Nicky Butt

Wes Brown

Position: Midfield

Squad Number: 8

Born:Manchester 21 Jan 1975

Height: 5 foot 10

Previous Clubs: Signed from trainee

Notes: The able lieutenant to Roy Keane in the Reds' midfield. Butt is another player who rarely receives the headlines he deserves, but his committed displays make him a big favourite with the United fans. The Mancunian fulfilled a boyhood dream by making the grade at the club. Like Keane, Butt is a player who possesses immense stamina and is a key component in the United engine room. He is also a fierce tackler and his sound footballing brain, as highlighted during United's European Cup Final defeat of Bayern Munich, makes him well aware of his role in the team. After signing a new seven-year contract, Nicky endured a woeful start to the 98-99 season with illness, injury and suspension interrupting his attempts to get into the England side. The tenacious midfielder remains of key figure for the future and, with further England recognition, Butt looks destined to make a permanent name for himself on the international stage. Butt admittedly "stood still" during 1999/2000 through injuries and suspensions yet still made a significant contribution to the club's six title success in eight seasons.
