in the lounge. He really did wonder what was wrong with Carter. It
was obviously a psychological thing, and until he awoke, they could do
nothing. He realized how Anna must feel sitting there, beside him. Hoping
that at any moment he would wake up. This concearned Mark. He has been
unconcious for 24 hours at least. That could cause a great deal of memory
loss. That would be bad for Carter. And Anna. Continually explaining things
to people, was not easy. How would Carter be when
he awoke? Would he be depressed as he had been earlier? Possibly, he
concluded. What happened earlier? Where did the complications come from? He
decided he had to talk to Maggie, and hear her part on the situation.
Maggie was in Curtain Area 1 when Mark came in. He asked her if she knew
anything about Chaney. She sighed and told him the story of her giving the
go ahead for Carter to dispense the placebo. Mark listened and told her she
should have insisted on the psych consult. Maggie knew that. She knew she
had been wrong. Mark told her she would have to be disciplined. She knew
that as well. She asked him how Carter was, and he told her that there was
no change in his condition.
Anna was awakened by an alarm. What now? she thought. He was bradying down.
She called for Mark and started compressions. Mark came in with the
difibrillator and shocked him twice. Rhythm restored. His breathing got
worse. They injected him with a seditive in case he were to wake up and
intubated him. Soon, Anna hoped, this nightmare would be over. She sat and
sighed. It would be a long night.
At two in the morning, Carter was extubated. Anna watched. Carter was coming
around. He moaned and opened his eyes. He was disoriented. Anna could tell
by the way his eyes were trying to focus. " Carter? Are you okay?"
" What? Anna, is that you?"
" Yeah. It's me. I have to go get Mark. Please stay awake."
" I'll try." Anna left the room.
" Mark! Carter's awake!"
" Good. I'm coming." They went into Carter's room.
" How are you Carter?"
" Okay, I think. What happened?"
" We don't know. I think it's delayed post-traumatic shock. You are
physically okay."
" What's going to happen to me?"
" What do you mean?"
" Am I in trouble?"
" We'll discussed this later. You need to talk to someone."
" About what?"
" Yesterday."
" Oh."
" You can decide who to tell, but you have to talk to someone. Weither it be
someone from psych or a friend, you need to tell someone."
" Everyone knows what happened."
" Not from your point of view. You can let me know tomorrow. I'll leave
now." Mark left.
" You should put some pyjamas on."
" I don't have any."
" I brought you some from your apartment. I can leave if you want."
" I'll probably need your help. I'm not sure I can stand." he was shaking.
Anna pulled his top over his head and helped him put a pyjama top on. She
helped Carter stand and change his pants. He thanked her and she helped him
into bed. Carter fell asleep. Anna watched as she thought about how relieved
she was that he woke up. She wondered who he was going to talk to.
