AUTHOR'S NOTES: Early last summer, both LovelyLuka24 and I came to know each other at Doug
and Carol's ER RPG. We started rping, with her playing Alyson Delgado (the made up
character), and I playing Dave Malucci. Since then, this story has grown bigger and bigger
and longer and longer, filled with the story of Ally and Dave. We decided that we ought to
preserve this, so with a little bit of copying and pasting, and a little (well, a lot,
actually!) of editing, we created out series:"Still On Your Side". We hope you
enjoy!
Ally woke up with a ringing in her ears. She reached for the alarm clock, but realized
that the noise wasn't her alarm. Rubbing her eyes, she picked up the phone next to her
bed. "Hello?" She said as she sat up
"Hello, this is Nurse Richardson at Dr. Mitchum's office. Sorry to disturb you so
early, but we have your pregnancy test results..."
Ally had just barely woken up, but after that Ally was stiff and wide eyed.
"Miss Delgado? Are you still there?" The nurse asked after a period of silence
"Yes - sorry." Ally said
"We tried to contact you yesterday but you were unavailable...Your test came back
negative"
Ally sighed deeply...and felt like crying for joy, "Thank you so much! Goodbye."
She felt like a gigantic weight had just been lifted from her shoulders, as she hung up
the phone.
Ally sprung to her feet, having to get ready for work. Ally took a quick shower and put
her hair up in a towel as she hurried with her makeup...Ally got dressed and grabbed her
purse...when she realized the towel was still there..."Argh!" She threw the
towel down, grabbed a brush, tossed it into her purse, and ran to her car. Ally brushed
her hair as she made her way to the hospital.
Ally locked up and walked in smiling.."Hey Jerry," Ally looked at her watch,
8:25 - she was early, "Um, at 8:30 page Dr.Greene and tell him I am here..."
Ally went into the lounge and grabbed her lab coat...when she came back out
Jerry called her, "Miss Delgado.."
"Yes?"
"Here.." Jerry said reaching out his hand..."Your name tag"
Ally smiled, thanks...and she quickly put it on..."Do you know where Dr.Dave
is?" She asked before she left...
"Try exam 3" Jerry said with a smile.
"Thanks" Ally walked down the hall, and looked into the exam room. Dave appeared
to be busy, stitching up a patient, so she decided to wait outside for him. Her waiting
was interrupted by Dr. Greene's voice.
"Ally - I've got your schedule, if you'd like to go over it." Mark said.
"Okay, Thanks Dr. Greene." She walked away from the exam room, catching up to
Mark.
I guess the news will just have to wait..............
Dave looked up at the wall clock of the exam room. It had seemed like he had spent the
entire day in Exam Three. First there had been the patient early that morning, who had
gone through a glass window that he had sutured - That had taken over an hour. Then there
had been the three patients who had come in there around lunchtime with food poisoning -
Something that killed any appetite he had. And now, at four o'clock - Nine minutes after
four o'clock, to be exact, he had another patient to suture. Fortunately, this patient
only needed five stitches, which was a big relief after the 78 stitches his morning
patient had needed. He finished up with the patient, and exited the room, almost running
right into Ally.
"Oh - Sorry, Ally." He apologized
"Hi Dave, I well......"
Just then they were interrupted by his beeper. He picked it up.
"Shoot. Sorry Ally, it's a 911 page. Look, I'll talk to you later." Dave said,
feeling badly about leaving her there.
Ally sighed, feeling annoyed. She knew he couldn't help being paged, but she really wanted
to talk to him.
Hours later, after the sun had set, Dave's shift was finally over. Yet, there was no sign
of Ally. He knew she was still on, because he had check the board. He headed for the
lounge, picked up a pencil and began to write:
Ally:
I'm over at Doc Magoo's. Come over there when you get off and we'll talk.
- Dave
Dave gathered up his stuff, and headed across the street. He entered the diner, and sat
down at a booth. And then he waited...
After spending the day with patients and Haleh, Ally was worn out. She was extremely glad
when Haleh said she could leave. Ally walked into the lounge and took of her lab coat and
saw Dave's note..Ally quickly got ready, touched up her make-up and checked out. As she
crossed the street she felt that it was actually a lovely night. She looked around the
diner, spotting Dave seated at a booth.
"Hope I am not too late" She said as she sat herself across from Dave.
"Not at all." Dave was anxious to find out, yet scared to find out the
truth."So, are you...?"
Ally let out a deep breath..."Well, I've been dying to tell you all day...No, I am
not.." Ally smiled..
"That is great"Dave smiled with relief for her
"I'm so happy, I've always wanted kids, but not until after I was married and
settled. And defiantly not this way, you know?" Ally smiled warmly
"You deserve the married and settled way. Not this way. I'm so happy for you"
"Thank you....And thanks again for last night" Ally didn't know if Dave would
ever know how much that had helped her
"Thank you, too. So do you want something to eat? Drink? I haven't ordered anything
yet"
"Hmm...Maybe just something to drink. I am sorry to say, but Haleh filled me up on
hospital food" Ally chuckled
"A fate worse than death," Dave laughed.
Ally joined in the laughter, as the waitress approached.."Um, I'll just have an Ice
Tea with a lemon please.." Ally looked over at Dave
"Um, water." The waitress took down the orders and left.
Ally smiled, as she looked at Dave. She had never really noticed the deep caring eyes he
had - They seemed so full of happiness..Ally looked away..."So..."
"How was your day? Busy? Mine certainly was" Dave questioned
"Oh yes, Haleh won't stop until the work is done. She's a sweet soul, but boy she's a
hard worker too..."
"Oh, I know. Believe me." Dave said as the waitress came back with their drinks.
"I barely had time to breathe today. I kept on getting emergency pages."
"So I Noticed..." Ally grinned...
"A day filled with car accidents, suicide attempts, broken bones - well usually every
day has all of those. But there were a lot more than usual."
"You must be exhausted" Ally said as she gulped some ice tea
"For some reason I'm not." He said
"What did that waitress put in your drink?" Ally said sarcastically
Dave laughed. He was so glad how the day had turned out "No. Maybe it was the extra
sleep I got yesterday - In the lounge, in a chair at my kitchen table...."
Ally then laughed.."Oh you reminded me - I forgot to soak my coffee stained shirt in
cold water...If it wasn't for your sleeping in odd places I wouldn't have to..." Ally
jokingly accused
"Everything's always my fault!" He shook his head,"So now I suppose that I
have to buy you a new shirt..." He said sarcastically
Ally laughed..."Or you can buy me some of that shout stain detergent that you just
spray on.."
"You've got yourself a deal" Dave laughed
"Alright then! let's shake on it..." Ally grinned, hold out her hand
He took her hand, but didn't let it go. He squeezed her slim hand, and eventually released
it.
Ally felt chills go up her spine and started to wonder if he'd let go when he suddenly
did...Ally cleared her throat "Now its official.." She said trying to remember
what they even shook on
"I'll leave the detergent on your doorstep. With a big bow on top." He smiled at
her.
Ally laughed..."The neighbors aready think I am crazy -This morning I almost came out
with my hair still in a towel."
"You sound like me! My first day at my apartment, one of my friends left all these
insane messages on my door. Now my neighbors don't even come near me!"
Ally laughed."Thanks for the drink" She said
"No problem", he finished up his water "Do you want anything else?"
Ally watched Dave get his wallet out when Dave's voice startled her...and she looked up
"No..I am fine thanks.."
"Would you like a ride home?" Dave asked as he paid the bill, "My car's
right across the street."
Ally looked up...She was about to say No when her therapist's words popped in her head. You
have to learn to overcome obstacle's...and learn to trust again "Um...Sure"
Ally said, thinking to herself, It's okay -You can trust Dave
Dave got up, and they walked across the street to the parking lot. He unlocked the car,
and opened the passenger's side door for Ally. Then he got in, buckled his seat belt, and
started the car. "Um, where do you live?" He asked as he pulled the car out of
the parking lot
Ally smiled, "That might be a good thing to know...I live about 4 blocks down on
Morrison Ave. - Small little white house, white picket fence...the one that hasn't been
mowed for ages" Ally laughed
When he got to the street, he noticed an "UNDER CONSTRUCTION" sign. The road was
blocked. "Um looks like I can't get through" he said "Here, I'll park
here", he parked the car not too far from Ally's street..
Ally got out..."Must have started the construction today while I was gone..."
Dave started to get out too. "I'll walk you to your door"
"Thanks" Ally said...She hated the idea of walking home alone anyway
They walked along, until they finally got to Ally's house. "Well, goodnight
Ally."
Ally put her hands in her pockets "Goodnight Dave, thanks a lot..." Then Ally
started to laugh...
"What? What's so funny?" Dave asked confused, hoping that she wasn't laughing at
him.
"What about my car? My poor car...How will I get to work tomorrow?" Ally said
"What time are you on?"
"Well, 8:30, But I usually leave a little after 8"
"I can give you a ride."
"Its not totally out of your way is it?" She hated being a burden
"No - it's not out of the way. I live a couple of blocks from here."
Ally smiled, "Well..Ok then...you might have to wait a little in the morning...Ally
unlocked her front door. Thanks, and Have a Good night...Be Careful walking back to
your car" She called after him
"I will." He said, "See you in the morning."
Ally went inside and before she knew it was asleep and dreaming away..
Dave turned around as soon as he saw that Ally was safely in her house. He began the walk
to his car, feeling like he was one of the luckiest people in the world. Ally was
wonderful, and he really looked forward to getting to know her better. He felt lighter
than air, happier than he had in ages. But suddenly he got this sinking feeling in the pit
of his stomach - the one you get when something terrible is about to happen....
SMACK!
Something hit him over the head, as he heard a voice say:
"What are you doing with her, boy? She's mine."
Suddenly, he could feel a fist punching his face repeatedly. Ever punch stung, as the
person hit him in the chest, in the stomach. He tried to raise a hand to fight back, but
every time he did, he felt overcoming dizziness hit him. A slight cut of something - a
broken bottle perhaps - created rising blood across his arm, as his attacker pushed him to
the ground. Then the kicking began, all over his body, as he prayed for his life. Finally,
the man left, leaving Dave sprawled out across the sidewalk.
The street was pitch black, except for the one streetlight on the other end of the street.
Not a porch light, not a person was out. He was too weak to get up, to try to get to his
car, or to Ally's house, so he began to yell for help.
But his cries came out just above the level of a whisper, and was then replaced by his own
moan in pain. He prayed that Ally had locked her doors. He tried to stay awake, tried to
keep his eyes open. As long as you stay awake, you stay alive, he reminded
himself. But just then, a new wave of pain rose, and forcing his eyes to fight to stay
open.
He lost, and everything went black....
