His versatility is a huge asset to Alex Ferguson, because Irwin can operate equally well on either side of defence in the full back slots. Apart from his defensive qualities, Irwin, bought for a bargain £625,000 in the summer of '90, is also one of the finest full-backs in the game and at one time was rated by many to be the best crosser of the ball in the country. Continues to be a regular in the Republic Of Ireland international side.
