This is a Carter/Lucy fic. It was suggested I write one
and I wanted to try it. I hope this is interesting.I just got some critisism.
It's not necessarily a bad thing, so I am going to try and incorporate that as well. Thank
you! You know who you are! For all of those who are looking for a romance, I'm sorry, this
isn't it. I perfer Carter and Anna.
Thank you. Maybe later. Now I want feedback. I got none and the series suffered. Send all
of it, spare nothing, to amanda_miller33@hotmail.com.
I would love to hear from you! Oh yeah. I don't own any of them, blah...blah. You've heard
it before. On with the story!!! Oh yeah. Mild spoilers for Power, Responsible Parties and
Getting to Know You. Not too bad.
Carter was working the night shift on a Thursday. At about 6am, a woman came in in labour.
Carter took the case. " On my count. 1...2...3!" They transferred her to a
gurney and Carter
began running the trauma. " Hook her up to a fetal moniter, and get an
ultrasound."
The ultrasound came and they examined her. All looked well. The fetal moniter showed that
the
heart rate was normal. " Page Janet Coburn to Trauma one."
Unfortunately the baby was premature. All of the sudden, Lucy ran in.
" You're late." That was all he said. No repocussions, no questions. Nothing.
This surprised
Lucy most of all. She had just returned to the ER and she knew this would not help."
Lucy,
check to see how many centimeters she is dialated." Lucy checked and answered "
7cm."
" Well, it's too late to stop it. This baby's on it's way." Carter was
reassuring the parents
when Lucy allerted him that she was fully dialated. Carter explained that they were going
to
have to push. She did and the child finally came. But Janet Coburn did not. Carter helped
Lucy,
but the baby was not crying. Carter had to intubate her." Get the mother up to OB and
the baby
to the NICU. I'll come up in a minute. Lucy, a minute?"
" Sure Dr. Carter."
Lucy followed him to the front desk. " Lucy, being late is not good when starting a
rotation.
I hope you know that."
" But.....let me explain, Dr."
" No need Luce. Just be on time. Are you coming up with me?"
" Sure. I'd like to see how they are doing."
They headed over to the elevatorand Carter pushed the up button. They waited in silence.
When
the elevator came, they got in and Lucy pushed the button to the fourth floor. " Dr.
Carter,
we have to talk."
" Not now."
" Come on! I need to talk to you."
"Not NOW!"
All of the sudden the elevator shook and stopped. When this occured, Carter had been
thrown to
tht back of the elevator and Lucy rushed to his side. " Are you okay?"
" Fine Lucy. Help me up?"
" Sure." She helped him to his feet and he sunk to the ground once more. "
What's wrong?"
" I think I landed on my foot."
" Let me see." She removed his shoe and sock. As she examined it she noticed
that a look of
pain crossed his face. It was broken. It must have definately broken his fall. She looked
over
to the wall and noticed that the box fo the phone was open, but revealed no phone. She
look at
the keypad noticing it did not have an alarm. They were going to be there for awhile. She
looked
over to Carter, who had his eyes closed in pain. Lucy wished she had morphene with her.
That
could have come in handy. She decided to keep Carter focused on something else. " Can
we talk
now?"
" What is it?" he said irritated.
" Ever since I came back to the ER, you have been hostile towards me. I want an
explanation."
" I want an explanation of why you were late."
" I lost my meds." Lucy admitted.
" What meds?"
" Well I have been on Ritalin since grade school and I need it to function. My doctor
tried to
get me off of it, but I started to fail. Your turn."
" What do you want to know?" Carter asked.
" On my very first day here you mentionned Anna. Who was she?"
Carter sighed. Lucy saw that a look of happiness washed across his face. Then it turned to
sadness.
" She was a doctor here. End of story."
" There's something else. I can tell." Lucy prodded.
" The least you know about me the better!" Carter exploded. He was really
annoyed. His ankle
hurt and he really did not feel like talking. Least of all his family or Anna. He felt
really
tired. He had been on 24 hours.
Lucy noticed Carter's eyes sagging. She was concearned of his injury. All of the sudden,
the
elevator dropped a floor. Lucy screamed and Carter snapped out of his daydream. "
What happened
Lucy?"
" We dropped a floor. I don't know why." Lucy looked over again. Carter was
still sitting there
and he started to drop off again. " Whoa! Please stay awake Carter!"
" Why Lucy? Why should I stay awake? All we're doing is fighting. There's no reason
while we're
stuck here that I can't catch some SLEEP!" Carter yelled.
" Well if you wouldn't get so defensive!" Lucy retorted.
" Me? Defensive? You started this whole conversation! What was that thing? Oh yeah. '
I want an
explanation of your hostility' well I wanted an explanation on why you were late." he
replied.
" I TOLD YOU! You never listen to me!! It's all you, you, you. Never anyone else,
just you. What
do you do when you go home? I bet you go in your nice apartment and have a nice dinner and
maybe watch some t.v. You know what I do? I work my butt off for a decent carreer."
Lucy
screamed back at him.
" Don't tell me about working! I redid my intern year. If I had not have done that, I
would be
in surgery. And I don't even have my own apartment!" Carter exploded feeling as
though he had
lost control.
" You don't have an apartment? Where do you live?" Lucy asked quietly suddenly
feeling sorry
that she had started the stupid fight.
" I...........I live in Dr. Weaver's basement. I rent it from her. I got it after I
was fired
from my job...." Carter trailed off as he lost conciousness.
" Carter! Wake up! Please!" Lucy cried. She had forgotten he had an injury. She
never had
checked his head, she wondered if he had hit. She was kicking herself for forgetting.
Carter
unconcious was not good. No one even knew they were there. All of the sudden they heard
" Is
anyone in there?"
" Yes! There are two of us in here! Please get us out! We'll need to get to the ER
and I'll
need a gurney." Lucy told the man who asked.
" Okay. I'll get a doctor. Who are you?
" Lucy Knight. 3rd year medical student. Dr. Carter is in here with me. Could you
possibly get
Dr. Greene from the ER?"
" I'll try. Stay put. We'll get you out!" And she heard footsteps. And then
silence. Lucy sat
and prayed. That Carter would be okay. She heard a noise behind her. Carter was moaning as
he
was regaining conciousness. Lucy rushed over to his side and tried to talk to him, with no
response. He was just moaning. Carter's eyes fluttered as he moaned once more. Lucy helped
him
lie down. He looked up at her with a confused look on his face. She shushed him and
examined
him, discovering that indeed he had hit his head. A bit of blood matted his hair in the
back.
Lucy could not believe she had missed it before. She cradled his head when the door opened
and
Dr. Greene came in with a gurney. He took one look and helped Lucy lift him to the gurney
as
they left the elevator.
*TIME LAPSE*
Lucy looked into the exam room where Carter was sleeping. He had a concussion, and would
be
released the next day. As for their relationship, still rocky. Maybe some day they could
be
friends. Maybe. But not likely.
