Secrets Revealed
"Day of Reckoning", the two-part season ender of X-Men: Evolution that aired this past Saturday contained many surprises and shocks for fans of the series, but none more shocking than the revelation of the characters' mutant powers to the world thanks to the machinations of Magneto.
"Of course, now that the mutant secret is out, the X-Men and Brotherhood will have to deal with public reaction," series producer Boyd Kirkland told X-Fan. "Just as in the real world, not all reactions will be the same. Some will be tolerant and reasonable, while others will be fearful and hateful. Others will just look for ways of exploiting the situation. We intend to play out a lot of this in Bayville High, but there will also be some shows dealing with the broader public and government reactions."
"As you can imagine, the mutants' responses to this public scrutiny will also vary, depending upon who they are and the pressures they are experiencing. Some will grow from it. Others will seek to hide, or even lash out in retaliation, causing more problems."
"Day of Reckoning" also introduced several new characters to the series, including long-time comic book X-Men members Colossus and Gambit, as well as the villainous fire-wielding Pyro. All three appear alongside Sabretooth and Quicksilver as member's of Magneto's new Brotherhood.
"Colossus, Gambit and Pyro will be back, and we will learn more about them," said Kirkland. "Relationships will be explored slowly - there just isn't enough time in these short episodes to move too fast with a lot of this stuff, and we also have a lot of characters to feature!"
The season ender also introduced the threat of the giant robotic mutant-hunting Sentinels, and their creator, Bolivar Trask.
"The Sentinels will be back at some point, but probably not next season," said Kirkland. "Other mutants (both good and bad) will be introduced. As indicated in season 2, the threat of Apocalypse will continue to loom and draw nearer."
"The first two or three episodes will mostly be about tying up loose ends and answering questions and issues raised by our season 2 finale. Beyond that, as in the past, we will have stories that focus on our core characters, and their still evolving powers, relationships, etc. Mystique will continue to bedevil and surprise. Some of the stories will be fun and light-hearted. Others will be more serious drama. Mixing it up keeps the series and its characters entertaining and interesting."
"In short, season 3 will be more of the great stuff you've come to expect from X-Men: Evolution!"
