[Lillian is buying a beautiful bouquet of white and pink roses at the hospital gift shop.]
Lillian: (to the clerk)
Thank you. They’re lovely.
[She turns around and runs into Phillip, who grabs her by the arm.]
Lillian:
Oh, Phillip.
[He stares at the flowers, than looks up at her.]
-[COMMERCIAL]-
Lillian:
I knew I’d see you today. I knew you wouldn’t have forgotten.
Phillip:
I thought I’d come by and see how you were doing.
Lillian: (about the flowers)
I was going to bring these to put by her grave. Remember, she always loved flowers.
Phillip: (nodding)
She sure did. Those are very pretty.
Lillian:
Hard to let go, isn’t it?
Phillip:
Mm…yep. Sure is. This Christmas I tried very hard…to make peace, but, uh, some days it’s particularly hard to forget.
Lillian:
Yes. Especially a day like today.
Phillip:
Two years. (Shakes his head). It seems…like so much longer to me.
Lillian:
Funny. It’s just the opposite with me. It seems like, like just yesterday that we…uh…lost her. (Pause as Lillian collects herself. She tries to brighten the subject). I miss you, you know. I miss seeing you and hearing what you’re up to and, um…how’s Chelsea? What’s happening in your life?
Phillip: (sheepish)
Uh, no Chelsea. That didn’t…that didn’t work out. (He shrugs). No big deal.
Lillian:
Hey, I know it’s hard. You’ve got to keep on looking.
Phillip:
I keep trying. I keep telling myself that, but…after Beth, it seems a little pointless…sometimes.
Lillian:
She was so special, wasn’t she?
Phillip:
Mm-hmm…
Lillian:
I don’t know why I say she “was” special. She still is special. She’s still here, you know, in all those little things.
Phillip: (head down)
Not the same.
Lillian:
No, it’s not. (Touching his chin) I wish you didn’t miss her so much.
Phillip: (sheepishly grins)
She’s the best thing that ever happened to me.
Lillian: (nods)
She’s still with you, you know. Deep inside you, where it really counts, she’s still there. All you have to do is go inside and you’ll find her. Just search that soul of yours.
Phillip:
I’ll try.
Lillian: (talking about visiting the grave)
Will you come with me?
Phillip:
Already been.
Lillian:
Oh, Phillip…
[She gives him a hug.]
