Unexpected
Part Four

Special thanks goes out to JR, and Jim for helping me with my writers block. I knew what I
was going to say but not how to say it! Thanx a bunch guys!
When we left Unexpected we found out that after a wonderful drunken spree Kerry imbibed
just a bit to much, thus leaving her a few months later.. PREGNANT!
"I'm pregnant?" Kerry mentally thought of all the ramifications of her
condition. "Are you sure?" she asked Luka. Her mind literally in shock, she
watched as he turned the clipboard towards her so she could read the test results for
herself.
Pregnant!
The very word stunned her. Technically, Kerry knew she was still in shock from her
concussion, but the very idea of finding out she was pregnant was much worse than the blow
she had received earlier. Pregnancy was a medical condition she assumed would never be
attached to her name.
"Well, I guess its not the stomach flu then," she told him weakly.
"You will need to make an appointment with a an OB-GYN." Luka started to tell
her. Obviously Kerry was going to need to talk with someone about her condition. Luka
wished he knew her well enough to help.
The silence in the room went on for quite a while before Kerry finally spoke. "Can we
keep this between us for a while?"
At Luka's grin, she knew what he was thinking.
"Luka, obviously this is not a condition that I can hide indefinitely, but I want to
keep this between us. At least till I figure out how to handle this." Kerry's eyes
appealed to him. "I don't want this to go further than this room."
Luka took the clipboard from her, his expression became more serious as he told her.
"Kerry you know that your chart information is confidential, but this is, however, a
hospital with people who know how to read and who like to gossip!" Kerry listened to
Luka's deeply accented voice, his accent becoming more pronounced with every word.
"Have you decided yet if you are going to go through with it." he asked her
gently.
"Of course I'm going to go through with it." Kerry snapped, years later she
would realize it had been that precise moment when her decision was made. Any second
guessing, worrying, or wondering had solidified directly into the correct answer for her.
Tomorrow she would worry about the details.
Luka gently teased her by asking her, "Do you need me to tell the father?"
Father! The word stunned her just as much as the word pregnancy did a few minutes ago. Oh
God, she had to let HIM know!. What am I going to say to him. Every since it happened,
I've been avoiding him like the plague. There is no way he's going to take this easily.
He's going to kill me. I should have at least thought of protection. Why on earth did I
let myself drink that much that night?
Finally realizing that Luka asked her a question Kerry pulled herself out of her thoughts.
"I'm sorry, what?" Kerry asked him.
"Why don't you get dressed, then you can go home, and get some rest. We'll talk about
OB-GYN's tomorrow
" Luka smiled down at the diminutive redhead. "Kerry,
everything will look better in the morning."
Kerry smiled weakly at him. "It had better!"
A short while later
Mark leaned against the wall speaking into the phone. "No Doug, but the whole
situation is strange."
He listened for a few minutes before speaking again.
"Listen, quit being an ass. Either you want to help or not." He waited, knowing
his friend would eventually settle down and listen to him.
"The whole situation is just so strange, one moment I'm at the bar with Jeanie and
Kerry and the next I'm making out with Kerry at my place." He paused then shook his
head at whatever Doug was saying.
"Yes, I said Weaver." Mark looked hastily around the small hallway, afraid
someone might have heard what he said. He listened intently to the phone again for a few
moments.
"Actually, she was quite a good kisser!" he replied hastily to Doug's words.
"I'm not insane, Doug, I know exactly who I was kissing that night.." Mark
looked up as Yosh walked past him giving Mark an odd look. Mark realized that his words
had risen a bit and he carefully lowered his tone of voice.
"Look, I'll call you later. I'm not sure this is the right place to be telling you
all of this."
Kerry limped down the hallway. Her ride for the moment, John, had deserted her for a juicy
trauma. As she headed towards the lounge, she thought of how hungry she was. She usually
kept a package of noodles in the cupboard for the occasional lunch that she knew she
wouldn't be able to get a bite to eat. She decided that in her precarious state it would
probably be the only thing she could hold down. She hoped it wouldn't set her stomach off
again.
She opened the door to the lounge and cautiously entered, grateful for once that it was
deserted. Her nose picked up the lingering aroma of hot coffee. The nauseating smell of
fresh coffee caused her stomach to roll. She debated for several moments the practicality
of what to do with it. Deciding that no one would be to the wiser she hastily limped over
to the coffee pot. Deliberately she held her breath and poured it down the sink.
Thoughtfully she replaced the glass container back onto the coffee pot base
Glancing at the full container of Folgers Coffee sitting nearby she realized it would be a
mute point to dump the coffee if someone decided to make anther pot. She debating throwing
it out, but decided that it would be more frugal to just hide it. Kerry grabbed the can
and stuffed it into the vegetable bin in the fridge.
There, now she wouldn't have to worry about that obnoxious odor she thought.
Kerry grabbed her cup of noodles, ran water over it and placed it into the microwave. Her
stomach was just starting to settle down when the timer rang on the microwave. As she
opened it to take out the noodles, Mark entered the small lounge. Kerry sighed, she wasn't
in the mood for another confrontation. Ignoring Mark, she stirred a package of bouillon
into the noodles with a nearby fork then sat down on a small chair to eat it.
"Kerry, I know you don't want to discuss this but I think we need to!" Mark told
her.
At about that same moment in time, but Elsewhere in the hospital
Elizabeth was leaning against the reception desk, attempting to read a surgery consult,
instead her mind kept insisting on confusing her with personal problems. She and Mark had
been dating for quite a while now, and she thought she knew him. Lately though, Mark had
seemed withdrawn. Although there were times when he was overly solicitous, almost as if he
was overcompensating for something. Still, at other times he was rude and snappish. At
first, she decided that he was still getting over the death of his father, but now she
wasn't so sure. To put it simply, Elizabeth was worried.
Every time she asked what the problem was Mark would turn red, and avoid the question. If
she was honest with herself she knew that he had been distant ever since she had come back
from England. Perplexed, she tried to pay closer attention to the chart she was supposed
to be working on. As her mind kept dwelling on Mark, she paid scant attention to the
chattering of voices behind her.
"I'm telling you, its very odd!" She heard a voice say softly behind her. Was
that Chuni, she thought? Or Connie. Elizabeth dragged her mind back to her work.
"Well, all I know is that the test came back positive, so I just want to know who the
father of Weaver's child is!" Chuny's (or Connie) voice caught Elizabeth's attention
with that line. Weaver is pregnant? Will wonders never cease! Elizabeth pretended to be
busy scanning the chart as she listened avidly to the hospital gossip.
"I'm thinking it's Mark!"
'Mark! Connie must be joking! Maybe Kerry was seeing someone with the same name. That must
be it. Hard to remember though the last time that hospital gossip had Kerry paired up with
anyone though, she mused.
"Ok, Sherlock, based on what evidence?" Yosh, Elizabeth's mind
identified the speaker. She firmly stared at her chart straining to overhear what the
nurses were talking about. They had better not be talking about HER Mark.
"Well, I hear
" Connie lowered her voice, making it that much harder for
Elizabeth to overhear her. "That Kerry kicked him out of her exam room, you know when
Kovac was examining her from her head concussion! And you know Weaver, father or not, when
she's in a bad mood, get the HELL out of there! I also heard that she wanted to keep it
quiet.. and I ask you, why would she want to keep it quiet from MARK? hmmm"
Elizabeth had heard all she could stand. She knew now that they were discussing HER Mark.
She angrily stalked down the hall thinking it was time to find Mark.. and if she could
find him.. then she'd just have to find Weaver!
"I really don't think that this is the place to talk Mark, and truly I'm not sure
there is much more to say!" Kerry told him, calmly eating her noodles.
"We need to talk about that night." Mark began as John entered the room.
"Kerry, is it true?" John was so shocked over hearing from Yosh that Kerry was
pregnant that all he could think about was finding her to see if it was true..
Kerry looked up at John and tried to keep her face a mask, she wasn't ready for this. She
tried to bluff.
"Is what true?" Kerry knew in her heart that her seemingly innocence wouldn't
work, but for one brief moment she desperately hoped it would.
"I just found out.. you're pregnant aren't you?! When were you going to tell
me?" John asked her, the hurt apparent in his eyes.
"Oh my, GOD, You're pregnant!!" Mark said, the look of shock in his eyes was
immense! Kerry's attention swung from John to Mark. What kind of a situation have I
gotten myself into?, she thought.
John looked curiously at Mark, he had no idea why Mark looked so shocked, and Kerry looked
like she wanted to bolt out of the room at any moment. His suspicions started to grow.
"Why do you care?" John found himself asking Mark in an edgy tone of voice.
"Because I'm the father!" Mark said to John. John's eyes narrowed at Mark for a
brief moment.
As he started to speak Elizabeth silently walked into the room. She looked from Mark to
John to Kerry, her eyes glinting dangerously.
"Mark!" Kerry tried to get a word in edgewise. For one brief moment all Kerry
could think of was hiding in a cave and forgetting the entire day!
Marks words were the catalyst to setting off John temper! "The HELL you are!
Unless you slept with her, there's no possible way!" he found himself shouting at
Mark.
"JOHN!" Kerry firmly said, figuring that if Mark wouldn't listen to her, then
John certainly would. At least she hoped he would.
"I'll have you know I did sleep with her!" Mark yelled back at John. Elizabeth
blanched upon hearing Mark speak.
"YOU DID WHAT?" Ignored up until now, Elizabeth had been virtually ignored, but
her screech alerted the entire room to her presence. Her words, spoken in a strangled tone
of voice, were eerily echoed by John. At that moment it was hard to tell whose voice
carried the most across the lounge and into the small hallway.
Up until that moment Elizabeth had been convinced that this was some kind of cosmic joke,
some kind of mistake. The moment Mark had announced that he slept with Kerry, all the
gloves came off! "You slut!" Her sharp British voice rolled around the lounge
and the glare she aimed at Kerry would have been enough to freeze an entire room. Instead
it was met with a glare that was so equally intense it caused both Mark and John to take
several unconscious steps backwards, especially since the glare was now being aimed at
THEM.
