To Family
“To family, nothing more sacred, no bond as strong.”
Teaspoon’s words struck an emotional chord in me. Tears sprang into my eyes and I quickly looked down at my plate. My blood family wasn’t whole anymore. Pa and Samuel were lying cold in the ground, while my Ma and the rest of my siblings were back home.
I miss them terribly and found myself homesick from time to time. I wrote to my ma and sisters often, and they sent me letters back, but it wasn’t the same thing as being at home with them.
I had my PX family though, and that was cause enough to make me smile again. The other riders could vex me sometimes, but they were always there when I needed them. Teaspoon was an ornery old coot and so very different from my own pa, but he was a good man, and someone I admired. Emma was built of the same sturdy pioneer stock that my ma was, and could rival her as a cook to boot.
I reckon I was pretty lucky to have two families, when a lot of folks didn’t even have one.
