1984: A Painful Break-Up Beth was preparing to go to the hospital (where Phillip was recuperating after being beaten up by the Galahads--not Lujack, who was at the beach with Beth) to tell him that she was in love with Lujack. Phillip couldn't wait for her arrival, so he had Mindy (who had seen Lujack & Beth kissing at Company the day before) assist him in getting over to Beth's. His shirt is unbuttoned, showing his bandaged ribs. Phillip & Mindy have just walked into Beth's doorway to find her with Lujack. They are sitting on the floor, kissing passionately. Phillip: Beth! [Beth & Lujack spring apart and to their feet.] -[commercial]- [Beth and Lujack are trying to explain.] Beth: We didn't mean... Phillip: You didn't mean what? Lujack: [puts his arm protectively around Beth] Easy man. Phillip: Lujack, you get your hands off her. Beth: Just calm down. Phillip: [shouts] You shut your mouth you little punk, or I'll shut it for you! You hear me! [He grimaces in pain and holds his ribs.] Beth: [approaches and puts her hands on Phillip's arms] Phillip, you shouldn't be here. Phillip: [pulls away from her] Get your hands off of me. Mindy: Leave him alone. Well, I hope you're happy. Phillip: Stay out of this, Mindy. Mindy: You should be ashamed of yourselves--both of you. Beth: Mindy, I'd like to speak to Phillip alone. Lujack: I'm not leaving you alone with him, Beth. Beth: I'll be all right. Mindy: Yeah, you'll be fine. Beth: This is none of your business, Mindy. Mindy: Phillip's my friend & he needs me now. Phillip: Just go, Mindy. Mindy: I'm trying to help-- Phillip: Just leave us alone, Mindy, please. [Mindy leaves.] Lujack: [stops at the door on his way out to look at Beth] I'll be around. [Phillip slams the door.] Beth: Are you all right? Phillip: Yeah, boy, I'll tell you, I'm just great, Beth. Beth: I'm gonna call a doctor. Phillip: No! Just leave it alone. Tell me what's going on. Beth: I understand your anger. Phillip: I don't want your understanding Beth, I want for you to tell me what's going on here. Beth: I never meant to hurt you. Phillip: [pause] What has he done to you? Beth: He hasn't done anything. Phillip: Well, then, how could you do that? How could you just lay around on the floor with him like that and let him kiss you? How can you even let him touch you, Beth? You're supposed to love me, remember? Beth: Don't do this, Phillip. Phillip: I thought I knew you, Beth. How could you fall for Lujack's line? Beth: I didn't. Phillip: What kind of a girl are you? Beth: Stop it! Phillip: What's the matter? Couldn't you wait for me? Beth: You're making it sound dirty! Phillip: Well, it looked pretty damn dirty, Beth! Worse than dirty! Beth: [growing angry] There are things that you don't understand. Phillip: No, there are things YOU don't understand, Beth. Damnit, you're MY girl. [Pause] Forget it--it's done. [Pause] This is gonna take a long time to go away, Beth. I swear to you--if I ever catch you with Lujack again, I'm gonna kill him, and I mean it. Now, let's just get your stuff packed and get you out of here. Beth: [forceful] No. Phillip: You're not staying here. Beth: You're not listening to me. Phillip: You just tell me where your suitcase is. Beth: Phillip! Phillip: We'll talk about it later. Beth: No! You don't understand! There is no 'later'. I care for Lujack. Phillip: You what? Beth: I love him, Phillip. Phillip: This is a really bad joke, Beth. Beth: I love him. Phillip: Shut up. Beth: Listen to me-- Phillip: [yelling] Shut up! You hear me? Beth: [yelling] It just happened! Phillip: Just shut your mouth! Beth: It just happened! Phillip, when we fell in love, I was a little girl! But I had to grow up. Lujack was my friend, and that friendship grew-- Phillip: SHUT UP! [He angrily swipes at her dresser, knocking a bunch of stuff onto the floor.] Beth: Oh great! Do it some more! Go ahead! I've lived with violence all my life, and I'm not scared of it anymore! [Phillip breaks down and walks across the room to her sun porch.] -[edit]- starts to get choppy here... Phillip: Beth, I put you so high. I put you on a pedestal. I never wanted to do anything but to love you and take care of you for the rest of my life. How could you even think about Lujack? Beth: [crying softly] Things changed. -[edit]- [Beth is crying with her back to Phillip.] Phillip: [walks up behind her.] Well, I was there then, and I'm there now. We can stil make it work. [He reaches to touch her shoulder and she pulls away.] Beth: No--don't. Phillip: Oh, that's great. You can roll around on the floor with Lujack, and I can't even touch you, is that right? Beth: You talk about our love like it was some dream! Phillip: It was a dream. Beth: Dreams aren't real, Phillip. I've learned that. Phillip: We can make 'em real. You know we can make it real. Beth: [crying] You want me to remember--what about you? You LEFT me. Don't you remember that? You slept with Mindy, and you got her pregnant and had to marry her. That was no dream. That was real. I know it because I felt it here. [She holds her hand over her heart.] Phillip: You know that I did just what I had to do. Beth: But did you think that you could walk back into my life when you felt like it? Did you think that things were gonna be exactly the same? Phillip: I thought that you understood, Beth. We were a part of each other. Beth: Oh, grow up, Phillip! [Phillip's eyes widen in shock. Great reaction by Grant on this line--he nailed it.] I'm not something that you make up in your mind to write some poem about. I'm REAL. I breathe, I cry, I hurt. What did you expect me to do when you left? I have a life, and that life has to go on. Phillip: You knew how much I loved you. You KNEW that I would never stop loving you. Beth: Was I supposed to just stand around and wait? Our love was a dream. But dreams aren't real--I can't live on that. Phillip: There was nothing else that I could do, Beth. Beth: I thought I would die. Phillip: Beth-- Beth: But I didn't. I got through it, and I found someone else. -[edit]- Beth: [picks up mid-sentence] ...[I am] flesh & blood. I don't want your pedestal. I want you to see me for who I really am, and I want you to see that it's over. -[edit]- Phillip: You look right at me and you tell me that it's over and that's what you want. Beth: [steadily] It's over Phillip. Phillip: I don't...I don't believe you. -[edit]- Phillip: [storming to the door] I don't want to hear it now, and I don't want to hear it ever! [He leaves and slams the door behind him.] NEW SCENE: Lujack: [returns to find Beth crying on the sun porch.] I'm free. I'm all yours--if you still want me. Beth: It's over, Lujack. [She falls into his arms] Lujack: [holds her tightly] No, it's just starting, sweetheart. Me & you. Me & you--forever.
