Chapter 1: Flashing Lights
Sheridan rejoiced as the magnitude of the situation began to sink in.
She
had all summer to
cruise the U.S. Her father gave her the keys, and said that anywhere
she
wanted to go she
should go. She knew that, that was his subtle way of helping her to
find
out which college
she wanted to attend.
Her friends Theresa, and Gwen were with her. The top was down, and the
music
was
blaring. They had been on the road for weeks, they were headed to
Georgia.
Gwen loved
baseball, she wanted to see the Atlanta Braves play, so they were
going.
“Here’s to the night we felt alive, here’s to the tears you knew you’d
cry,
here’s to
good-bye...”
The girls were singing along with the radio.
“Oh no!” Sheridan exclaimed when she saw the flashing cop lights. She
pulled
over as the
officer stepped out. He couldn’t have been any older than them. He was
very
handsome
too.
“Excuse me mam, could I see your license and registration please?”
“Yeah sure. It’s in the back seat.” Sheridan said as she reached in the
back
and grabbed
her purse. “Okay, here’s my license. Theresa could you please get my
registration out of
the glove department?” Sheridan noticed the far away look on Theresa
face.
She knew
that the guy was cute, but please don’t drool, after all he is no Brad
Pitt!
“Theresa, hello?
Girl are you there?”
“Huh?” Theresa replied still a little dazed.
“Could you be a doll, and get my registration out of the glove
department?”
“Oh, yeah.”
“So officer, Paul Thomas, how old are you? You look about our age. 18.”
“I’m 19. This is my first year as a cop.” he said as Theresa handed
Sheridan
the
registration.
“So you Alistar Crane’s daughter?” Sheridan wasn’t surprised that he
knew
who she was.
The Cranes were huge.
“Yeah, nice to meet you, I’m Sheridan Crane, of course. This is Theresa
Lopez-Fitzgerald.
And that’s Gwen Hotchkiss.”
“Nice to meet you.” He said handing back her information. Then he
walked
off.
“Yes! He didn’t give me a ticket!” She exclaimed as she began driving.
The
officer was in
front of her.
“Sheridan, you didn’t notice any resemblance to Antonio in that guy?”
Theresa asked. “I
mean I’m Antonio’s sister so of course I noticed it, but you dated
Antonio.”
Antonio had
a twin brother when he was born, Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald. But about a
year
after they were
born Luis was kidnapped, and never heard from again. Through the years
the
Lopez-Fitzgerald’s never gave up hope that he was still out there.
“Now that I think about, he did look a little like Antonio. Do you
think
that he’s your
missing brother?” Sheridan asked dumb founded.
“Yeah, I do. Don’t you think that Paul Thomas is a weird name for
someone
who looks
like my family.”
“Only one way to find out.” Sheridan said as she began flashing her
lights.
She was trying
to get his attention and it worked like a charm.
