Hi Hope Islanders!
Episode 1 Look One Way and Row Another
On the HOPE ISLAND forum, and on chats (Thursday 9:00 PM eastern
and Sunday 8:00 PM eastern), there has been a discussion recently
about the great episode scripts, with series clips as illustrations,
that Timothy and Julian are doing to be put on the web at this site:
https://www.angelfire.com/tv2/hopeislandcampaign/EpisodeGuide.html
This is a lot of work by two very dedicated fans for the benefit
of all of us. Pass the word along to friends who used to enjoy H I
but gave up on it when pax network quit the series. It will bring
back fond memories to everyone when reading these excellent scripts!
For a first discussion, and thinking about the first episode,
these are a few things that stand out:
1 - The way Daniel looked up at heaven when he was asking for
help with something, or felt things were giving him a hard time.
Hey, we all should do that -- maybe it would help us, too!
2 - Nub is a riot! Everyone has a lovable, but sometimes
bumbling, friend like him. All small towns have at least one, and
cities must have many who get lost in the shuffle. Fun stories can
be told about people of his sort who brighten the lives of others.
Of whom does he remind people?
3 - Mother and daughter relationships -- Ruby and Bonita did a
great job on that!
4 - Two men of the Holyman population (as Alex put it) from
different churches sparring back and forth but having basic
agreement on the important things of life for the Island.
5 - Dylan being "the leaven in the lump" to spark all sorts of
things and keep the adults hopping.
6 - Two serious issues: Alzheimer's disease; and Daniel's
minister father figuring the Island was a hopeless cause so he
shipped his son off to start a ministry there, never realizing what
a great opportunity it was and how warmly Daniel would be accepted
and valued for all he accomplished in such a short time.
What stands out about these parts, or other parts, of a very
strong opening episode for a series? So many paths to explore, and
presented so well to begin with. What little fun things are noticed
that the writers slipped by our eyes? (Such as the Island population
number on the water tank Welcome sign.) Not to mention the problem
of entrepreneur Brian Brewster...
All of which brings up the fact that this great series was based
on the Irish series Ballykissangel. How many people are familiar
with it? Pick out the matching characters and events! That will
begin discussion #2 if there is response to this trial discussion.
Eleven characters began the series as the main cast during the first
episode; plus guest stars. What made each one uniquely important to
the Island?
If you'd like to be in a discussion about our series, feel free
to send email with thoughts and questions about the series to this
screen address. All questions and their answers will be emailed back
to everyone, senders' names omitted, every week or so. Also send
screen names of anyone who might like to be added to this list of 12
who have posted on the forum or joined the chats recently.
