Fan of the Month

October 2002

Our fan for this month has been around since the very begining of TYR land on the net. As a matter of fact she was the very first fan to have a website for The Young Riders. Our fan this month is none other than Wendy. We would like to thank her for starting the wonderful land of The Young Riders on the net.

Wendy

1. What is your name or TYR name?

Wendy, but my friends know me as The Future Mrs. Josh Brolin.

2. How old will you be on your next birthday-include the date if you want?

I would like to say that I don’t believe in birthdays and that I never age, but sadly enough, I’ll be 28 in mid October.

3. Tell us a little about your childhood.

My childhood was probably pretty normal. It had its ups and downs as anyone’s life has. It involves good parents and good siblings. My childhood couldn’t be compared to Leave It To Beaver, but thankfully enough it wasn’t Married With Children either.

4. Are you married, have children?

Nope and nope.

5. What do you wanna be when you grow up?

So many things. A Writer, an explorer, an archeologist, a cowgirl, a rockstar, a film director, and when I settle down, I’ll be The Future Mrs. Josh Brolin. ;-)

6. What really annoys you the most?

Boy, it’s really hard to narrow it down to one or two things. Everyone has annoying qualities. Perhaps people who believe themselves to be faultless have a tendency to annoy me. That kinda goes hand in hand with people who make idiotic statements, accusations and purposely look for problems and don’t have the balls to admit they’ve made a mistake really annoy me. But luckily enough, I’ve learned to ignore such idiots.

7. Who are your fave characters and why?

Jimmy is the first. I think he was the most developed character of the series. His character grew through all 3 season of the show. When you compare the characteristics of 1st Season Jimmy and 3rd Season Jimmy, you see two totally different men. I love the cocky headstrong Jimmy of Season One because you know there is a lot of aggression and frustration that he is holding inside and you yearn to find out everything you can to figure out what is making him tick. I love the patient, caring, and socially conscience and matured Jimmy of Season Three because you see all the lessons he’s learned over the previous years from Teaspoon and his experiences through the Express. I love the fact that Josh was strong enough to carry the show through some of the bad writing and directing. I truly think Jimmy made the show.
I also adore Emma. She was the ideal frontier woman. She stepped in as a mother to the riders and gave them guidance and led them through some of their difficult times. I really think it’s a shame that Melissa was replaced and we couldn’t see how much further Emma’s love and compassion for the riders could have been explored.

8. When did you find the TYR sites on the web and start visiting them regularly?

I created the first TYR site on the Internet: The Young Riders Express Station Page. I created it in February of 1997.

9. Who was the first person that you had contact with from TYR land?

If memory serves me correctly, it was a woman named Ishani, who also helped me with a lot of the recovery work when the site crashed that first year. The first person I met in the fandom was Shannon, who used to run Just Kidding Around. She may actually be tied with Jessica, who I met on the same night during the first Reunion. I’m happy to say that both friendships are strong and have survived many trials and tribulations that have sprung up in the fandom.

10. Do you have a site or share a site with someone?

The Young Riders Express Station

11. If you could be one character from the show(guest stars included)who would it be?

Very tough question!!! There are only 3 women to choose from. I could never be Emma, because I thought she was perfect in her character and characteristics. I wouldn’t want to be Rachel because I thought her character was too liberal in many respects of the era and what the station mother should have been (again, no one compares to Emma). That would only leave Lou. Although Lou definitely had a great role considering she was the only girl amongst the riders, and her character was good for the purpose, I am probably too frumpy for such a role. It’s adventurous pretending you're someone your not and working in disguise could have some advantages, but I would get tired of it after a month. I would blow my cover before too long.
If I was one guest character, it would probably be Alice (I think that’s who she is) from The Peacemakers. I thought she was sweet and could have been a great kindred spirit to match Jimmy’s uncertainty in life and provided him with some of the questions he struggled with. I love the bundling scene during that episode.

12. Which ep is your fave and least fave and why?

Favorite Ep: The End of Innocence. This was a great Jimmy episode that showed the depth and heart that Jimmy carried. It showed us the sensitivity that he possessed and his vulnerability, which all of us carry inside. You realized that Jimmy did not believe himself to be superhuman and we see a clear view of the regrets and fears he had hidden when he came face to face with his own mortality. I remember this was the episode when I realized that Jimmy was the rider of the show that would outlast all the others. And this is the episode that displays Josh's acting talents and it truly makes you want more!
My least favorite Ep: Song of Isiah. This episode of course introduced the woman I consider The Spawn. (Rosemary). But all Spawn kidding aside, the episode was horrible for many reasons. Aside from the terrible writing and directing, Jimmy was totally out of character. I get a big feeling that Josh was drunk during many of the scenes and I refuse to believe that Jimmy would have found solace in someone like Rosemary. It’s true he had fallen for the wrong woman before, but she was the worst, and proved even worse by Til Death Do Us Part, which was a flat out catastrophe due to the fact that out of all the guest characters (and including Emma and Sam from Season 1), the writers decided to bring Rosemary back as the final guest character. What becomes increasingly worse is that we are led to believe that Jimmy might have ended up with her.

13. If you could meet one person-dead or alive-who would that be and why?

Another tough question. I feel like my answer changes from month to month. One of my first choices would be Freddie Mercury. He was one of the greatest figures of this past century. What he gave to the world of music can never be measured or duplicated. I consider him one of the greatest performers of Rock-n-Roll and led the world of rock music through massive cultural changes and has influenced so many of today’s performers across all music spectrums and genres. (my mom is an Elvis fan, so I’ve already pleaded the argument. For the record, Freddie Mercury credits a great deal of his influence on Elvis as well)

14. If you had five minutes on national TV to discuss any subject-what would it be and why?

Very tough again. There’s too much going on in the world to narrow it down to the problems facing our country and the state of security and well being. Maybe I would just go on sing a song. Or I could go on and remind people to never forget to live. Life is short and it’s important to find what matters most to you and give it your all. Never be afraid and never surrender.
