Thank you Leslie for helping me decide weather or not to do this.
Screams and shouts were heard from everywhere in the house. A gunshot wrang out. Everyone
froze. " Shut up and get down on the ground!!" Carter shouted. Everyone obeyed.
"I knew he was unstable." muttered Lydia to Carol. "Why did he come?"
"I don't know. I hope there's some sensibility left in him."
Carter spun around quickly. Carol could see fear in his eyes. She knew he was debating
weather or not to do this. Carter legally owned the weapon so that wasn't a problem.
Unless he killed someone, there was no way he could be arrested. Sweat dripped down his
face. He was really nervous. No one dared to move. The room was eerily silent. Carol
wondered if she should try and talk Carter down. She knew if he had any rational thoughts
in his head, he would listen. She slowly got up. Carter spun around."
What are you doing?! Didn't you hear me? Don't make me
shoot you Carol!"
"Carter, calm down." He obeyed so she proceeded. "What's wrong? Can I do
something?" Carol hoped and prayed that the
police weren't coming because anything could set him off. Carter eyed her cautiously then
raised the gun. "John! What's wrong?? Do you want someone to help you?" He
carefully considered this. He knew Carol was a good listener. But he could trust no one.
"Get back on the ground NOW!!"
"Okay! If that's what you want me to do." She cleared her throat. She heard
sirens. Fear flashed accross her face. Carter jumped but grinned. Soon, maybe someone
would listen. A thought suddenly crossed Carol's mind. Somone was coming for a visit. She
checked her watch. 12:15 am. She would be here in fifteen minutes. She hadn't said
anything because the party should have been long over. She slowly stood again. Carter
stared at her again. She cleared her throat. "John, I have someone coming for a visit
in fifteen minutes. When she comes, could you let her in?"
"You can. Who is it?"
"Someone who might just understand you. She'll listen. She's your friend."
There was a knock at the door. Carter motioned for Carol to get it. Carol let the guest
in. She noted that no cops were out front or on the street. She sighed a sigh of relief.
Her guest took off her jacket and almost immediately Carter recognized her. His heart
skipped a beat. It was Anna!! Anna surveyed the scene and looked directly at Carter. She
gazed into his eyes and saw that no professional help could stop him now. All he needed
was a friend. "John, do you want to put that gun down and talk?"
He carefully considered this. "Why are you here?"
"Because of you." she paused and thought a moment. "I need to explain
things to you."
He shook his head. Tears ran down his cheeks. He raised the gun to his own temple. Anna
cried out and he looked at her. She
was silently pleeding with him. She knew if she gave up, he would too. "I really do
want to listen."
"It doesn't matter. I'm gonna finish my life in a nut house any way. Why should you
care?"
"You are beyond professional help now. You need a friend. If you stop I promise you
will not have to see a shrink. Only talk to
me. Right Dr. Greene?"
"That's right! If you promise Anna, you can go back to your normal life. So long as
you confide in Anna."
He carefully considered this. Are they lying? How could he be sure?
