Author’s Notes:
I watched the November 10th episode of Passions and was LIVID..I think the writers of Passions should quit their day jobs!! Killing Sheridan was DUMB. Anyway, I started this story at 3:10 pm Friday and sent it to Jen as soon as it was finished. I hope I’m right about the resolution to the story line...If not I will stop watching the show. Sorry for the rant. Enough said.
November 13 - I decided to revise the story by flushing it out in sections which were written in haste. I wrote the first story just to get it out of my system not following the process of planning, editing and revising etc and wasn’t overly pleased with it but it served its purpose. “NO” accomplished a couple of things, it let me rail at the paid writers; let me fix their gross error in judgement; and let me reunite the only two characters on the show worth watching. I strove for a better sense of continuity here. I want to thank the people who sent such kind e-mails about this and my other two stories “Kidnapped” and Kidnapped the Prequel. Sorry for the second rant and I hope you, like me, will find this story a bit more...satisfying.

This yacht was beautiful. A great improvement over Bethesda Naval Hospital Hal Freeman thought as he waited for permission to see the craft’s “special” guest. His FBI Identification had been checked and rechecked at the entrance to the marina and at the booth at the foot of the pier even though he had been here several times since that first, fateful, frantic evening.
***FLASHBACK***
“She’s not responding. How long did you say since she was given the drug?” The Doctor didn’t like the readings. The patient was in a very deep coma. “I have to give her another shot.”
“Doctor, isn’t that dangerous?” Another member of the team inquired. “She’s had two already.”
“This woman may already be DEAD,” he replied taking the syringe and injecting it into the body of a beautiful blond woman. Her eyes opened and she turned her head, “LUIS,” she mumbled and then passed out again.”
“She’ll be all right now...Agent Freeman, that one was too close.”
***END FLASHBACK***
Hal stopped in front the stateroom door and tapped gently. He smiled at the woman, who set her newspaper down beside her. It had been nearly six weeks and Sheridan Crane was beginning to feel like herself again. She’d been very weak and had experienced severe nightmares but was feeling more like herself today.
“You’re looking much better, Sheridan,” Hal had been worried that he might have to call in a psychologist to treat her. Only Hal knew her true identity. The doctor who had brought her back from the dead and his nursing team were the only ones aside from the ship’s captain who knew where the mystery patient had disappeared to the morning after that last minute rescue. The fewer people who knew of her existence the better.
“I see they sent in the big guns, I must have finally made an impression. Hal, I won’t stay here any longer - you told me two weeks, maybe three, well it’s been six. And I won’t let you set me up in some small town somewhere and make me hide forever. I”m going home. We’ve established that this hasn’t worked.” She stood up and placed her hands on her hips. “Place me back in Luis’ custody. I trust Luis implicitly. He’ll take care of me. This is insane, I”M GOING HOME!!!”
“I’m sorry Ms Crane, I cant allow that. You knew this would be difficult.” Hal Freeman tried to reason with her.
“DIFFICULT!!!, Difficult.” Sheridan fumed. “Difficult doesn’t even begin to cover it! First, I watched Ethan give the eulogy at my funeral on National Television! He was completely destroyed by this. I bet he can’t look at Theresa now without thinking about me and that may mean he’ll marry Gwen without knowing for sure how he feels, what he wants. There’s no one else he can talk to about this. No one else who will just listen and be there for him. My nephew is like a brother to me. I can’t watch him like this anymore.” She pointed to the paper and one article in particular. The gossip columnist had started taking bets as to when the Crane Hodgekiss wedding would be back on.
The photograph spoke volumes. Ethan looked cold, hard, calculating. It was taken at the now almost daily Crane family news conference where Ethan announced substantial reward money for leads in her ‘murder. The family had hired its own investigators to pursue the case because of their complete lack of confidence in the FBI and in particular the Harmony Police. She walked to the window. “Then I find out from one of the agents that Pilar took a leave of absence - I doubt Julian or Father will ever let her return to work even if she tried. She’s too proud to just take money from Ivy. The Lopez Fitzgerald family could be out on the street soon. This is insane.”
“Sheridan, I swear I’ll step in before that happens with some kind of solution. You had a will didn’t you.” She nodded in response. “You left a substantial sum of money to Pilar didn’t you.” She looked away.
“You’re right.” Sheridan shook her head sadly. “Pilar’s mortgage was to be paid in full and a trust fund set up for her. Even so, what if my brother tries to block it. The Cranes could tie this up in court for years...”
“You can’t worry about it. You’ll make yourself ill. And I really wish you’d stop interrogating my agents about life in Harmony. Who brought you this anyway.” He held up the edition of the Harmony Herald she had been reading. He’d read it. It was full of Crane family sponsored accusations of police incompetence and the editorials had been devoid of any fair content. The paper perpetually slammed both Sam Bennet and Luis Lopez Fitzgerald’s bungling in preventing her murder and its subsequent investigation.
Sheridan ignored his question. She was furious with him and she was on a roll. “AND LUIS, LUIS was..” She began to sob. “Please Hal, I’ve got to call him. Tell him I’m alive, I’m all right. For Heaven’s Sake Hal, he looked dead in those surveillance photos they brought me.” She broke down. Hal felt his heart break in sympathy. He still wrestled with the image of Luis attempting to revive her lifeless body and begging Eve Russel to do something. Thank God, she’d been unconscious and hadn’t heard him. He felt another pang of guilt. He’d almost gotten used to them.
He hoped when this case was over it would all have been worth it. He wrapped his arms around Sheridan in a friendly embrace. “Sheridan, once you saw for yourself it was Hank Bennet that the cartel got to, you knew this was the only way. You were there, he shot you twice, the second time in the back while you were already wounded after begging him to help you. Yes, he’d contacted the Bureau earlier that night and warned us, but he had no idea you survived. He still doesn’t know..”
She pulled back, drawing on her inner strength to calm down and and nodded in agreement. “I don’t know what was worse that night, hearing him confess or that last phone call from Luis before he found my drugged body. Why did Luis have to be the one... You promised me he’d be with you miles away when he found out..” She began to cry again. “It would have been so much easier on him that way.” She’d convinced an agent to make a copy of the telephone message tape so she could at least hear Luis’ voice saying over and over that they had so much to look forward to. Her heart still tore at his words and every time she heard “Imagine” on the stereo she started to cry all over again. But it did give her hope. She had to hope they’d be together soon. She had to believe. “Oh, Luis,” she picked up a photograph from beside the bed and gently caressed his smiling face.
Back in Harmony Luis felt it again. The whisper of a caress on his cheek. The touch of the woman he’d loved more than anything he’d ever thought possible. He wasn’t afraid of the sensation or even surprised by it anymore. It happened several times a day now. It started the morning after she... He still had trouble thinking the word. He’d never said it out loud. The first time he felt it he’d awoken with a start and bolted up in the chair reaching instinctively out to her. That’s when he realized he was at the station, he’d dozed off at his desk, when he realized she was truly gone. He reached up to touch the cheek, it still tingled slightly. “I love you too Sheridan,” he whispered. He reached into the fridge and grabbed a beer. Sitting down at the kitchen table he took a swig, then hung his face in his hands. “I love you too.”
Back on the yacht Sheridan and Agent Freeman weren’t done yet. She was becoming increasingly distant as the days stretched into weeks. Hal knew that she was in rough shape. It was getting to him too. He tried to cheer her with the latest news from Interpol. He tried to remind her that this was all temporary. At least he hoped it was.
“The agent tailing Hank hasn’t made any progress in France yet. Roger is still wary.. He hasn’t reappeared but did talk briefly to Hank on the phone. They want to hire him as a courier. Hank is pressing for a meeting but doesn’t want to push them too far too fast. They’ve threatened him with retribution against his family in Harmony before. Listen to me Sheridan, I promise you - as soon as Roger is in custody you’ll be on the next flight to Harmony. You can even fly the plane yourself. But, I warned you it could be several days, even weeks before he can lead Interpol to Roger. Until then, no contact, with any one. The world has to believe Sheridan Crane is dead.” Hal’s voice was harsh. He wasn’t angry with her, he knew how she must feel.
“I never should have agreed to this.” Sheridan shook her head sadly turning her back to him.
“It was the only option, and you know that. I should warn you though, this isn’t over for Luis or Sam Bennet.”
“What more can they do to Luis. It’s not like it was him who pulled the trigger!!! He was suspended from the force - that must have killed him. He tried burying himself in the Youth Center then the mayor decides he’s a poor role model, not good enough to work with high risk young people. He lost that too. Then Hank left Harmony saying Luis’ grief made their friendship impossible. He lost his best friend. He doesn’t have anything left. ”
Hal hated to have to tell her. “The Harmony PD will not reinstate him later this week as I had recommended...He’s finished in law enforcement for now. There’s too much Crane pressure..” Hal took a small step back expecting an explosion. He didn’t get one.
“Let me guess, my family won’t even support him as dog catcher right?” Sheridan whispered.
“You know that. You knew it would be like this. My sources at the DA’s office say he may be charged with Criminal Negligence for abandoning his duty that night. We won’t allow those charges to proceed...I promise. Now you have to calm down. The captain says you’re not eating.”
“I’m never hungry. When I look out the cabin, all I can think about is how many time Luis and I went for a stroll on the pier. It’s...” Her voice trailed off. She caught herself again. Hal was amazed at her strength. “Tell me again, it’s temporary? He’ll make detective when this is all over.”
Hal smiled at her and turned her to face him. “Sheridan, I promise you, all of this is temporary. Luis will get the career recognition he deserves and you two can build the life together you always dreamed of. In the meantime, Luis’ grief has to be genuine. The cartel knew you were lovers. If they don’t see his grief...”
“They’ve seen enough already! And God knows I’ve seen more than enough. He’s shutting down emotionally. Don’t you see that. He’s at the breaking point. I can’t bear to watch it”
“Then don’t. Stop driving yourself insane waiting for news from Harmony, let us help you start a life separate from our old one.”
“I CANT - You just don’t see it do you? LUIS was my life. My whole life... Hal, I can’t hold on much longer. Oh, god, I just thought of something, what if the cartel has figured Hank out. What if they knew he was your inside man too. What if they’ve found out that you let him think he’d really killed me to prevent him from actually succeeding at it? What if this never ends?”
“Sheridan calm down.” She was on the verge of hysterics now and he was becoming frightened for her.
She began to crumble. “And what about Hank Bennet. God, Hank must be riddled with guilt.” She began to cry harder. “I wish I was a big enough person to feel sorry for him. I can’t forgive him for what he’s done to me, to US. I hate him for what he’s done and now I hate myself for hating him. I used to think he was my friend.”
“Sheridan don’t do this to yourself.” Hal felt himself weakening again. He’d almost gave into her pleas the last time. He couldn’t blame the other agents for sending for him now. She really was at her wits end. She begged him outright. “ Please, find a way to arrange for Luis to leave Harmony. Bring him here, to me. Hal, I can’t do this any more. I can’t eat, I haven’t slept in weeks. I have to see him..without Luis, I can’t do this anymore. I don’t have the strength anymore. Hal I can barely remember to breathe...”
“Sheridan,” Hal was torn up inside. He had real respect for both these people and for the depth of their feelings for one another. “I can’t. As much as I want to for both your sakes. Luis has to hit rock bottom. Even then, there’s no telling how long the cartel will keep your family and friends under surveillance. Bringing Luis to you is tantamount to signing both your death warrants. Sheridan, I’m sorry - but that’s the way it has to be for now. I’ve hidden witnesses for years for the sake of this case. And one even had a family with young children who had to grow up without him.” Hal caught himself before he slipped again. “Believe me I don’t like to keep lovers apart. If there was some other way. But it’s still early yet, and these things take time. I promise you, I won’t let this drag out any longer than necessary.”
She pulled back from him again and returned to the chair where she had been reading when he arrived. She looked so empty. So alone. He wanted to stay to spend some time with her but he was needed back in Harmony. “ I wish I could stay, but I have to go.”
“Hal, can you bring me something from home. Anything, a pillow from the sofa in the cottage, better still there’s the photograph of my mother from the dresser in my room .”
He turned and shook his head. He hadn’t wanted to tell her this but she would find out eventually. “Ethan ordered the cottage and its contents demolished. There’s nothing left. “ He nodded his farewell and left the stateroom.
She pulled her knees up against her lap and began to rock in the chair. This time the tears wouldn’t stop. And so Sheridan Crane was left alone again in her room. It was a beautiful place, brightly painted walls and furnished with antiques and fresh flowers. Sheridan couldn’t help but think that, as beautiful as the setting was it was just a cage. A gilded cage...she’d lived her whole life in one - until Luis. She hadn’t been allowed to bring any of her own things with her that fateful night. She wanted the compact - Hal had said no. She wanted a single stem from the flowers on the table where she and Luis had shared their romantic dinner. He’d said no to that too. He couldn’t disturb the crime scene. He couldn’t tell her the truth. It would be too painful. He’d tried to bring her both those things but Ethan had shattered the vases and during a fist fight with Luis.
Pilar had asked for the compact - she intended to give it to Luis to help him with his grieving when the time was right. Somehow, he knew Pilar, suspected, despite all the evidence he’d so carefully planted to the contrary, that Sheridan was not really dead. Thank God, she hadn’t voiced her thoughts to anyone.
In Harmony the whole town looked grey. Luis sat at his mother’s kitchen table and took a swig of his beer. He hadn’t moved in two hours, not since the mayor had asked for his keys to the Youth Centre. Miguel stood at the doorway watching his older brother in silence. Luis had always been the strong one in their family. He barely recognized his brother now. He hadn’t shaved in a few days. On some men it looked like they were ruggedly handsome with a few days growth, on Luis, it looked like hell. “I know you’re there Miguel,” Luis said, putting the bottle down. “Relax, little brother, I’m not getting drunk. It’s the same one I started two hours ago.”
“I didn’t think you were...” Miguel was quick to respond to the accusation. He sounded defensive but couldn’t help it. He had begun to wonder if Luis would make it through this.
“Yes you did. In a way, I almost wish I could. Then maybe I’d feel something beside the dull ache, you know. If I hadn’t seen her body myself I wouldn’t have believed it...” Luis slumped in his chair. Miguel crossed the room and sat across from him. “It’s like I can almost feel her still. She was such a presence in my life, I could almost sense her emotions, when she was happy, when she was worried about something, when she was mad at me. She spent a lot of the last year mad at me. I could tell. Now, I feel her still. She’s so sad. So empty. So bleak. Or is that me? Are those my feelings? I don’t want to believe she’s dead. Just like Mama can’t face the truth about Papa. Is it the same thing?”
“Luis, you did everything you could...” Miguel knew Luis was wracked with guilt. He also knew his brother was close to the edge. He’d watched the steady decline, helpless to intervene. Miguel was scared.
“I never should have left her. Hell, I never should have answered the door that night. I never should have agreed to go with Agent Freeman. I never should have fallen in love with her in the first place. No I don’t regret that. I could never regret that. It was incredible. She was so... but...” He slammed his fist on the table and spilled the beer. Miguel rose to clean it up and before he knew what was happening Luis was out the door and running. The snow began to fall and but Luis didn’t even feel the chill or the dampness against his skin. He just ran. His sweat shirt clung to him and he began to break a sweat. Her face appeared in his mind. Hell, it was always there!
Her smile, her laugh, the feel of her in his arms as they danced, the way she looked at him when she’d asked him to make love to her that last night, the frown when they’d been interrupted. ...He collapsed against a tree. He’d come here again. He was in the same grove of trees where they’d met jogging that morning after his mother’s birthday party. He knew now that despite both their protests to the contrary he was in love with her even then. Their first tango had done it. She fit so completely into his arms. They’d danced like each one was an extension of the other’s body. Now he understood. He’d tried to deny it for months but that night she’d become his. And he’d become irrevocably hers. He relived it in his mind. His gut clenched. “I swear to you Sheridan, I’ll get them for this, badge or no badge. Before I die, I’ll get them for this.”
\—\
Sheridan hadn’t moved from her chair but had dozed off. She didn’t hear the gentle tap at the door made by the man carrying her dinner tray. He noticed her asleep and reached for a small throw blanket. “You’ll make him a fine wife, Sheridan dear. I’m proud of you both.” He looked at her tear stained cheeks and finally decided. “This has gone on too long.”
\–-\
Hal Freeman watched the scene from a distance listening to the man’s words with the high tech surveillance equipment. He hesitated, not wanting to intrude on the young man’s grief and desperately wanting to tell him the truth. He watched as Luis stood, wiped the tears from his eyes and walked slowly down the path. Hal’s heart broke for them both. He answered his cell phone and agreed whole heartedly with the caller. “Yes Mark, I agree, we need to change the arrangements for Sheridan and Luis. He won’t survive this much longer either..”
Luis wandered the streets of Harmony, past the pool hall, past the Book Café, all along the docks. He saw her every where he looked. He saw her giving him a pie in the face on Halloween. He saw her playing basketball at the youth centre. He saw her dancing at the Seascape. He remembered holding her in his arms on the rooftop looking down on the fake Martin’s body. He saw them skating on Valentines’ Day. He saw...everything. He couldn’t stop seeing her. He felt her everywhere. Maybe he’d always feel her there. Maybe, he’d met the woman he was destined to spend his life loving and being the proud fool he was, he’d lost her before having the chance to build a real life with her. They had just been starting out! They had just found a way to be together to decide to trust one another not what they thought happened on the pier so many months ago. Now..He collapsed on a park bench and pulled his knees up against his body.
Ivy Crane stood silently nearby. They deserved to know the truth. The truth couldn’t change anything except maybe comfort Luis that Sheridan had loved him all along. She reached for her cell phone. Ivy called Ethan, “Darling, I need you to meet me in Lighthouse Park. By the pond. We have to talk.”.
When Ethan arrived his mother was shocked by his appearance. He now looked so much like Julian and Alistair. He was cold. There was no smile in his greeting, the kiss on the cheek was a habit not a sign of any real affection.
“Mother, couldn’t we have talked back at the house. Father and Grandfather are looking for you. They want you to set up some kind of a memorial foundation...”
“Ethan, we needed to talk somewhere without being overheard.” She hesitated. “Ethan, I get upset when you treat Sam Bennet badly because, well many years ago... Sam and I, Ethan, Sam was my first love.”
What? Ethan was stunned. Mother, what are you saying?
“Oh Ethan, it was over a long time ago. As much as I might wish I’d made other choices, I chose to marry Julian out of a sense of duty to my family. My father wanted the Winthrop Crane match and I was a coward. I should have stuck by my feelings and married for love. But I didn’t and I’ve regretted it every day since. Ethan, I’m telling you this now because, honey, I don’t want you to repeat my mistake. Don’t marry Gwen unless you’re really in love with her and don’t turn away from Theresa because you’re angry at Luis. Whatever choice you make, make it for yourself. Let your heart decide. Don’t let other people manipulate you into a decision. I want to show you something. This,” she pulled the mask from her purse, “this is why your aunt went to Paris. Your father and grandfather hired an actor to impersonate Luis. Julian kept this as a souvenir of his success. Luis never betrayed Sheridan, not then, and certainly not the night she died.
He was with the FBI - he didn’t leave her unprotected - he thought Hank would be with her. He never let Sheridan down, never. He loved her far too much to ever hurt or betray her by choice. He would have died himself first. This...this mask drove Sheridan to Paris. It was Alistair and Julian - their lies killed her. Not Luis. If she hadn’t gone back to Paris then she’d still be alive. I cant let you spend your life consumed by hate. You were born from such love and I cant allow you to be...”
“You just said you were forced to marry my father. What do you mean I was born from love...” Then his mothers words sunk in. He blanched. Ethan wanted to vomit. “Sam Bennet is my FATHER.” He turned and ran. Ivy watched him go then turned to see the Luis still collapsed on the nearby bench. “Luis,” she said approaching him quietly
“Ivy,” Luis spoke through tears of anger, sorrow and hate. “I don’t have anything to say to any one named Crane and I never will. Go away, leave me alone. You’ve all done enough..”
“Luis, wait, I have something to show you.” She handed him the mask and he looked at her stunned. “It’s all Alistair’s fault Luis, Not yours. He hired an actor to pose as you to say those horrible things that night. Those lies were enough to drive her from Harmony. She was in love with you even then. Before that. She was in love with you from the beginning. Luis, don’t you understand it’s their fault. If she hadn’t gone to Paris, she’d still be alive.” Luis wiped a tear from his face. He held the mask for a second then dropped it.
“It doesn’t matter. She’s ...”
“What matters Luis,” Ivy said kneeling in front of him, “is that she loved you. She loved you even before you followed her to Paris. She loved you so much. You have to take comfort in that Luis. She really did love you.” It was all too much for him. Instead of comfort he could only think of the months it had cost them apart. He should have had more time with her. He’d wanted a life with her. He walked away even more sullenly than before. Ivy stood with tears in her eyes. She missed Sheridan too.

In a Paris restaurant, Hank Bennet took another sip of his wine. He looked at the slime ball across the table and grinned evilly. “Yeah, I was a bit freaked at first, more than a bit. But, I’ve decided I like the sense of power. Real power you know? Life and death.”
“To power,” his companion Roger said raising his glass. This new recruit had potential.
\—\
Hal Freeman arrived at the Lopez Fitzgerald house. Pilar opened the door and stepped aside to let him in. “Good News, I hope,” she inquired. Her household was falling down around her. Theresa seldom left her room and Miguel was trying so hard to be all things to all people. She was hoping Agent Freeman had something positive to say. Luis came through the kitchen door and found his mother with the FBI agent in the living room.
“Good, you’re home. I need you to come with me. We have some questions for you in Quantico,” Hal said.
“Go to hell,” Luis muttered. “I’ll never listen to another word you say, you bastard. She’s dea.” He still couldn’t say the word aloud. “Because you and I were on our way to Quantico. We left her with him...and she’s..
“Luis, I don’t have time for your questions or for you to argue with me.”
Luis responded with a punch to the other man’s abdomen. Hal curled over in pain. “In case you haven’t heard Freeman, I lost my badge. I don’t have to follow your orders any more. So, I’ll ask all the questions and argue with you all I damn well please.” Luis stormed towards his room.
“Sheridan always complained that you’re stubborn and arrogant. You plan to prove her right.” Hal called after him when he caught his breath.
That did it. Luis turned around. “You aren’t even fit to say her name. Why don’t you just leave me alone? Or you like watching people suffer and die by inches... Well, I’m not here for your entertainment.”
Hal grabbed Luis. “We’re no where near the end of this Luis. Some interesting information has come to light recently. A lot of people in some very high places have a lot of questions for you. You’re not a suspect, but this may be a chance for you to redeem yourself. Now are you coming voluntarily or do I place you in handcuffs in your mother’s house?”
“You’re really out to cover your ass aren’t you Freeman? All right.” He turned to Pilar who had watched the scene in silence. “Mama, I have to go with him. I’ll be home...”
“When he gets here Mrs Lopez Fitzgerald.” Hal finished the sentence for him. “I don’t want you to worry unnecessarily. He could be gone for several weeks. He’ll be incommunicado the whole time. You’ll need your passport.”
Luis’ s temper exploded but this time Hal was prepared ducking the blow and firing a shot to the younger man’s jaw. The force of the blow surprised Luis. “Now,” Hal said in a quiet voice. “Have you gotten yourself under control or in deference to your mother should you and I take this outside?”
Luis looked at him. “Under control.” The two men stood eye to eye. Luis packed some things into a duffel bag and kissed his mother on the cheek. “I love you Mama.”
“And I love you Luis, be careful my son.” She said as he followed Hal to the car.
“Where are we going?” Luis said wiping a trickle of blood away from his jaw. He hated this guy. It wasn’t rational but hell, Luis hadn’t felt rational in weeks, not since he stood over her body...The sick feeling came back as he saw her again in his mind’s eye. It was the image he hated the most. The body bag. Sheridan was claustrophobic because of dreams she’d had as a child. He remembered how she hated small places...how she’d grabbed his hand in the air duct in the Paris hotel even though she swore at the time that she hated him. .As hard as Luis tried he couldn’t replace that image. They pulled up to the Bennet house and Sam got in the car. Like Luis he had a suitcase - he’d been expecting them. The drove to the marina in a tense silence. Hal couldn’t believe his own actions. He’d never become emotionally involved in a case. Not in all his years with the bureau. But, these people made this case different.
“I couldn’t tell you back there.” Hal replied motioning for both men to take a seat, he picked up the cabin phone and said, “Please tell the captain to get underway.” He turned back to Luis and Sam who had set down their bags and were looking around the room. “Gentlemen, We believe this case is ready to break. The three of us will be meeting with more agents here, and in New York. Then we’re off to France to finish this. Our contact in the cartel there may be in over his head. I need the best there is and that’s you two...”
“I told you on the phone agent Freeman, I want some answers. NOW. What does all this have to do with my brother Hank!!” Luis face bleached further at Sam’s words. He still held Hank responsible. He’d left Sheridan in Hank’s care. Hank had let him down. Luis’ grief was now his only friend. If he was here to help Hank, he was heading for the door.
Hal grabbed Luis’ arm, and said in a menacing voice, “It’s time you both found out. Hank had secrets to keep. Secrets which made him vulnerable. I have reports for you to read, you have to understand, this case is bigger than either of you had ever thought. We’ve had an agent in deep cover inside the cartel’s US operation for many years.”
Luis read the documents in disgust. Hank Bennet never ceased to amaze him. “So the cartel used this to blackmail Hank into...” Luis couldn’t finish the sentence. “And you guys knew about all this and didn’t...”
Sam looked as bad as Luis. “I knew Hank had probably been in some trouble at some time and yeah, this isn’t exactly penny anti stuff. But it’s hardly life ruining either.”
“It is if your brother is chief of police.” Hal reminded him. “Hank had returned to Harmony to start over. He hoped that by settling down, he would be able to keep his secrets. They blackmailed him into pulling the trigger. He switched sides the night Sheridan died. Hank is our man inside the cartel now. He’s in the process of drawing Roger into the open. I knew you’d both want to be there when all this ended.”
“NO.” Luis stunned the other two men with his answer. “I’m not helping you pull Hank. He can rot in hell for all I care. You’re telling me He SHOT HER. In cold blood, to cover his own ass, he SHOT the most beautiful...”
“I think everything will become clear in a moment Luis. Follow me.” Hal lead them through the yacht. It was a beautiful craft. The kind of place someone like Sheridan Crane would have been quite comfortable calling home for months at a time. The stateroom door was open and a woman stood looking out the window with her face in her hands. Her back was to them. If it hadn’t been for her sad countenance she would have been exceptionally pretty.
Even in jeans and a sweatshirt she had the kind of curves that if a man were a car he would love to hug. It couldn’t be, but Luis couldn’t help thinking, “Sheridan.” He broke into a run and Hal held Sam back slightly. Luis’ mind raced, God, the resemblance was uncanny. No, it was more than that. He caught himself whispering her name.... He caught himself whispering her name a second time as if it were a prayer. Then, she turned. It was ... Sheridan.
“Give me a moment and I can explain everything..” Hal said although neither Sheridan nor Luis appeared to notice he or Sam were in the room. They’d met in the middle of the room and she was in his arms. They fell to their knees and were kissing one another like there was no tomorrow. The ache in his heart dissolved and was replaced with a hunger that he couldn’t control. Sheridan was alive!!! She was back in his arms. And he was in hers. Finally they came up for air.
“I must be dreaming... Hal how is this possible...” Luis began to recover from the shock. They were seated together on the floor with Luis holding her in his lap. Hal smiled at them and nodded to the chairs. Suddenly aware of their situations, they looked sweetly at one another and Luis pulled them to their feet.
“Yes, Agent Freeman, how IS this possible. Luis and I were both there when the paramedics and Eve said there was nothing they could do...” Sam was stunned. “I’m sorry Sheridan, it’s not that I’m not glad to see you but...” She hugged him.
“I understand. I’m glad to see you too.” Sheridan said. Luis pulled her back to his side.
“You’re not leaving my arms...never again.” She leaned in for a butterfly kiss and their foreheads touched. They followed Hal to the chairs which made up a small conversation area in the stateroom. Luis settled her on his lap on the love seat while the two other men plunked into soft green leather chairs. She rested her head on Luis shoulder keeping her arms wrapped securely around his neck. She closed her eyes and savoured the feeling.. It had been so long..
Luis felt badly now for the scene in his mother’s living room. Hal had just been doing his job. Sheridan was safe, all the pain was gone. He felt his spirit melting the winter mood which had frozen over his heart. She was alive - the love of his life was at his side. Like a warm spring breeze his spirt was calm again. The world was new again. “Hal, about earlier, at the house, I owe you...”
“Forget it Luis,” Hal smiled. “I can only imagine how distraught you’ve been... Just forget it. I want you to know how sorry I am for the secrecy and for the pain this caused you both.” Hal said sincerely then turned to Luis’ boss. “Sam, you both have to understand that faking Sheridan’s death was the only way we could guarantee her safety. Hank was cracking under the pressure. If we were going to use him to find Roger, he had to kill Sheridan and believe he’d really killed her.”
“The body...” Luis whispered shuddering slightly at the memory. Sheridan cuddled closer, running her hand absently through his hair.
You weren’t supposed to find my...” Sheridan couldn’t say the word. “The drugs they gave me create a deep coma - under the circumstances, with two albeit ‘fake’ gun shot wounds distracting everyone, there’s no way that anyone would have assumed I was still alive. My body temperature would have dropped, my heart rate slowed, respiration was next to nil. The drugs took affect right after the second shot.” She turned to look into Luis’ eyes. “You weren’t supposed to be there. Luis, I’m so sorry you saw that...you...must.. have...”
He kissed her gently. “You’re alive. That’s all that matters.” He kissed her again cradling her face in his hands. He gently caressed her face as she deepened the kiss. His other hand absently stroked her thigh as she curled deeper into his lap. Once again they were oblivious to their friends who sat in the room in a knowing silence.
Sam and Hal looked at one another. Sam smiled and ever so quietly suggested. “Why don’t we leave these two alone for a while?”
“Good idea, “ he replied and they walked to the main cabin. “I’ll explain where we go from here and what’s next. I’ve asked Ethan Crane to meet us in New York.”
“Ethan? Why Ethan? He’s ready to kill Luis himself. Hal, you don’t intend to let him in on all this do you?”
“Sam, we need Crane family support for the next step. It’s critical. I told you we have an operative under deep cover in this Cartel - that man is Martin Fitzgerald.”
“Martin - This is getting even more bizarre. Luis doesn’t have a clue does he?”
“Nor does Sheridan, it was safer that way. I’ll tell them both soon. But Sam, you have to understand. Alistair Crane, not just Roger, is the real target of this investigation.”
“Alistair ordered the hit on his own daughter? Hey, even I don’t believe that.”
“No, he didn’t order the hit. He even tried to stop it but as connected as the two organizations are they are still separate in some ways. Martin Fitzgerald made it his life’s work to stop Alistair Crane’s criminal activities. But, there are thousands of people in New England who rely on Crane Industries legitimate operations for their livelihoods. Ethan Crane has to be brought into the loop so that he can step up and keep those companies afloat while his grandfather pays for his crimes.”
“This keeps on getting better and better.” Sam replied. As tense as the situation remained, Sam couldn’t help wishing Grace were at his side. He always felt stronger, more sure of himself when Grace was with him. “Agent Freeman, Do you happen to have any aspirin?”
“My diet consists of mainly of Aspirin and Rolaids chief.” Hal said reaching into his pocket and tossing Sam a small package. “It has for some time.”
\—\
Sheridan blushed when they realized they were alone. “Uh, Luis, when did they leave?”
He chuckled. “I don’t know and frankly, I don’t care. One quick question though, this thing is underway, do you have any idea where we’re going.” He said running a trail of kisses along her jaw.
“The yacht is headed for New York, that much Mark, the ship’s captain, said to me when he told me Hal was coming today.” She punctuated the sentence with kisses to his cheeks and throat. He responded by trying to switch their position on the love seat. Sheridan realized that with his long legs there was no way he was going to be comfortable where they were. “Luis, I have an idea we might be more comfortable over there - it will take a couple of hours for us to reach the harbour.” She inclined her head toward the bed. Luis kissed the tip of her nose.
“I haven’t been comfortable any where in weeks...” the words caught in his throat. She placed a hand on his cheek and looked deeply into his eyes.
“Neither have I...I need you Luis, now, I need you so much. I’ve dreamed of being with you again..of finishing what we started to...Luis...” She whispered his name as if she was afraid to say it out loud. She was almost afraid to believe she was really with him again. He felt it too. A need to really make sure it was real. He was afraid he was dreaming too.
“Some dreams do come true. An hour ago, hell, fifteen minutes ago I didn’t believe that but now...” Luis stood lifting her as if her weight meant nothing to him. He carried her across the room as she traced his neck with tender kisses. He set her gently on her feet and kissed her again on the lips. “I need to see you Sheridan, I need to touch you.”
“Love me Luis, Please love me. I know this isn’t anywhere near over and it’s not perfect like we wanted for our first time but we still have that night - the dinner, the flowers, we’ve had romance, I want you so much...”. and she did want him desperately. Their time apart had torn her up inside and now, she had to feel complete again.
“It can only be perfect Sheridan, this is you and I. I love you Sheridan, I love you.” He whispered over and over as they began to remove each other’s clothing. He paused when he saw a fading bruise on her chest. “You did get hurt that night...” He whispered as he traced the outline causing her to shiver.
“The bullet wasn’t the problem, they told me that this is from all the CPR,” she replied kissing his bare chest and pulling the sleeves off his shirt from his arms.
“I did that??” he said aghast at himself. “Sheridan, I hurt you...” He started to pull away.
“Luis, you tried to save me, I only wish I could have prevented you from seeing all that. I’m fine, please, believe me, I’m fine.” She took his hand in hers and brought it up for a kiss. He saw her smile up at him. “I love you Luis, let me show how much.” He pulled her into his arms again and kissed her deeply on the lips. Their jeans eventually hit the floor in a pool by the bed and they stretched out side by side under the covers. They worshipped one another tenderly, neither content to lie back and let the other do all the exploring and pleasuring. When he finally slid inside her they stopped for a second to look into one another’s eyes. “I love you,” they said in unison neither surprised at their words. Tears of joy replaced the endless tears of pain they’d shed the previous weeks. Nothing would separate them again. He would make sure of it and so would she. This time there were no interruptions. An hour later they guiltily looked at the clock beside the bed. “As much I’d like to make this go on for ever...” Sheridan whispered gently, “Hal needs us upstairs.”
“I was just thinking the same thing.” He kissed her gently. “Nothing is going keep me from you again. No matter what, from now on, we share the same bed every night. At the end of each day, and when I wake up every morning, you’ll be beside me.”
“Sounds perfect. Luis, whatever else we have to go through before this ends...as long as I’m with you, nothing else matters.”
They dressed quickly and made their way up to the main cabin. In spite of the serious nature of their situation, both were smiling. Hal and Sam had papers spread out on the table. A pot of coffee stood half empty. Sheridan poured herself and Luis a cup and passed him his. She took the pot and freshened Hal’s and Sam’s a second later. “Thanks.” Sam said looking up at her. “It really is good to see you Sheridan, I know I should have said it earlier, but...”
“I was probably a bit distracted too.” She said smiling over at Luis. “You know I’ll do everything I can to help Hank.”
“We both will.” Luis added. “Let’s get to work.” He wanted to put an end to this. He wanted to go home to Harmony and begin building a real life with her. Nothing else mattered.
“Luis, I hate to do this to you twice in the same day, but there is something else you need to understand.” Hal began. This case has been almost 15 years in the making. The threat to Sheridan was just a small part of it. This cartel, and its American connection have been the target of a combined FBI and CIA operation for a number of years.” Hal reached for the phone. “We’re ready.”
“Captain Mark,” Sheridan said as the man entered the room. “Coffee?”
Luis paled. He reached for her and put her behind him as if trying to protect him. “That’s who??”
“The Captain, it was Mark who finally convinced Hal I wouldn’t make it through another night without you. Luis, what’s wrong.”
“Son?” Mark asked. “You know who I am don’t you. It’s me. Your father Martin Fitzgerald.”
“Papa?” Sheridan clutched his hand tighter.
“Mark, I don’t understand.” Sheridan said, “You’re Martin.”
“I’m sorry I deceived you Sheridan, but yes, I am Martin Fitzgerald.” Luis fled the room and went out on the deck. Sheridan went after him.
“Luis wait..” She called and he spun to gather her into his arms. He broke down. It was all too much. He was holding her and his father was nearby. “Luis, shh,” she comforted him softly, “hush Luis, we have to go back in there...face this man, find out what he knows, what he wants, who he is. Hal said there was more to this than we could know. Maybe...”
“Listen to her Luis, Sheridan is right.” Sam came up behind her. He placed a hand on the younger man’s shoulder. “Hal told me that your dad has been in deep cover investigating the Cranes for more than fifteen years.”
“To hell with the Cranes, why wasn’t he with my mother. We needed him. What kind of a man could do that to his family, how could he let her wonder all these years if he was alive or dead? How could he miss my brothers and sisters and I growing up.”
“Luis,” Sheridan took his face in her hands. “We can’t answer that for you, but Mark, MARTIN” she corrected herself, “can. You need to know, I would have cracked completely without him here everyday to see me through this. I want you to know, if I had known the truth about his identity I would have told you myself right away. Luis, there have been too many secrets and half truths between us and they kept us apart..too long... You promised me nothing else ever could.” She wiped a tear from his face. “Together, we can face this. I’ll be right here.” She squeezed his hand in hers and he pulled her into his arms for a bear hug. He savoured the feel of her against him for a second and then gave her a half hearted smile.
“Okay.” He said. “I’m ready.” He looked up and saw his father standing in the doorway. Martin was afraid to approach. He had so much he wanted to say and so little time. “Stay with me,” Luis asked Sheridan as he moved towards his...father.
“Promise.” She whispered back. Martin held out a hand to his son. Luis took it and then, the two embraced for the first time in more than 15 years.
“Papa...” Luis repeated over and over again. “It’s really true. You’re here.” Martin smiled and gently rubbed Luis’ back.
“I’m here son, I’m here.”
\-----\
Less than an hour later, the yacht arrived in New York at a private club just outside the city. Ethan stood on the pier restlessly pacing back and forth.
“Sheridan,” Hal said, “we need you to wait in the main cabin. We can’t afford for you to be seen unless Ethan agrees to the plan.”
“I want to see him, you promised..” Sheridan reached for Luis’ hand. He took it and squeezed it gently.
Hal continued. “And I’ll deliver. He’ll come to the main cabin as soon as he understands what’s at stake here. Just remember he’ll be in shock. Seeing you will be...”
“The cure for all that ails him. Just like it was for me.” Luis finished the sentence and drew Sheridan right up against him. He placed a butterfly kiss on her cheek. “Hal, you’re sure there’s no evidence that Ethan is involved in the criminal side of all this.”
“Positive, otherwise I wouldn’t have risked Sheridan’s safety.” His next words were directed to Sheridan. “Are sure he’ll agree to help us?”
“I always trusted Ethan,” she said softly. “Always.” Sheridan settled into the arm chair to wait as Ethan was allowed on board. Luis hesitated at the doorway. Martin smiled.
“I won’t let her out of my sight son. Do your duty.” Martin spoke with both affection and authority.
“What the hell are THEY doing here?” Ethan demanded as he saw Hal approach with Sam and Luis at his heels. “I agreed to meet you here to discuss my late aunt’s case!!! The bungling of the Harmony PD is at the top of my list!”
“Mr Crane,” Hal began, “Chief Bennet and Luis Lopez Fitzgerald are here at my request.”
“Well, I demand they leave.”
“Ethan, look son, that’s not going to happen.” Sam tried to be reasonable. Ethan blanched at the word son. Did Sam know the truth?
“Don’t ever call me that Chief. And trust me if my family has anything to say about it no one will be calling you Chief for very long.”
“Mr Crane, please. Chief Bennet and I need to explain several things to you. We believe that we have reached a critical juncture in this case. But before we bring you up to speed we need your pledge that you’ll suspend your disbelief and that you’ll follow our instructions to the letter - more lives could depend on that.” Hal’s tone brooked no argument.
“More than enough people have died thank you Agent Freeman. Because of them.” Ethan’s conscience took over. He looked at the stone faced Hal. He looked to Luis. Luis looked visibly better than Ethan had seen him in weeks. Maybe they were on to something. He had to know. He took the risk. “ All right you have my word.” Ethan was surprised at their cloak and dagger behaviour. Sam and Hal looked at one another and nodded in agreement.
“Come with us.” Hal said leading the way to the cruiser’s main cabin where Sheridan waited. “Everything will make sense in a moment.”
Ethan was still in a foul mood when he entered the room. He directed his next comment to Luis. “I still hold you responsible for this. She died because you let her down, you never should have trusted her with anyone else. She trusted you...”
“And I still do.” Sheridan interrupted him. Ethan had the shock of his life. He rushed across the room and grabbed her squeezing her so tight she wasn’t sure she could breathe. “Ethan, I’m fine - I have so much to tell you. But, Ethan, It’s really me and I really am fine.”
Ethan’s emotions came flooding out. Relief, Joy, Shock, all washed over him. Luis handed him a drink which he swigged. “I can’t believe this, Sheridan, I saw you dead at the cottage, in a casket, I watched them bury you. Sheridan, how....”
“I’ll explain everything. Just, please, Ethan listen to Hal..I also want you to meet someone. She held her hand, “this is Martin Fitzgerald, that’s right Luis’ father. We all have a very complicated story to tell you, each of us only knows parts and we have to put it all together. Ethan, we need your help to shut down the cartel that tried to kill me and to save Crane Industries. But Ethan, you also need to know, Luis and I are together...” Luis stood at her side now placing a protective arm around her waist.
“You always should have been. It was father and grandfather who engineered the scene on the docks that night...where you overheard Luis say he was using you. It was an actor. Mother showed me the mask he wore that night.”
“We know that now. Are you ready to hear this now.”
“I’m ready.” They sat down.
Martin began. “This story actually starts during the Vietnam War. I was with Army Intelligence operating from various points all over the region. My team was tracking a South East Asian drug ring which used both legitimate and not so legitimate French and American companies to front transportation, launder money, you know name it. One of those companies was Asia-Ameri Trade..”
“That’s a Crane Company.” Ethan interjected.
Martin continued. “That’s how I first met Alistair Crane and one of his associates Antoine Maritz. Maritz was the French connection in the drug ring that I had been trying to break. I had connected with him in Saigon posing as an American business man primarily trafficking in cocaine but with interests in gambling and prostitution.”
“Growing up, you never told us anything about your Vietnam Days. It was a closed subject. I remember finding your uniform and...”
“I was proud of my service to our country son, just not of the man I had been forced to portray during that time. I eventually built the case against Maritz and we nailed him. I never found a connection to any Crane Company. As far as I was concerned, Alistair Crane was a nice man who happened to have some questionable taste in associates. You have to understand though, Drug trafficking in Thailand at that time was a capital offence. Maritz’ whole operation was a shambles. I made a huge dent in the trade and, I like to think saved some US servicemen’s lives in the process. I also, in so doing made a number of enemies. Eventually, I was discharged from the service, met Pilar, and went to work at Crane Industries as a security director. Little did I know that Maritz had managed to tip Alistair to who and what I had been and that Alistair wasn’t as clean as I had thought.”
“I have a hard time believing my Father was involved in drugs.” Sheridan said softly. Luis wrapped an arm around her shoulders and she snuggled in. “Please go on, I shouldn’t interupt.”
“I understand Sheridan, and I don’t think he really knew what he was smuggling until after the fact. Unfortunately for me, drug lords have long memories and deep pockets. One night I was called to the main house where I saw Maritz. He’d bribed the Thai officials and another man was executed in his place. I thought I’d ducked before he saw me but I couldn’t be sure. I went straight home and contacted a buddy who was still in Intel. They staged my disappearance. Luis, I told your mother I’d be back as soon as I could. It’s never been safe for her or you kids if I did return. I have watched you grow, I do know what wonderful young people you are. I’m proud of all of you. And I will go home to your mother. Just like Sheridan couldn’t contact you to place you or herself at greater risk. Son, you have to believe me.” Martin’s voice broke.
Luis looked him in the eye and nodded. “It won’t be long now. Mama, she’s always known you were alive. She never believed you were separated from her by choice. She’ll be there, waiting.”
Hal took over the narrative. “Interpol has since learned that Maritz was gunned down in a take over of the cartel by an underling named Roger..” He watched as Sheridan cringed at the name. Luis stroked her hair. She looked up at him and smiled slightly.
“The man who ordered Sheridan’s hit.” Ethan was catching on.
“That’s right. Roger is the most illusive man Interpol has ever seen. While the FBI has been building a case against Alistair Crane on this side of the Atlantic, we never knew where his supply originated. Not until Hank Bennet of course.”
It was Sam’s turn. “Hank was travelling the world acting as a courier for the Maritz cartel. He’d do some smuggling, work odd legitimate jobs, travel and see the world. For Hank, at that stage in his life, Harmony was just a dusty backward little town. He wanted the world. That is, until he had a really close call. He decided to quit while he was a head, abandon that life and return to Harmony. He met Sheridan on the road one day and saw her as a ticket to the easy life he wanted. He’s not stupid, he knew a good thing when he saw it, Sheridan was smart, pretty and rich enough that if any of his old acquaintances came looking, they’d have to leave him alone.”
“And who knows, if I’d had better taste in men at the time, I wouldn’t have been involved with Jean Luc in the first place. But, I was thinking about that jerk and how he hurt me when I was speeding along a road on the outskirts of Harmony. Well, that’s how Luis and I met.”
Luis laughed. “I’ll never forget her first words to me...My name isn’t buddy and my butt is anything but SORRY. He leaned behind her for a playful peak. You were right too. Cute little butt.”
“LUIS!!! She smiled at him. “Anyway, Luis and I slammed into one another and made history. Hank isn’t a bad guy really - just incredibly...”
“Selfish.” Sam replied. “Look, we can’t all make excuses for Hank, but he did come through in the end. He called the FBI and they managed to protect you from Roger.”
“Agreed.” Sheridan replied. Anyway, I had fled Paris without knowing Jean Luc had been killed. When I went back to Paris I wanted to return his watch - that’s when I saw Roger and Pierre. You know the rest.”
Ethan nodded. That’s when the hit became active and when, thanks to Luis, you were safe. What I don’t understand is how they managed to find Hank to get him to ki...”
“They traced him through old American connections - that guy on the pier who held the gun to Luis head was gunning for Sheridan. He knew Hank from the old days and figured out Hank was one of her friends. The FBI arrived in Harmony too late to stop that attempt on Sheridan’s life. Fortunately for her Luis was always at her side. You’re a very lucky woman Sheridan.
“Tell me about it.” She replied looking up at Luis. He smiled at her adoringly.
“Anyway,” Hal continued, by early October the Cartel had lost patience and decided to send one of their insiders to Harmony to pressure Hank. They saw him as the key to a clean assassination. The FBI decided for her safety to allow them to succeed.”
“It very nearly worked.” Ethan muttered. “You haven’t told me how I can help?”
“While we go to France to apprehend Roger, we want you to assume control over Asia-Ameri Trade and shut it down. Find some reason to suspend operations. That should distract the cartel and help flush them out. Luis, Sam and I will work with Martin to bring down the Maritz cartel and get Hank out safely. Our major concern is that they’ll discover he’s an operative. We heard from him two days ago to say he met with Roger. It’s time to extract him.
“Excuse me Hal, you mean Luis, Sam, Martin you and I.” Sheridan said angrily. I owe Hank my life - I have no intention of cowering on this yacht waiting for my hero to come back to me. I’m going to France with you.”
“I can’t allow that Sheridan.” Hal said. “You’re still a witness in need of protection. You must remain in hiding til this is all over.”
“No,” Luis looked at Hal. “I’m not leaving her again Hal. I promised her she’d be at my side. I’m not breaking that promise. I’ll cover her personally but she stays with me day and night. Twenty-four/Seven just like in Harmony. ”
“Luis, that’s not practical.” Sam tried to explain.
Martin, who had been silently listening to the exchange said almost in a whisper, “love seldom is, Sam. Love seldom is. Gentlemen, I know what Luis and Sheridan have gone through better than any of you. If he’s willing to vouch for her safety, keep them together. Luis won’t be able to think of anything else if they’re separated and Sheridan will go crazy waiting for news. It’s a trade off: We can’t ask them to be apart again and we need the manpower.”
“All right.” Hal said reluctantly. “Sheridan, you’re one persuasive lady.”
\----\
Hank Bennet left the next meeting information in his pillowcase as per instructions. When the hotel maid came in to make up the room she read the note. She pulled a cell phone from her uniform. “The meeting is set. The west side of the Tour Eiffel. Wednesday at 2pm. Monsieur Bennet will meet with Roger. We will finally have him.”
\----\
“Sheridan, I want you to promise to wait in the hotel room. I’ll be back as soon as I can, but please, promise me you’ll wait here with Papa.” Luis and Sheridan stood holding hands in front of the balcony window in their shared room. The flight to France had been uneventful and they had received news from the French Police about the rendezvous location and time. “This is drawing to an end and I know you’ll be safe with Papa, then we can all go home. Build our life together. Ethan has the cartel doing somersaults in New England. Hal’s confident they’ll be shut down today too.”
“I’ll wait in a car in the plaza but not here. I won’t let you out of my sight Luis. I’m not ready to...”
“Sheridan,” Martin spoke softly. “Let Luis and Sam do this with Hal. I may be too old for this kind of extraction exercise but Luis knows I won’t let anything hurt you. Trust Sam and Hal to take care of Luis for you. But give them the space they need to let them make sure Hank gets out of this too. Trust us. We know what we’re saying.”
“Be careful.” She whispered with a tear in the corner of her eye. He kissed her gently and walked toward the door. “I love you.” She called after him. He turned back and pulled her against him.
“I love you too.” He kissed her again. “Papa...”
“I’ll take good care of my newest daughter son, I swear, she’s in good hands.” Luis hugged his father and left the room reluctantly. He met Sam and Hal in the hall.
“So did you have to tie her down to keep her in there?” Hal joked
“Practically. Papa’s the one who got her to agree. Hal, in case I forget later, Thank you for everything. You could have kept her in hiding even from me until this went down. I want you to know we both appreciate you giving us the time together.”
“Don’t mention it Luis. I didn’t understand the concept of dying from a broken heart until I watched the two of you the last few weeks. Just make sure I get an invite to the wedding.”
“You’ll get a front row seat man.” Luis replied. “Right beside Sam and Hank.”
“Sounds like a plan.” The two men hugged. Hal said, “Let’s get this done.” The three men loaded guns and headed out the door. They took up positions at the rendezvous point.
Roger didn’t know what hit him. The three men tackled him from three sides pulling him to the ground. The gens d’armes arrived to take him away. Hank was also taken into custody and then released to the care of the FBI. Hank was a basket case. “Luis, Sam, how come you’re here, there’s so much I need to explain to you, so much I wish I could do over again.”
“Don’t say anything little brother. We know it all.” Hank looked shocked and couldn’t meet their eyes.
Luis decided to tell him the truth. “But you don’t know everything. You didn’t kill her. Sheridan’s fine. She’s alive and can’t wait to see you. Come on, we’ll take you to her.”
Hank and Sheridan were reunited. He was in tears. “Sheridan, I didn’t want to do it...I wish I could change...”
“Hank, I want to be able to say we can be friends again, I want to, I really do but. I’m going to need time. I don’t hold you responsible, I know you tried to stop it by calling in the FBI but I wish you’d gone to Luis or Sam. But Hank, it’s done. I’m alive, Luis and I are together so, it’s done. Let’s just try to move on ok?” Sheridan was a generous person. Luis’ cell phone rang.
“Yeah, I’ll let her know.” he replied and handed it to her. “It was Ethan, they’ve picked up your father in the US and have a very solid case against him. Ethan wants to know when you’re coming home.”
They looked to Agent Freeman. “How does tonight sound Sheridan.?”
“Wonderful, home tonight sounds wonderful.” She smiled. Luis pulled her into his arms for a kiss.
Martin smiled. “Doesn’t it though.” Martin agreed.
As they started down the stairs of the charter jet Sheridan hesitated. “Ready to go home? The limo is right where Ethan said it would be.” Luis asked.
“No, I don’t ever want to see the mansion again. I’ll never think of it as home. Home is wherever you are..Do you think Pilar would mind if I came home with you..”
Luis had been absently caressing Sheridan’s hair. It felt like silk between his fingers. He kissed the top of her head. “No,” he whispered quietly. “Mama will be glad to see you. But tomorrow I want you to find something else okay. Living with my family isn’t going to work.”
“What!!” She was stunned. He swept her off her feet as she burst into tears trying to pull free from him.
“No,” he repeated. “I want us to find a place we can call our own. The house on Railroad Street already has a Mrs. Lopez Fitzgerald. It doesn’t need another one...and there are going to be two as soon as I can arrange it.” She looked into his eyes and saw the tears in the corners. “I’ve tried to live without you Sheridan, I can’t. I don’t want to be separated from you for another minute. The past few months have been crazy but, Sheridan, I won’t ever live like I did those days when you were gone. Marry me, now. As soon as it can be arranged. Hell, lets stop and see Father Lonnegan on our way home. What do you say?”
“Yes, oh, Luis yes.” Sheridan answered with a kiss.
THE END... FOR REAL THIS TIME...
