June 1983: When Phillip Met Beth

(The Country Club stables. Mindy, dressed in bloomers for Quint and Nola’s engagement costume ball, is stroking the mane of Vanessa Chamberlain’s horse, Boss. Mindy desperately wants Vanessa to sell her the horse, and has been bugging her new “challenge,” Phillip, to let her ride it. She has big plans for both the horse and Phillip).

Mindy: (Opening Boss’ stall)
Hey, boy. You think Phillip’s the only one who can ride you, huh? Got a mind all of your own, huh? Can’t be tamed, hey? Yeah, well, you’ll be mine. You and the boy who rides you. Your lesson’s tonight.

(She hops on the horse’s back).

(Inside the Country Club. Quint and Nola’s “Gone With the Wind” engagement party is in full swing. Rick, wearing a Confederate army uniform, weaves in and out between couples on the dance floor and sits down at a table. Seconds later, Phillip, wearing the same costume, bounds down the stairs and joins Rick at the table).

Phillip: (Sitting down)
Hey.

Rick:
I was wondering when you were going to get back again.

Phillip:
I was THIS close to the front door when the old man spotted me.

Rick:
Well, at least I’ve got to give you credit. You almost escaped.

Phillip:
Almost isn’t good enough. He paraded me in front of the governor. I had to think of something charming and witty to say.

Rick:
Aw, like “Glad to meet you?”

Phillip:
My words exactly. And I almost choked on them. I hate that guy. He is such a jerk.

Rick:
Why does he have all these people traveling with him all the time?

Phillip:
Trying to make him look like he knows what he’s doing.

Rick:
Okay. All right. Why were you so high on leaving tonight?

Phillip:
I just had something I had to take care of. (Bringing Hope home).

Rick: (Laughs)
Well, that tells me a lot.

Phillip:
It was nothing. What have you been up to?

Rick:
Just having a great time Phillip. A great time. A fantastic time. Right after you pulled out, Mindy left.

Phillip:
Where did she go?

Rick:
I don’t know.

Phillip:
Well, did she say anything?

Rick:
The only thing she said was something about getting your attention. That’s about it.

(Realization dawns on Phillip’s face).

Rick:
What’s wrong?

Phillip:
Damn it. Boss. He could kill her.

(They get up and start running to the stables).

Rick:
We’ve got to try to stop her.

(The stables)

Mindy: (Yelling out the stable door after the escaped Boss)
Boss! Come back Boss! Come back! (Hitting the door) Oh, go ahead. Don’t come back. See if I care! I bet that witch Vanessa Chamberlain will care when she doesn’t see him. (She runs back into the stables and slams Boss’ door shut) Oh, Phillip’s going to hit the roof when he sees he isn’t here.

Phillip: (Off screen)
Mindy?

Rick: (Off screen)
Mindy?

Mindy: (In a panic)
Oh!

(She purposefully runs into a support beam with her forehead. She kicks her foot on the door to Boss’ stall and winces in pain. Seeing Phillip and Rick approaching through the window, she opens the stall door and arranges herself underneath it. Pausing for a second, she pulls the strap of her outfit down off her shoulder and lies down, pretending to be unconscious).

Phillip: (Coming in with Rick)
Mindy? (Spotting her on the floor) Aw, God. (Kneeling down beside her). Mindy? Come on.

Rick:
Mindy, can you hear me?

Phillip:
I knew she’d try something stupid like this! Boss is out of his stall and he’s gone. He must have thrown her.

Rick:
Phillip, get the pail and put it underneath her feet.

(He does just that).

Rick:
Mindy, can you hear me?

Phillip:
Did she say anything? Is she coming around?

Rick:
No, it doesn’t look like it.

Phillip: (Standing up and going to the telephone)
Listen, go get her father. I’m going to call an ambulance.

Rick: (Running out)
Hope she’s okay.

Phillip: (Frustrated and dialing)
I don’t know. (Kneeling down besides Mindy with the phone). Crazy girl. I’ve got to watch you every minute! (In the phone). Yeah, I need an ambulance. The Lakeland Country Club. The stables.

(The bar room of the Country Club. Billy is talking to Josh, Hillary, Mike and Trish when Rick runs in).

Rick:
Mr. Lewis?

Billy:
What is it, son?

Rick:
It’s Mindy. She’s been thrown from a horse.

Trish:
What?

Rick:
She’s hurt.

Billy:
Where is she?

Rick:
She’s down in the stables.

Trish:
My God.

Josh:
I’ll go see if I can find Ed.

(The whole bunch of them run out to find Mindy).

(The Emergency Room of Cedars Hospital. Lillian is working extra hours at the desk. Kelly Nelson is the doctor on call.)

Kelly: (Handing Lillian a chart)
Lillian, I moved Mr. Rosen up to CCU.

Lillian:
How’s he doing?

Kelly:
Well, it was touch and go for awhile, but I think he’s going to be all right now. Dr. Freed’s in there working.

Lillian:
Did you talk to his wife?

Kelly:
Yeah. I’ll tell you, it’s good to deliver some good news for a change.

Lillian:
How are you doing?

Kelly:
Truthfully? I’m just counting the hours so I can get some sleep.

Lillian:
Now that you’re an intern, you’re going to start counting the years, not just the hours.

Kelly:
Why was it that I wanted to become a doctor?

Lillian:
It’s because you’re a masochist. No really, really. You can go back to school, you could study accounting and have very normal hours, nine to five.

Kelly:
What, and miss pulling the night shift with you? No way!

Lillian:
That’s right. You’re right. It has been quite a night, hasn’t it?

Kelly:
Really.

(A man who appears drunk walks in. Kelly goes to him).

Kelly:
Sir, sir, right this way. (Directing him down the hall). Go right to the lady in white at the end of the hall there, and she’ll take care of you. (To Lillian) Wouldn’t you know? The night that I get stuck with Emergency and a small war breaks out at a local dive.

Lillian:
Speaking of breaks, you started three hours ago, and I think now would be a good time…

(Too late. In comes the Mindy Lewis entourage: Mindy, Billy, Phillip, Rick, and Hillary Bauer. Billy is in a state).

Billy:
I want a doctor here now! I want a doctor!

Kelly:
All right. Calm down sir. Hillary, what’s the case?

Billy:
She fell off a horse.

Hillary:
Her pulse is steady. Her breathing is normal.

Kelly:
Did anyone see the accident?

Phillip:
No, we just found her in the stable.

Rick:
We found her lying there unconscious.

Billy:
Hey look, you can ask questions later. Just get a doctor in here!

Kelly:
Calm down, sir. I am a doctor.

Billy:
Come on! How old are you, son?

Kelly:
Take her into the examining room please, Hillary. Call x-ray and order a complete series. Lillian, page Dr. Riker. (To Billy as they start to roll Mindy in). Excuse me.

(Billy tries to follow. Lillian grabs him by the arm).

Lillian:
Sir? Sir? I’m afraid you can’t go in there.

Billy:
That’s my daughter in there.

Lillian:
Oh, I know. I understand. But once the doctor’s through examining her, he’ll come out and talk to you.

Billy:
Look, I’m not going to stand out here and do nothing.

Lillian: (Leading him to her desk)
Well, yes, I have something very important for you to do. I need you to fill out some papers for me.

(Hillary moves Phillip and Rick away from the door).

Lillian:
If you’d just fill those out for me I’d appreciate it. (She picks up the phone to call Dr. Riker). Dr. Riker to emergency, please. Dr. Riker to emergency. (Billy throws down the pencil and heads for the examining room). Sir? Sir you can’t go in there! (He ignores her).

(Later, Billy and Kelly come out of the patient area into the waiting area of the Emergency Room).

Kelly:
I gave your daughter a preliminary examination, Mr. Lewis, and from all indications there’s no sign of serious injury.

Billy:
Then she’s going to be all right?

Kelly:
Well, she’s still complaining of discomfort, so I’d like to keep her in for observation.

Billy:
Where is she now?

Kelly:
She’s going to undergo a full examination and tests. Dr. Riker’s with her, and she should be up on the fourth floor in about an hour.

(Billy nods and leaves. Kelly walks up to Lillian at the Nurses’ Desk).

Kelly:
Lillian, can I have the Carlin chart, please?

Lillian:
Sure.

Kelly:
And would you also call the lab and have them send the report up on Mindy Lewis up to Dr. Riker as soon as possible?

Lillian:
Mindy Lewis, okay.

Kelly:
Anyone wants me, I’m going to be in the cafeteria.

Lillian: (Picking up the phone to call the lab)
Alleluia. Yes, can I have the fourth floor…

(Kelly stops to help an emergency team roll in a stretcher. It’s an unconscious Beth followed by Bradley. Lillian looks up).

Lillian:
Beth!

(She drops the phone and runs to her daughter).

Kelly:
Take her into ER for us, stat.

(Beth’s gurney is rolled away. Lillian turns to her husband).

Lillian:
Bradley, what happened?

Bradley:
She fell.

(The next morning. Mindy and Beth are sharing a hospital room. Mindy is, loudly, watching cartoons. Beth, who is lying behind the TV, is trying to rest. She tosses and turns due to the loud noise).

Billy: (Off set)
I’m going to see my little girl!

(Hearing her father’s voice, Mindy shuts off the television and pretends to have been sleeping. Billy walks in with a huge bouquet of flowers).

Billy:
How are you doing, darlin'? You get any sleep last night? (He gives her a kiss).

Mindy:
Oh, a little. Well, when the pain wasn’t too bad.

Billy:
I could just kill that horse for doing this to you.

Mindy:
Well, it’s all right, Daddy. I’m sure I’ll be fine…eventually.

Vanessa: (Entering with a present)
Mindy? Oh Mindy, dear, how are you? We’ve all been so worried.

Billy:
Worried about Mindy, or about the lawsuit I’m going to file?
