[This story picks up immediately after Bob (not Kate) had walked out the door with Lord Flasheart, and thus out of Edmund's life.]
Edmund, Lady Jane, and Baldrick stared into space, speechless over what all had just happened.
Finally, Edmund spoke up, "Well, this has been one hell of a night! May as well go back to bed. Light the way, Baldrick." Baldrick made no answer, but walked ahead of Edmund and Lady Jane with the taper.
Upon entering Edmund's bedroom, Jane did not remove her nightdress, but sank onto a floor pillow, looking pensive. Edmund had already removed his nightclothes and had climbed into bed, though far too much in turmoil to even think of sleeping.
Finally, Jane looked up at Edmund and said regretfully, "Leave it to ME to show up at such a bad time! I'm so sorry, Edmund! I had no idea he actually meant something to you. I have a hard time telling which ones do and which ones don't. "
Edmund could hear the catch in her voice (as hard as she strove to control it) and could see a tear rolling down her face.
"Jane, I could never hold this against you! I loved him, but I love you, too. I so much look forward to seeing you - when you love me, I truly feel loved. That's why I want you up here with me right now," he patted the mattress, "Just hold me. That's what I need now."
Jane climbed into bed, cradling him and stroking his hair.
"While you were outside talking to Lord Flasheart, being the 'worldly woman' I am, I tried to explain the situation to Bob. That I had no intention of ever coming between the two of you." Changing her tone, Jane playfully poked Edmund in the ribs and demanded, "By the way, Edmund, did you REALLY think I'd believe you were just 'chums'? This is ME you're talking to, remember?" Then her tone turned serious again. "Anyway, Bob told me he'd never share you with anyone, called me a poxy whore, and told me to go find someone else to shag! Normally, I'd get a weeeee bit angry if someone said that to me -"
"Yes, and your anger can be downright dangerous sometimes!" Edmund replied, gaping at her, wide-eyed.
"Then I remembered that there really aren't very many people who believe that you can truly love more than one person at a time - that one never detracts from the other."
"Do you remember when we first met?" Edmund mused.
"Yes, Eddie, I do - I think we were all of fifteen! We'd both been very ill-used by our families, that was one of the things that drew us together. That and our mutual fascination with torture and other very gross, sick things! I was a virgin and was very soon to marry Lord Ware, my first husband. Thanks to you, I wasn't a virgin by the time I married him. We can look at my Isobel and know without a doubt who her father is! Even so, if my Lord Ware ever thought anything amiss, he never said so. He was a good man, he was always good to me..." Jane's thoughts drifted..
"I'd wondered if I'd ever see you again once you married him and moved to the country. That was hard for me." Edmund admitted.
"Then, I was widowed and returned to court as one of Elizabeth's ladies. I couldn't wait to do so, she's such great company - as you well know! I'm honored that she still values my company, as I am honored that you still do." Jane returned to reminiscing, "You and I became re-acquainted when Elizabeth noticed you at court and sent me to 'investigate'. She wanted a full report - to find out if you'd be worth her time. Of course, I KNEW you would be - I could eat you up! Elizabeth trusts my judgment - that's why I still have my head, I guess!"
"Good lord! Seems like only yesterday!" Edmund mused, a silly grin on his face.
"Better now?" Jane queried, tugging at a bit of Edmund's hair.
"Better." Edmund smiled.
