The Way It Should Be
Chapter Five

Okay…I just realized something. Carter didn't move into Kerry's place until Season Five, after Anna left the show. In my story, which is supposed to be taking place in Season Four, Carter is living with Kerry. So I am aware of my mistake. But this is my story and for the plot to work out, Carter will be living with Kerry for the time being. (I don't want to give the plot away.) I hope you readers will enjoy the rest of my story!

"I guess the weatherman was right after all." Kerry said, looking out the window. It had started to rain and it was coming down fast.  

"It's really coming down now." John said. "I hope no one is crazy enough to actually go out there." 

Kerry yawned. "I'm going to bed. Do we have the same shift tomorrow?" 

"Yeah, we have to be there at noon." John answered. 

"Okay. I'll give you a ride. Are you going to bed?" 

John shook his head. "No. I want to watch this movie on TV. I'll see you in the morning. Good night." 

Kerry said good night and headed up to her room. John settled himself on the couch and turned on the TV. He hadn't been watching the movie more than ten minutes when someone knocked on the door. "Who the hell is out this late in the pouring rain?" he said to himself. John got up to answer the door. He was shocked to see Anna there, standing in the rain. Her clothes were soaked and water was dripping off the ends of her hair. She was still crying. 

"Anna?! What are you doing here?" John asked. 

Anna tried to speak, but instead she threw herself into John's arms.

John wrapped his arms around her. He sensed something bad had happened.

"Anna, what happened?" 

"It's Max." She said through her tears. "He lied to me." 

"About what?" 

"The narcotics. He's still using." Anna buried her head into John's shoulder.  

"Oh Anna, I'm so sorry." John caressed her hair and held her tighter. "I'm sorry to hear this." 

"John I should be the one apologizing. I lied to you about Max and acted really rude towards you. I won't feel better until you forgive me." Anna said. 

"I do forgive you Anna, always. There is nothing to worry about now. Max is gone and you can move on with your life." John said sympathetically. "God Anna you're freezing. We have to get you out of these wet clothes before you freeze to death." John took off Anna's coat and shoes. He found a blanket and wrapped her in it. The two of them sat on the couch. John held Anna in his arms while she laid her head on his shoulder.  

"I feel terrible about barging in this late at night and in this kind of weather." Anna said. 

"Kerry's doors are always open. I practically barged in myself when I moved in." John said. 

"Speaking of Kerry, I hope I didn't wake her up." 

"Nah," said John. "She sleeps like a log. Nothing can wake her up."  

Anna sighed. "I suppose I should explain why I came here." 

John nodded and listened as Anna told him about how she found the empty bottle of pills that belonged to Max, and how he wanted Anna's help to stay clean. She also told John that she didn't love Max anymore and threw him out of her apartment. 

"I came here because you told me I could talk to you when I needed it. I trust you John and I knew you'd listen to me." Anna said. 

"I will always listen to you Anna. But now, do you think you can listen to me?" 

Anna nodded. "Of course." 

John took a deep breath. "For a long time now I have been wanting to tell you my feelings about you. Ever since you came to County, I have been in love with you from the start. I love everything about you, your personality, your looks, and your kind heart. I was always afraid of what you'd say if I told you, so that's why it has been a secret until now. When you bailed me out of jail, and when you helped with Chase, I felt that I owed you so much. All I can give is my caring heart to you Anna. I want to be with you so much."

Anna was speechless. She knew John liked her, but not to this extreme. He was willing to do anything to prove his love and kindness.   

"John," she said. "I guess I can say the same for myself. I've always had this schoolgirl crush on you and I never let myself fall in love because I felt Max was the one for me. Now I realize that I should have been with you all along." 

"Anna…I don't know what to say." John said. "But I like you and you like me, so it's a given. We were meant to be together." 

Anna smiled. "I like it better this way." 

John held Anna closer to him. "This is the way it should be." John moved the hair from Anna's face and looked deeply into her rich brown eyes. He passionately kissed her, bringing Anna on top of him. Anna kissed back. 

"Let's take this into my room." John said. He was dying to get Anna's clothes off, as well as his own. 

"Oh God yes." Anna answered. She knew that her fantasies of seeing John undressed were about to come true. The two of them finally made it downstairs and John was in a hurry to get things started. 

"John, let's make this moment last forever by taking it slow." Anna said. She slowly took off John's shirt and began to work on his pants.  

"Anna don't do this to me." John whined. 

Anna took off his belt. "You've waited this long, what's a few more minutes?" she asked playfully. 

"Anna I'm so hard it hurts. Please." 

Anna slowly began to take off John's pants. She kissed him from the chest all the way down to his torso. 

"Anna…" John's voice was thick with passion. Anna finally removed his boxer shorts to reveal a fully erect penis. 

"Are you ready now?" asked John. 

Anna nodded. "I want you so bad." John and Anna, with their emotions and hormones running wild, expressed their love through out the night. 

Kerry Weaver woke up in a cheerful mood. She whistled to herself as she began to make breakfast. But there was something different, John wasn't up yet. He's usually the early bird that catches the worm, Kerry thought. Not too concerned about it she continued to make breakfast. 

John kissed Anna on her soft lips. He was very happy to wake up and see Anna lying next to him. He smiled as he remembered their hot night of passion.  John kissed Anna again. "Wake up, Sleeping Beauty!" 

Anna looked up and smiled when she saw John. "Good morning, lover." 

"Hi. Did you sleep well?" 

"I slept great. We need to do this more often." Anna giggled. "Oh, but what will Kerry think when she sees us together?" 

"Don't worry about it," John said putting on a robe. "I'll go up and talk to Kerry now." 

John walked upstairs. Kerry was surprised to see him. "Well! Look at what the cat dragged in!" 

"Good morning Kerry. Say, is there any chance you could make breakfast for three this morning?" 

"Why?" 

Just then Anna walked in the kitchen wearing John's shirt. It was way too big for her and it covered her whole body. It was at that point Kerry knew what John meant. "Good morning Dr. Weaver." Anna said shyly.

"Good morning. I didn't know John had any guests over last night."

Kerry glared at John. 

"It was last minute." Anna explained. "I really should be going though." 

"Oh no Anna stay." Kerry said. "I'm not mad. I'm just happy to see that the two of you finally hooked up. I guess I win the $250." 

"What? Are you saying there was a bet going on at work whether Anna and I would hook up?" asked John.

"It was Dr. Ross' idea. Every one knew you liked Anna, John. Now the fun part will be telling everyone about you two." Kerry smiled. "Now have some breakfast." 

The three of them sat down to eat. After breakfast was over Anna had to leave to get ready for work. "Thank you for breakfast Kerry. I'll see you at work around 2:00." 

"Good-bye Anna." Kerry said. 

Anna turned to John. "I'm going to miss you." 

John kissed her. "I'm going to miss you more." 

"I will miss you more than more." 

"I will miss you more than more than more!"

Anna kissed John playfully. "I'll see you soon honey."

They kissed again. "Bye sweetheart!" John said.

He looked at Kerry who was rolling her eyes. "What?" John asked. 

"I didn't say anything." Kerry answered. 

Later that day at work it was very obvious that Anna and Carter had hooked up. The other doctors noticed their affectionate actions and knew that the two of them were finally an item. Doug Ross was suspicious of Carter's behavior. "Kerry, Carter keeps taking all the pedes patients away from me and giving them to Anna. Not to mention helping Anna with the kids. All he wants to do is be with Anna. They should just sleep together already.   "

"Oh I wouldn't worry about it." Kerry said." Look over there."  

Doug looked to see Carter with his arms around Anna kissing her and playing with her hair. 

"Kerry, Anna and I are taking a lunch break now." John said. 

"A long lunch break." Anna said giggling. John and Anna left laughing.

"Doug you owe me $250." Kerry said.
