August 1983: Justin Marler is Phillip's Father

Phillip
Tell me the truth.

Justin
What are you talking about?

Phillip
You know damn well what I’m talking about.

Justin
Phillip, this isn’t right.

Phillip
Look, we’re not going anywhere until you tell me. Now, I want to know right now.

Alan (reaching in to touch Phillip’s shoulder)
Take it easy.

Phillip (pushing him away)
Get your hands off of me. Well?

Justin
Look, I didn’t want it to happen this way.

Phillip (pause)
Oh God, it’s true, isn’t it? That you’re my father?

Justin
Can we go somewhere private?

Phillip (yelling)
Just answer me! (Looks at both men.) Neither one of you has got the guts to tell me, huh? Come on, who’s going to say it?

Justin
There’s so much to explain.

Phillip (Getting increasingly angry)
I don’t want explanations. I just want you to say it. Can you do that?

Justin (yells)
Yes! I am your father.

Phillip (reeling and yelling)
God! (He start knocking over tables in the Country Club.) So you’re my dad, huh? (Shoves everything off a buffet table.) Great!

Justin
Phillip, come on...

Phillip
Get away from me! You stay away! (Pause. Runs his hand through his hair. A bit calmer.) Oh, that figures, doesn’t it? What kind of idiot am I? Who would have ever figured. (Sarcasm to Justin.) Look at us. We don’t look alike, do we? (Justin moves toward him.) Stay away! (Alan approaches.) You too, Mr. Spaulding! Is that what I have to call you now? Hell, maybe I know you well enough to call you Alan. I sure as hell can’t call you Dad anymore. (Pause, crying.) My whole life I’ve been trying to be like you. I wanted to be you so much when I was a kid I...I wanted to change my name to Alan Spaulding Jr., that’s how much I wanted to be like you. I used to practice the name at night, signing. I finally got my nerve up enough to ask and then I chickened out. Well, hell, I guess it’s a good thing I did, huh? Alan-Michael would have lost out and that wouldn’t be right. After all, he IS your son. Isn’t he?

Alan
Phillip, don’t do this.

Phillip (Seething)
Don’t you ever tell me what to do again.

Justin
Phillip, would you let us try to explain?

Phillip
Yeah, you explain. You try to explain to me why my whole life has been a lie. You go ahead and try. (Pause, then pleadingly angry.) How could you do this to me? How could you do this to me? Damn it! (Kicks something over.)

Justin
We did it because we love you.

Phillip (That was just too much. Shocked crying then bitter laughter)
You did it because you love me. Oh, isn’t that great. You’re too much. Enough isn’t enough for you, is it? Not one lie. To cover the other one you’ve got to tell another lie.

Justin
Phillip, just listen to me.

Phillip (Full-blown anger now)
No, I’m not going to listen to you! I’m not going to listen to either one of you ever again! You hear me? I’ve had enough of your lies! I never want to hear another!
