February 14, 1991: Wedding Night

(Phillip, with Beth in his arms, opens the door to the honeymoon suite at the Springfield Inn and walks in. The room features a four poster bed and a roaring fire.)

Phillip:
Welcome to your honeymoon, Mrs. Spaulding.

Beth: (Smiles)
Mr. Spaulding.

(Phillip puts Beth down and goes to close the door. Beth walks further into the room).

Phillip:
You surprised?

Beth:
It’s very romantic.

Phillip:
I love this place. Ye Olde Springfield Inn. And it was the best I could do. (Shrugging his shoulders). We can pretend it’s Paris.

Beth: (Walking over to him)
Hey, I don’t want to pretend it’s any place. (Grabbing one of the bed posts). I can’t imagine being happier than I am right now. With you.

Phillip: (Shaking his head in disbelief)
We’re married.

Beth: (Smiles)
He’s slow, folks. But he’s cute.

Phillip: (Walking over to a chair and sitting down)
I just can’t believe it. I just…most of my adult life I have wanted to be married to Beth Raines. (Beth sits on his lap). I have run this day over and over in my mind a million times. I just can’t believe it.

Beth:
Is it kind of a let down?

Phillip:
Oh yeah.

(They both laugh. Phillip pulls her in closer).

Phillip:
Are you a little let down? (Sarcastic) You must be, after all those years of chasing me around. It’s got to be a let down for you.

Beth: (Fake appalled)
I chased YOU??

(They both laugh again, and then kiss).

Phillip:
It just won’t sink in. It just won’t…When I said those words to you today…

Beth:
You…

Together:
Phillip…

Phillip:
Take you, Beth to be my wife.

Beth: (At the same time as Phillip’s “my wife”)
My husband.

(They start to kiss again, and Beth pulls away in a bit of a panic).

Beth:
Did you…did you give Mama the number, just in case…

Phillip: (Smiling, almost a whisper)
Yes. (Beth smiles). But nobody else knows where we are. (He stands up, carrying her). Yep. (Walks over to the bed). I had to share you with all my friends and family all day. (He plops her on the bed. Beth giggles. Phillip walks over to the door and pulls off the “Do Not Disturb” sign from the inside doorknob). But tonight… (He opens the door, puts the sign on the outside knob) You’re mine.

(He takes off his suit coat and throws it on the floor. Beth laughs and moves farther back on the bed.).

Beth: (Laying down)
I’m yours.

Phillip: (Straddling her)
So, what do you want to do? You want to play a little checkers by the fire?

Beth: (Using his tie to pull him close to her)
I think…I think it’ll come to you.

Phillip: (Laughing, and kissing her)
You think?

(As the camera pans away, we see an envelope being slid underneath the door to their room).

(Later, they are in bed and Phillip is feeding Beth strawberries & cream.)

Beth:
So, this is what it’s like being married to you.

Phillip:
How am I doing?

Beth:
Ask me in about 50 years or so.

Phillip: (laughs)
Ain’t life grand? (They kiss.)

Beth:
It’s perfect.

(She pulls him closer and they continue kissing until the strawberry bowl tips over. Phillip moves it to the nightstand and notices the envelope by the door.)

Phillip:
Hold on. (He crosses to get it.) When did this come?

Beth:
I don’t know—what is it?

Phillip: (examining it)
This is Alan’s handwriting. (He opens it and walks back over the bed.) Airline tickets.

Beth:
He must know we can’t use them.

Phillip:
One-way airline tickets.

Beth:
Where to?

Phillip:
Here. (He opens the letter and reads aloud.) “Hope you enjoyed by little joke earlier, but this is my real present. We’ll all be back, won’t we son? Love, Alan.”

(They look at each other—shocked. Phillip shakes his head in disbelief.)

(The next morning—Beth kisses Phillip awake.)

Phillip:
Good morning, Mrs. Spaulding.

Beth:
I like the sound of that--say it again.

Phillip: (he pulls her close)
Good Morning.

Beth:
Not that—the other part!

Phillip:
Mrs. Spaulding? You like that?

Beth:
I’m so glad I married a quick study.

Phillip:
Better get used to it, baby. You’re stuck.

Beth:
Oh, I plan to—believe me. (They kiss and then Beth rests her head on his chest.) It was perfect, wasn’t it?

Phillip:
Last night?

Beth:
Last night and our wedding.

Phillip: (stroking her hair)
It was like a beautiful dream. But it’s not—it’s finally real. We’re married. (He waves his hand showing off his wedding ring.)

Beth:
I think we’re the luckiest people on Earth.

Phillip:
Yeah. (He gets quiet.)

Beth:
Sam?

(Phillip nods.)

(Beth is sitting on the edge of the bed talking on the phone while she brushes her hair. Phillip joins her as she hangs up.)

Phillip:
Lizzie okay? (He reaches for the phone and begins to dial.)

Beth:
Lizzie is fine. Vera’s kitchen is another matter.

Phillip:
Oh boy. (Into the phone) May I speak to Lillian Raines please? Can you tell her it’s her son-in-law? (He smiles at Beth.) Hi Mom. (Laughs) We’re fine. Yes, we slept very well, thank you.

Beth: (leans over to kiss him and whispers)
For about five minutes.

Phillip: (to Lillian)
So Lizzie’s okay? … Good. Yeah, Beth called over to Aunt Alex’s. Um, listen, I’m really calling to find out about Sam—is there any word yet? … Well, I thought she was scheduled for first thing this morning? … Is that it? They’re just running late? … Okay, would you mind giving us a call here as soon as you know anything? … Yeah, we’ll be at the same number. … Okay Lillian, thanks a lot. And thanks again for last night. Okay, bye. (He hangs up and looks at Beth.) They haven’t gotten started yet—they’re running late.

Beth:
Do you want to have breakfast before it gets cold?

Phillip:
Yeah. Hey—last room service we’re gonna get for a while. We better enjoy it.

(They walk over to the table and he holds out her chair.)

Phillip:
Madam. (She sits.) Coffee?

Beth:
Please. (He pours her a cup.) So, what should we do?

Phillip:
Well, I meant what I said to Ross. I’m not gonna go anywhere till I know that Sammy’s okay.

Beth:
Well, what about Judge Collier?

Phillip:
I don’t care. (He sits.) I don’t see what possible difference it can make if we start our community service one day later.

Beth:
I just hope she sees it that way.

Phillip:
She’s probably not ever gonna know. Ross said he would try to cover for us, so I’m not gonna worry about it.

Beth:
Well, that’s good. And what would you like to do while we wait for word about Sam?

Phillip:
I don’t know. We could, uh…I don’t know. What do married people do?

Beth:
We could read the newspaper.

Phillip:
Yeah, that’s pretty Ward Cleaver. I can read the sports section and you can nag me to stop. You can go through the circulars and show me all the things I haven’t bought you. (Beth puts her head down—she’s not listening anymore.) Or you can ignore me completely. I guess then we’d really be married. Honey?

Beth: (looks up)
Yeah, I just hope Sam’s gonna be fine.

Phillip:
Sammy’s gonna be fine. One way or the other, she’ll be okay. Now, let’s cheer up here. This is our honeymoon. It’s a heck of a honeymoon—let’s try and enjoy it. Okay?

Beth:
Are you sure we shouldn’t just go, you know?

Phillip:
The hospital wouldn’t let us see her until a longtime afterwards anyway. And there’s nothing that we can do.

Beth:
Right. Look, Phillip, maybe we could just go anyhow.

Phillip: (stands up)
I was hoping you would say that. I love you, you know that? (He kisses her and hugs her tightly.) Now I know why I married you. (Beth heads to the dresser to go change clothes.) I can be ready in about ten minutes.
