This is a video diary of how a pair of kittens came to live with us. I named them Sebastian and Oreo.
Background: On August 8, 2008 the fellow who maintains our lawn and yards told me that he found three small baby kittens in a pot in our side yard. "They look like they're only a week old," he said. I ran outside and sure enough there they were. The mother who is a calico was with them. She hissed when she saw me and took off running. When I saw those poor little kittens living in such squalor (a pot of soil that had dead leaves and ants in it), I cleaned out the doghouse, placed a laundry basket in it and lined it with some clean old towels and an old pillowcase. I moved the baby kittens into their new home. Their mother returned and joined her babies to nurse them.
August 25, 2008 - 6:30 p.m. New development. I spent the day at my mom-in-law's to take care of her for the day. When my husband and I returned home I went to the back patio to check on the kittens. I got there just in time to see Mama Cat carrying little Tabitha (the female kitten) away to the neighbor's. I couldn't stop her in time. They both were gone. I was planning to get the kittens spayed/neutered when they were old enough. Now maybe Tabitha will get pregnant when she's only 4 or 5 months old! I brought the other two kittens inside and set them inside the kitten playpen, gave them a bowl of water and a dish of Kitten Chow which they nibbled on as soon as they saw it. Sebastian and Oreo will stay with me, at least until I get them neutered. And they'll need their shots (rabies, etc.). I was sad to see Tabitha taken away. Well, at least she had one treatment for fleas, but I won't be able to give her the next treatment of Advantage to protect her from fleas. Maybe by some miracle she'll be back, but I doubt it.
September 2, 2008 - Sebastian and Oreo had their first checkup with the vet. The vet paid a housecall. I collected stool samples from the kitty litter tray and gave them to the doctor. He'll call me later to find out why the kittens' stools have been runny and prescribe medication for it. Meanwhile he examined both kittens. Oreo is fine. But Sebastian has ear mites and his right eye has conjunctivitis. The doctor treated Sebastian for the ear mites. Then he gave me a tube of ointment to apply twice daily for one week to Sebastian's right eye. Poor little kitty.
September 4, 2008 - I replaced the kitty litter tray that was on loan from our friend Dan with a brand new regular size Omega Paw Self-Cleaning Litter Box. It was fairly simple to assemble. Within a couple of minutes after I placed it inside the kitten playpen, both Sebastian and Oreo were curious about it and set about to investigate this strange new object.
