January 1991: Countdown to the Wedding

(Samantha’s apartment. Beth is rocking Lizzie in the corner. Phillip, carrying two sodas, sits down on the couch next to Sam’s wheelchair, but can’t take his eyes off “his” girls).

Phillip: (Refering to Beth and Lizzie)
Is that a picture?

Sam:
I wish I could paint.

Phillip:
Oh, your brother is a lucky man, Sammy.

Sam:
You remember that time you came to see me in Arizona?

Phillip:
Mm-hmm.

Sam:
We went out riding at sunset and you told me all about Beth? (He nods). I’ll never forget it. The sun was sinking into the hills, and there was this gold light. It was so romantic!

(She stares off and smiles into a romantic smile. Phillip looks at her, and a sarcastic smirk appears on his face.)

Phillip:
You and me in the sunset? That was romantic?

Sam:
No, idiot. You and Beth.

Phillip: (laughing)
I know. I’m kidding you.

Sam:
You told me how beautiful she was. How much you loved her.

Phillip:
Yeah.

Sam:
It was the most romantic thing I ever heard. Better than any story in any book.

Phillip:
Yeah, well Romeo and Juliet got nothing on us.

Sam:
No comparison.

Phillip: (snaps his fingers three times dismissively)
Tristan and Isolde…

Sam:
Amateurs.

Phillip:
Yeah.

Sam:
You two are the real thing. I thought that you’d get married then and there.

Phillip: (raises his eyebrows)
So did I.

Sam:
Huh.

Phillip:
Funny how those things work out. Well, life is what happens while you’re making your plans, right? Who said that?

Sam:
John Lennon?

Phillip:
Very good.

Sam:
I guess some things are worth waiting for.

Phillip: (nods, then changes gears)
Yep. Did you schedule your surgery yet?

Sam:
They have to run a lot of tests first, so it could be weeks. And then months of therapy, learning to walk again.

Phillip:
You can do it.

Sam: (Sighs)
I’m talking like it’s going to happen.

Phillip:
It IS going to happen, Sammy. You’re going to make it happen.

Sam:
Right.

Phillip: (insistent)
Yes. Hey—don’t patronize me. Remember that night when I came to see you, before I left? Do you remember?

Sam:
When you came to say goodbye only I didn’t know it was goodbye?

Phillip:
Right. Remember I told you that night that you were my hero?

(Voices get loud here)

Sam:
Stop!

Phillip:
I meant it…no!

Sam:
Would you stop?

Phillip:
You always do this. Every time I try to say something nice to you.

Sam:
YOU always do this.

(Beth comes over)

Beth:
Wait, Phillip, ssh…

Phillip: (turns as Beth sits next to him on the couch)
Is she sleeping?

Beth: (whispers)
I’m trying. I’m trying.

Sam:
Okay.

Phillip:
Sorry.

Beth:
So, did you ask Sam?

Phillip:
Oh, no, I haven’t. Did you want to do it?

Beth:
No, you. You.

Sam:
Ask me what?

(Phillip looks at Beth)

Sam:
Ask me…?

Phillip:
I’ll ask. How would you like to be our maid of honor?

(Sam moves across the room).

Phillip:
Well, Sammy, what do you say?

Sam:
I’m speechless.

Beth:
Sam, we really want you us there with us when we take our vows.

Sam:
I want to be there. I just don’t know when my surgery’s going to be.

Phillip:
Well, that’s okay. That’s doesn’t make any difference. Because if you want to do it, we can work it out either way.

Sam:
I don’t know what to say.

Phillip:
Yes you do. You know. (He moves over and kneels in front of her wheelchair). You say yes. Come on.

Beth:
Phillip, there’s just one thing.

Phillip:
What?

Beth:
The community service project. I don’t know how long we can put that off.

Phillip: (dismissively waves his hand)
No, that’s all right. We can work that out. That’s all right. Sammy, come on. I want you up there with me when I get married.

Sam:
I want to be there.

Phillip:
Well? Then it’s settled?

Beth:
Phillip?

Phillip: (Annoyed)
What?

Beth:
Don’t push.

Phillip: (Exasperated)
I’m not pushing, I’m just…

Sam:
If I thought it was possible…

Phillip:
It IS possible. Sammy, come on. The sky’s the limit.

Sam: (pauses and smiles)
Okay. Yes.

(Beth gives a happy scream. Both she and Phillip jump up and hug Sam).

Phillip:
That’s my…(He gives Sam a kiss on the forehead). That’s my girl. (He pulls away and looks at Beth). I’m not pushy.

(All laughing, they fall back together into a hug).

(Phillip and Beth go into the attic to find a trunk Alexandra said they can use to bring their stuff to Arizona)

Beth:
We have to start getting things together. I think this is great, don’t you? This is a really good sign, don’t you think? We got the place we wanted to go…(Phillip flips the upright trunk to lay down. Beth gets a look at the size of it—its huge). Phillip, you think this is a such good idea?

Phillip:
Are you willing to lug this up the mountain? (He drags it to the middle of the room).

Beth:
Yeah, that’s exactly what I mean.

Phillip:
I don’t know. We’ll see. It IS big. (Examining the trunk) I think we could get all Lizzie’s stuff in here.

Beth:
You’re kidding right? This can hold an entire household. (She sits down on top of the trunk). Just what do you think Lizzie needs?

Phillip:
She’s going to need everything, Beth. You know, Aunt Alex may be right. We may not have running water. Who knows.

Beth: (As Phillip sits next to her)
Well, you know, babies have gotten along for centuries without running water.

Phillip: (Looking down and being oddly quiet)
Not my baby.

Beth: (Playfully hitting him)
Come on. What’s going on with you? (Pause—Phil starts to say something). What?

Phillip:
Um…I’m having some second thoughts. (Beth looks shocked). I really am. I …maybe you should stay here.

Beth:
WHAT?

Phillip:
Well, think about it. You know, the judge said I had to leave Springfield, but she didn’t say anything about you. You know, maybe this isn’t the right thing to do. Maybe you should stay here with Lizzie.

Beth:
Over my dead body! (Standing up). I can’t believe you would suggest this!

Phillip: (Standing up)
Think about Lizzie.

Beth:
I am!

Phillip:
Think about the way it would be for you two, okay?

Beth:
I am.

Phillip:
You saw the pictures. You know how we would be living. And you want to do that?

Beth:
Yes.

Phillip:
You’re sure?

Beth:
The truth?

Phillip:
Please.

Beth:
Phillip, I cannot wait to leave here. I cannot wait. Do you know what we are finally going to have? A simple life. (Phillip groans). Hey—I know that there may be a lot of hard work.

Phillip:
Yeah.

Beth:
But I don’t think it’ll be anything compared to what we have been through. We’re going to be in a clean place, with nature all around us. With people that need us. This is going to be the best time of our lives, and I can’t wait.

Phillip: (giving that oh-so-Phillip admiration look, breaking into a smile)
Neither can I.

(They laugh and embrace).
