DISCLAIMER: I do not own UFO. If I did, I'd be banging Paul Foster right now.

Colonel Paul Foster sat at the Communications Control Center of Moonbase. Commander Ed Straker carried a cup of coffee as he entered the room. He looked at Paul. Then he turned to the two female Moonbase operatives and said, "Why don't you girls go and grab a cup of coffee?"

The girls got up and left the room leaving Ed alone with Paul.

"We need to talk," said Ed setting down his cup of coffee on top of a console.

"I was just about to say the same thing," said Paul.

"Paul, this obsession you have about me has to stop," said Ed. "And it has to stop now."

Paul stared at Ed.

"Why? You haven't even given us a chance," said Paul. "We could be so great together, Ed! I know we could! Let me prove it to you!"

"No, Paul. I'm your commanding officer. It just wouldn't be right. Get over it. Move on with your life."

"You're not being fair!"

"When has life ever been fair? Grow up, Foster!"

Paul felt angry and helpless at not being able to get the reaction he so much desired from Ed.

"Don't tell me to grow up! And don't talk down to me like that!"

The angry young colonel then pressed a button on the console that caused the doorway to shut.

Ed did not know what Paul had in mind with the two of them alone in the sealed room, but he knew he had to take command of the situation.

"Open it!" Ed said sharply to Paul.

But Paul refused and without a word he quickly moved to block Ed from reaching the button.

Commander Straker turned to use a button at a different console that would open the doorway, but Paul quickly grabbed the cup of coffee that Ed had set down. He dumped the hot liquid on the conole. Sparks flew and the lights in the room dimmed.

"It's no use, Commander," said Paul in a calm voice that made Ed feel uneasy. "The doorway's sealed. We won't be disturbed."

Ed slowly turned to look at Paul. The young colonel was unzipping the front of his silver Moonbase uniform. Paul's hairy strong chest peeked out from the narrow opening. Then Ed saw Paul pull out the gun and point it at him.

"Now strip!" said Paul. "I want you out of those clothes and down on your hands and knees!"

Ed stared at Paul. His mind raced to come up with a solution. He slowly moved over to a console.

"Colonel, why don't you just think about this?"

"Think about it? I've thought about this over and over for a very long time! Damn it, I'm going to have you! And if not willingly, then I'll have you by force!"

"You're crazy, Foster!" said Ed as he discreetly pressed a button on the side of the console that Paul could not see. That activated the intercom. The Moonbase operatives in another room suddenly could hear everything in the Communications Control Center.

The Moonbase girls and the Space Interceptor pilots got quite an earful as Paul and Ed continued to speak in the sealed Communications Control Center.

Commander Straker rushed at Colonel Foster. Ed struck Paul in the face. They struggled for the gun. It went off. Ed managed to grab the weapon. Paul was on the floor. He could feel some wetness just below the left corner of his mouth. Paul reached up and wiped his face. He looked down and saw a little blood on his hand. He glared at Ed. Then he noticed the small hole up in the wall. Air was escaping.

Ed pointed the gun at Paul, keeping him away.

"Why don't you go ahead and shoot?" asked Paul.

Ed did not reply. He backed away and moved behind a console, but he kept the gun aimed at Paul.

Both men were growing weaker by the second.

"It doesn't matter," said Paul. "You've shot a hole in the sphere. We're running out of air. You'll pass out soon. Then I'll take the gun and kill you."

"Why kill me, Paul? Why?" asked Ed as the room appeared to grow fuzzy.

"Because if I can't have you, then nobody will! It's that simple! And you'll pass out before I do. I'm younger than you. Fitter. Stronger."

Paul moved closer and reached for the gun, but he stopped as Ed strengthened his hold on it and aimed it straighter.

"You're forgetting one thing. Willpower."

But within seconds Ed collapsed on the floor. He tugged on the collar of his turtleneck top in a futile attempt to breathe easier. Paul snatched the gun from Ed, pointed, shot and missed due to impaired vision from lack of air.

This is it, thought Ed, as his life flashed before him. He saw images of Mary and their son John.

"I never want to see you again!" Ed heard Mary say to him as she choked out the words during her cries of anguish.

He heard the gunshot just as he passed out.

Days later back at S.H.A.D.O. Headquarters:

"Sorry I'm late, gentlemen," said Ed as he entered his office where Alec Freeman and Dr. Jackson were waiting for him.

"Foster's finished," said Alec as he handed a report to Ed.

"Finished?" said Ed in confusion. He turned to Dr. Jackson. "But you gave him a clean bill of health!"

Dr. Jackson explained to Ed about the aliens or whoever it was in that UFO that planted a very powerful implant in Paul Foster's mind that could resurface at any time: tomorrow, next week, years from now. Or even today.

"That implant made Paul perform one single act," said Dr. Jackson. "To love you."

Ed stared at Dr. Jackson.

"Love me?"

"Yes. To the point of extreme madness and jealousy. Paul was brainwashed into wanting to possess you completely. When you rejected him, it made him want to kill you so that no one else could ever have you."

Ed pondered the news.

"Well, that leaves me only one thing I have to do."

******

"I can assure you that I'm fine now," insisted Paul. "I just wasn't myself. You know me, Ed, right?"

Ed looked at Paul. The commander considered himself to be a pretty good judge of character.

This is going to be the ultimate test of trust, Ed thought to himself.

"Very well, Paul. You've been given a clean bill of health. Go on home. Report back tomorrow here at S.H.A.D.O. Headquarters."

"Right." Paul glanced at his watch. "Look at the time. I have just enough time to get ready for my date."

"Your date?"

"Yes. I met this beautiful girl last week. Turns out she's free tonight."

Ed breathed a sigh of relief. Now that's more like it, thought Ed. Paul's gone back to being the ladies' man we all know around here.

"See you in the morning then," said Ed.

"Right. Good night."

And Ed would have indeed enjoyed a restful good night's sleep that night if he had not happened to see Paul with his date while driving home that evening.

Ed quickly pulled his car over to the side of the road and stared at the attractive couple. He frowned. Then he got out of his car and followed the two into the restaurant.

Paul and his date had just sat down and were looking at the menus.

Suddenly Ed was there standing by their table.

"Ed? What are you doing here?" asked Paul.

His date stared at Ed with wide eyes and her mouth gaping open.

"Excuse me, Paul," she said nervously. "I have to go powder my nose."

She got up and quickly left the table.

"Wait here, Paul," said Ed. "I'll be right back."

Paul stared in surprise as Ed followed his date. He was even more surprised to see Ed catch up with her and stop her before she could enter the ladies' room. Words were exchanged, but Paul could not hear them. The girl glanced back at Paul and then looked at Ed. She then proceeded to leave the restaurant without looking back at either men.

Paul got up to go after her, but Ed hurried over and stopped him.

"Forget her, Paul," said Ed. "Forget all about her."

"What? Are you insane? What was that all about? How dare you interfere in my personal life! What did you say to her?"

"Just trust me on this, Paul. She's all wrong for you."

"All wrong for me? Tell me something, Ed. Just what is wrong with you tonight?"

"Nothing. Paul, promise me you will have nothing more to do with that girl. Promise me you'll never see her or try to contact her again."

"I'll do no such thing! Get out of my way! I might still be able to catch her!"

Paul broke away from Ed and rushed out of the restaurant. Ed ran after him.

Both men stood outside the restaurant. There was no sign of the girl.

Paul glared at Ed.

"Well, I hope you're satisfied! Want to tell me what the blazes that was all about? It's the least you can do for spoiling my evening!"

Ed looked at Paul. The poor lad looked especially handsome tonight, even while angry.

I'm going to have to take his mind off of that blasted girl, thought Ed.

He decided to do it in the most effective way he knew.

"Very well, Paul. Come home with me and I'll explain my actions to you. I can see why you're confused and unhappy about it."

Soon they arrived at Ed's home. Paul had never been there before. He looked around quietly and admired his surroundings.

"Paul, let me tell you about the time I allowed myself to be interviewed by a reporter," said Ed motioning for Paul to sit down as he handed him a drink.

Paul took the drink, sat down and listened.

Later on the outskirts of town Josephine Fraser was heading away, anywhere to get as far away as possible from Ed Straker.

If she thought running into Ed Straker in that restaurant was a surprise, she would be even more shocked if she could see him and Paul Foster at that very moment.

"Forget all about her," whispered Ed to Paul in the darkness of the bedroom.

"Forget all about whom?" Paul whispered back sleepily.

Ed smiled. He held Paul closely and together they drifted off to sleep, playing back in their minds the new and unexpected turn in their relationship.
