The latest on proposed UPN station KWWF is that the Waterloo based station will be on the air by November.  Owner Bill Smith is in negotiations with KWWL about using the KWWL tower.  The station must be on the air by November 29 as the construction permit expires on that date.

KWWL-TV Waterloo has hired a new News Director.  John Shelby comes from KEPR in Pasco, WA and has worked for stations in St. Louis and Chicago.  He will begin his duties March 1.

KWWL-TV Waterloo announced its plans for High Definition TV. The station will test it's HDTV signal during the Winter Olympics with full time HDTV programming beginning May 1.

The Waterloo Courier reports that KWWL Waterloo's News Director Mike Beecher resigned on January 18 after a little more than a year on the job.

WOI-TV Des Moines plans to add a 6 pm newscast in the near future while the newscast get a new look.  Stephanie Heft has left as morning and midday anchor.  Apparently she declined a contract offer and wanted to do something else.

A Des Moines TV news reporter has been fired for playing a prank in the newsroom involving an anthrax hoax.  Steve Oswalt, who had been with KCCI-TV for 15 years sprinkled face powder in front of a group of co-workers and two days later, he was escorted from the station.  Oswalt was the station's weekend anchor.

Iowa Hawkeye fans in Southeast Iowa will be able to see Iowa basketball on TV after all.  The Burlington Hawk Eye reports that at one point, the longtime rights holder KYOU was forced to drop the games after the Fox network threatened to pull it's affiliation from the Ottumwa based station due to the prime-time pre-emptions for the games.  As a result of a compromise between the two parties, KYOU will show most of the games starting December 1.  KYOU was not allowed to pre-empt Fox programming to air games in the season opening Guardian's Classic.

KGWB/26 (Burlington) has received a construction permit for its digital facility on channel 41.

WB affiliate KGWB/26 (Burlington) has received a construction permit that will allow it to be seen in the Quad Cities. The station would upgrade from 200kW to 2500kW and move its transmitter from Burlington to a site midway between Burlington and Davenport , increasing the population of its coverage area by more than 650%. KGWB is co-owned with FOX affiliate KLJB/18, and a waiver was granted to make the upgrade.

The FCC has granted a construction permit for a new 1kW low-power TV station, K45GV, on channel 45 in Emmettsburg to Dean Mosely.

A 31 year tradition came to an end at the conclusion of the Iowa State High School Wrestling Tournament.  Iowa Public TV broadcast the championship finals for the last time.  The Iowa High School Athletic Association has sold the rights to future championships to commercial television.  Thompson Source Productions will pay an $10,000 annual rights fee to produce and distribute the 2003-2006 championships.  It is IPTV's policy not to pay rights fees for such events.
