June 1983: When Phillip Met Beth [4]

(Alan’s office at Spaulding Enterprises).

Virginia:
Here are the figures you requested, Mr. Spaulding.

Alan:
Thank you, Virginia.

Virginia:
Oh, and your son is here to see you.

Alan:
Oh, send him right in.

Virginia:
Phillip, you can come in now.

Phillip:
Thank you.

Alan: (Standing up)
Hello Phillip. Well, I didn’t see much of you last night.

Phillip:
Oh, I guess not. You were spending all your time with the governor.

Alan:
Come in. Sit down. I was hoping you’d spend more time with him too, but you were busy taking Hope home.

Phillip:
Yeah, well, um, she wasn’t feeling too well.

Alan: (While they both sit down)
Yes, well excessive drinking does that to people.

Phillip:
Well, she wasn’t really THAT drunk, Dad.

Alan:
If you say so.

Phillip:
Well, obviously she had a few but, uh, I think there was something that was kind of upsetting her.

Alan:
Yes, she said she was nervous about going to the party with me, if that makes any sense.

Phillip:
Maybe it does to her.

Alan:
Is that what she told you?

Phillip:
What do you mean?

Alan:
I mean last night. You haven’t talked to her today, have you?

Phillip: (Covering)
Last night she really didn’t say very much. She was kind of quiet. But I could just tell by the way she was that she was really upset about something…

(Alan’s phone interrupts).

Alan:
Yes Virginia? Fine, send her right in. (To Phillip, after hanging up). It’s Trish. You don’t mind, do you?

Phillip: (Standing up to greet Trish)
Too late now if I do.

Trish: (Entering)
Oh, Phillip, hello.

Phillip:
Hi, how are you?

Trish:
Oh, Alan, why don’t I come back a little bit later?

Alan:
Oh no, that’s all right. I wanted to tell you that the proposal you wrote and left on my desk this morning was excellent. I’ve already initialed it and sent in on to Henry.

Trish:
Thank you. Actually that’s what I came to see you about.

Phillip:
Yeah, have you talked to Mindy today?

Trish:
I’m going to the hospital in a little bit. I talked to Billy, and apparently they’re going to keep her under observations for a few days, but she’s going to be fine.

Phillip:
Oh, that’s good. She shouldn’t have try to ride Boss. He’s a lot of horse to handle. I did tell her that.

Trish:
Well, I’m afraid Mindy inherited her father’s stubborn streak.

Alan:
Well, I’m glad you represent the reasonable side of your family.

Phillip:
Yeah, I’m going to go see her in a little while.

Trish:
I’m sure she’d love that. I’m going to leave you two alone.

Phillip:
Bye.

Alan:
Thank you again.

Trish: (Leaving)
Thank you.

Alan:
She’s doing a fine job. I’m going to promote her.

Phillip:
That’s great. Um, I’ve got to get going too. I’ve got a lot to do before I go to school.

Alan:
I thought school was out about now.

Phillip:
Well, just about. We’re into final exams now, and then there’s just graduation and the prom.

Alan:
You going to have any problem with that?

Phillip:
Well, I’m going to graduate if that’s what you mean, but, uh, I think I’m going to skip the prom.

Alan:
Oh? Why?

Phillip:
Oh, Dad, somehow standing around some cafeteria decked out like a Caribbean island just doesn’t sound like my idea of a good time.

Alan: (Laughing)
Well, I can understand that, but I wish you’d consider going. After all, the Spauldings have a public image to maintain in Springfield.

Phillip:
Is that why you were so ticked off at Hope last night?

Alan:
That’s nothing for you to worry about. As far as I’m concerned, Hope and I have not a problem in the world.

(We see Hope pour a drink as we go to a break).

(Lillian comes into the hospital room with sketchpads).

Lillian:
Hi honey. You feeling any better?

Beth:
I’m starting to, yeah.

Lillian:
Look what I got you down in the gift shop. I thought if you felt like it you could do some sketching.

Beth: (Smiling)
Oh, thanks Mama.

Lillian: (Sitting down on Beth’s bed)
Are you… (touching her cheek) Are you really feeling all right?

Beth:
I’m…I’m a little sore, but I’ll be okay.

Lillian:
You know you mean more to me than anything in the whole wide world, don’t you?

Beth:
I know, Mama.

Bert: (Entering with Beth’s requested book)
Lillian? Hello!

Lillian:
Oh, Bert, how was Florida?

Bert:
Well, it was just what the doctor ordered.

Lillian:
You look it! Have you met my daughter, Beth?

Bert:
Well yes, she’s the reason I came in here. (Handing Beth the book) I found it right away, dear.

Beth:
Oh, thanks a lot Mrs. Bauer.

Lillian:
That was awfully nice of you to go to all that trouble.

Bert:
Oh, it was no trouble to do something for a nice girl like Beth.

Mindy:
Hello Mrs. Bauer.

Bert: (Turning to Mindy)
Oh, hello Mindy. (Turning back to Lillian and Beth with her back towards Mindy). I hope the book makes you feel better dear, and if you want anything else, you just holler.

Beth:
Okay.

(Bert turns to leave and runs into a whistling Phillip, who enters holding a gift).

Phillip:
Hey, Bert! Welcome back!

(They hug and kiss).

Bert:
Oh, thank you.

Phillip:
How’re you doing?

Bert:
Hey, I felt really bad to find out you’re not going to be around the hospital any more.

Phillip:
Well, that’s okay. You’ll see a lots of me these next few days. I’ll be here visiting this rascal (Gesturing toward Mindy).

Mindy:
Hey, Phillip. (Pointing to the present). Is that for me?

Phillip: (Handing it to her)
Well, it’s got your name on it.

Mindy: (Pleased)
Ah.

Bert:
Um, I’ll be seeing you around later dear.

Phillip:
Okay.

Bert:
And feel better, Beth!

Beth:
Thank you Mrs. Bauer.

Lillian:
Wait Bert. I’ll be right with you.

Bert:
Oh, okay.

Lillian:
I have to get back on the floor myself.

(Bert and Lillian leave. Phillip glances at Beth and then walks to the foot of Mindy’s bed as she opens her present).

Mindy:
Oh, Phillip! I didn’t know you had such good taste!

Phillip:
I don’t.

Mindy: (Holding up a lacy nightie)
But this is beautiful.

Phillip:
It’s not from me.

(Shot of Beth smiling. She sees how Phillip is playing through Mindy’s flirtations).

Mindy:
Then why did you carry it in?

Phillip:
It was at the Nurses’ Station. I just brought it in with me.

Mindy: (Reading the card)
Hmm…It’s from that stupid Vanessa Chamberlain. You know the only reason she’s doing this? She’s afraid my Daddy is going to sue her.

Phillip:
Well, your Daddy’s got no right to sue her. You’re the one that was wrong. Boss was all safe and locked up until you let him out of his stall.

Mindy:
Nobody seems to care that I was nearly killed! (Phillip laughs). I’m glad I’m going to Europe, getting out of this tacky old hospital.

Phillip:
You know, it really is kind of a shame you’re going.

Mindy:
Why?

Phillip:
Well, if you would have been here, I would have asked you to my prom.

Mindy:
Well, I can go with you to your prom. I’ll just cancel my trip. I didn’t want to see a bunch of old ruins anyway.

Phillip:
No, no, I couldn’t ask you to cancel. Not after your accident and everything.

Mindy:
Well, I’m feeling better. Really, a lot better.

Phillip:
No, that’s really brave of you, but I couldn’t ask you to make that kind of sacrifice.

(Shot of Beth smiling again. She knows Phillip is laying it on thick here).

Mindy:
It’s no sacrifice. Look, I’m going with you, and don’t give it another thought.

Phillip:
Are you sure?

Mindy:
Well, if you’re worried, there’s nothing a little tender loving care won’t cure.

Phillip:
Yeah, I’ll bet.

(Mindy puts out an arm and Phillip leans over, kissing her. Pulling away, Mindy peeks her head out at Beth, who’s watching, astonished).

Mindy:
Beth? It’s Beth, right?

(Beth nods. Phillip moans).

Mindy:
We’d like to be alone for a minute. (Phillip stands up, embarrassed). Would you mind?

Phillip: (Under his breath, discouraging Mindy)
Would you, um. (He coughs).

Beth:
No.

(Weak and wobbly, Beth tries to get out of bed).

Mindy:
Thanks.

Phillip: (Blushing and uncomfortably to Mindy)
Cute. (He turns to Beth) Hi. How are you doing?

Beth: (Shyly as she walks by him)
Excuse me.

(She faints into Phillip’s arms).

Phillip:
Whoa!

(He lays her on Mindy’s bed).

(The Nurses’ Station later that afternoon. Lillian and Hillary are working when Leslie Ann arrives.)

Leslie Ann:
Okay, who wants the next break?

Hillary:
That depends. What dietary delight has the cafeteria whipped up today?

Leslie Ann:
Fish cakes and spaghetti.

Hillary:
I pass.

Leslie Ann:
Well, actually, the Chef’s Salad’s okay. The lettuce is pretty fresh. Oh, hey, there’s a light on. Lillian, isn’t that your daughter’s room?

Lillian: (Looking)
Yes.

Hillary:
Ten to one it’s her roommate.

Leslie Ann: (Groans)
Oh yeah. Mindy Lewis.

Hillary:
I swear that kid thinks this is a four star hotel and we’re room service.

Lillian:
I’ll see what she wants, just as soon as I finish this supply chart.

Hillary:
Oh, why don’t you take your break now, Lillian.

Lillian:
Okay. That’ll give me a chance to spend a little time with Beth.
