PG-13 Authors Notes: This is the sequel to my story “Faith in Love”. It’s advisable but not essential to read that first. PART 1 “Ahhhhhhhh!” She screamed as the pain ripped through her body. All her muscles tensed up and she rode out the pain, gripping tightly to the object in her hand. Slowly, as the pain began to subside, her ridged body started to relax, allowing her to flump back against the large pillow behind her. It was only a few minutes rest-bite, she knew the next one would come along very soon, but any break from the pain was gratefully received. She wasn’t the only one grateful for the break in pain. As she slowly released her vice like grip on his hand, he tried to move his fingers, desperate to check they weren’t broken or something. He knew when it was over, his fingers would be bruised and battered! “Ahhhhhhhh!” Her screams started again, as the pain took over her body. Once more he was ready for the onslaught of crushed fingers and loss of feeling in his hand. Mind you, he knew that the pain he felt in his right hand was nothing compared to what his wife was going through. Lying in the hospital bed, she looked so beautiful he thought. Her face was flushed red through exhaustion, her skin thick with sweat and perspiration. Her hair was pulled back, but some strands had come loose, sticking to her face. Pushing some of the strands away, he looked into her eyes and tried to show her the immense love he felt for her right then. She was going through so much pain for him, to give then the most precious gift. A gift no amount of money in the world could buy. The gift of life. A child that they had made, that had come from the amazing love they felt for each other. “I hate you!” She screamed at him, her voice full of venom. “Yeah I know, and I love you too!” He sarcastically replied. “It’s all your fault I’m in so much pain!” She added. “I know babe, but it’ll be all worth it soon.” He replied gently. “That’s easy for you to say, you don’t have to go through this torture……. Ahhhhhhhh!” She finished as another contraction commenced, and the assault on his hand continued. Michael couldn’t help but smile as she laid back down on the pillow exhausted. He knew she’d been through hell with the pregnancy. Suffering with morning sickness, ballooning out much more than she thought she would, and now an early labour. She hadn’t been due to give birth for at least another two weeks, but that certainly wasn’t stopping the proceedings. At first, when she felt her first contraction, they’d panicked, thinking something was seriously wrong. But on arrival at the hospital, the doctor had assured them that everything was fine, the baby had just had enough and wanted to be born. So here they were, nearly six hours since they had arrived, still only slightly further along than when they’d come in. The contractions were every seven minutes now, and the doctor assured that it wouldn’t be too much longer. “Too much longer! How much longer can she cope with this amount of pain!” Michael thought to himself. He hated seeing Maria in agony, especially when he knew there was something he could do to help ease it. He wished she’d agreed to take some drugs or something, instead of just the gas and air she sucked on every so often. He knew it was just her stubbornness that was stopping her, her desire to have a natural birth. Yet he thought she was just being down right stupid, the drugs could help with the pain, stop her getting so tired. But no, Maria had to be the martyr to the cause, just one more reason to blame him for pain! Wiping away some of the sweat on her face, he wished she’d let him help her. Moving his hand down over her swollen stomach, he tried to ease the pain without her knowing. “No Michael, I want to do this on my own.” She insisted, realising his plan “But you’re in so much pain and you’re so tired, please let me help.” “No, this is important to me. Please promise me you won’t do anything.” She maintained, as she felt the start of another contraction. “Promise me.” She added breathlessly. “Ok, I promise.” He reluctantly replied, knowing in his heart that if things got much worse he’d do it whether she liked it or not. What was the point in having powers that could take pain away if you didn’t use them? “How about taking a break for a few minutes?” A calm voice behind him said. “No, I’m ok.” He replied. “Go on Michael, you deserve it. Your hand needs a break anyhow.” Maria said, relinquishing her grip on his fingers and watching him flex them gently to check they were still attached. “Max is outside with a cup of coffee with you.” Liz replied before Michael grudgingly left the room. “How are you doing?” She added to her friend as she moved to stand beside the bed. “Ok I guess.” Maria said “But you never told me how bad the pain was going to be.” She added. “I’m sorry ‘Ria, it will be worth it though, I promise. Just think of that wonderfully, beautiful baby you’ll have at the end of it.” Liz said, trying to keep her friend’s spirits up. “It’d better be wonderful and beautiful after this!” Maria whipped back, sucking in a deep breath as another contraction fiercely attacked her body. “Perhaps you should think about some sort of pain relief?” Liz said gently, knowing it was a sore subject with her friend. “No! Look you managed it without any pain relief, and I want to too.” “Just
because I did, doesn’t mean you should ‘Ria.
You look exhausted, how much more of this can you take?” “How’s it going?” Max asked, handing his friend the drink. “Slowly.” Michael replied, gratefully falling into a vacant chair. “This is the worst part though, waiting.” Max advised. “Yeah, that and the fact I don’t know when I’ll next be able to feel my hand!” He joked “Ooh I remember how that felt!” Max replied. “Just don’t tell me, I really don’t want to know!” Alex added, not wanting to hear any gory details. “Yeah, and then there’s all the blood and ………..” Max said, watching Alex squirm. “Please Max! I really don’t need to hear this.” Alex complained. “Sorry mate, I’m only joking.” Max replied. “You ok honey?” Alex said, seeing his wife walking towards him. “Yeah, just got a bit of back ache.” Isabelle replied placing her hands at the small of her back. “Here, let me help.” He offered, standing up and walking behind her to massage the painful part of her back. Considering she’d been worried and scared when she’d found out she was pregnant, Isabelle practically radiated. Her ‘bump’ was growing larger by the day, and Alex often joked to her that she’d ‘pop’ before the baby was born. Despite the early bouts of morning sickness, she’d had a pretty much near perfect pregnancy, much to Maria’s disgust. To Maria, Isabelle had everything perfect. A beautiful house, wonderful husband, stunning looks, and to top it all a flawless pregnancy. It wasn’t that she wished anything bad on her friend, but Maria just sometimes wished she could have the easy life too. “Oh god Liz, how did you manage to go through this at 17?” Maria asked her friend. “I really don’t know Maria. It hurt like hell, but I guess it was worth it, I wouldn’t swap Ellie for the world.” “There’s got to be an easier way though!” A little while later, Michael returned to Maria’s room and resumed his position as ‘chief hand holder’. By now things were starting to move along, contractions every two to three minutes, and the nurses began to fuss around in preparation. “Ok Maria, now with the next contraction I want you to start pushing.” The doctor announced. “Great, I ride the pain and now I’ve got to find some energy to push!” She mumbled. “You can do it sweetie, just think of that gorgeous baby at the end of it.” Michael encouraged. From their advantage point in the waiting room just outside Maria’s door, they could hear everything that was going on. Laying her head on Max’s lap, Liz tried to get a few minutes rest, feeling exhausted suddenly. Stroking her hair to help her relax, Max thought back to the time when Ellie was born. It had been nearly six years previously, yet he still remembered being at work when he got the call. It has been Maria who had called him, saying Liz had been taken to hospital. He’d grabbed his jacket and raced out of the office, not even taking time to tell his secretary where he was going. Once at the hospital though the fighting began. Liz had been adamant that she didn’t want Max there and hadn’t wanted Maria to tell him. But Maria had decided that Max had the right to be there when his child was born. At first Liz had refused to have Max in the room, but as the pain got worse, so did her fears. She was afraid something was wrong, perhaps her baby wouldn’t be ok, and she knew having Max beside her would calm her. It had done the trick, as soon as he entered the room and taken hold of her hand, she’d felt at ease. He could still remember the overwhelming swell of emotions when Ellie had been placed in Liz’s arms for the first time. His little girl looked so tiny, so pure and naïve. He certainly wasn’t too proud to admit he’d shed a few tears that day. Placing his hand protectively on Liz’s swelling stomach, he thought about what it would be like this time. Yes he’d been through it before, but this time he felt so much more involved. He’d been with Liz every step of the pregnancy, from helping her through the bouts of morning sickness to feeling the baby move and kick for the first time. Inside he couldn’t wait, he knew this baby would complete their family. “Oh god, I can’t do this anymore!” Maria screamed as the doctor ordered her to push once more. “Yes you can Maria, just a few more pushes and it will be over.” The doctor replied. “Come on ‘Ria, it’s nearly over.” Michael added as she pushed once more. “I never want to go through this again! There is no way I’m gonna let you get anywhere near me to get me pregnant again.” She complained. “Sure, no problem, what ever you say pixie. Let’s just get this over with.” Michael encouraged. He was hoping that once their baby was placed in her arms, she would forget all about what she’d said previously. A few minutes later and the room was filled with lustful cries of a baby rudely awaken from her slumbers. Falling back on the bed, Maria couldn’t believe it was over; her baby was finally born. “It’s a beautiful baby girl Maria, all ten fingers and toes and definitely a good pair of lungs.” The doctor said, wrapping the little one up in a blanket and handing the bundle to the new mother. “Oh Michael, she’s beautiful.” Maria cried, as tears rapidly tumbled down her cheeks. “Yeah, just like her mum.” Michael replied, totally in awe of what he had just witnessed. Touching his new baby daughter’s cheek, he marvelled at how soft and silky her skin felt. Tears welled up in his eyes as he stared at mother and child, totally overcome by emotion. Touching her husband’s cheek, Maria turned and smiled at him, a smile that confirmed all she had been through was certainly worth it. On hearing the robust cries of a newborn baby, all four friends jumped to their feet. At first Max had been afraid he’d woken his wife who was dozing on his lap, but she soon quelled his fears. “Max I’m a mother, I’m tuned in to the sound of babies crying!” She confirmed as they all headed for the window of Maria’s room. Peering in, they saw the happy sight of mother, father and resting baby. “I think you’d better let them know.” Maria said catching her friend’s eye. “It’s a girl!” Michael beamed as he opened the door to the room and allowed his friends to flood in. “Oh Maria, she’s perfect!” Liz squealed, kissing her friend’s cheek. “Liz is right, she really is beautiful.” Isabelle added smiling at the new mother. “Thanks, I can’t even begin to describe how I’m feeling right now.” Maria replied, the huge grin on her face evident of her happiness. She knew she should feel exhausted after what she’d been through, but at that moment Maria was functioning on adrenaline alone, she felt invincible. As all the friends chatted around her, Michael suddenly noticed Maria’s face contort and screw up in agony. “You ok ‘Ria?” He asked. “No.”
She forced out. “Oh god that hurts!” She cried out, moving one hand from the sleeping baby to her stomach. “I’m going to get a doctor.” Michael insisted before bolting out of the room. “Ahhhhhhhhhhh”
Maria cried out, as Liz took the baby from her friend’s arm.
“God what’s happening to me?”
She cried out through the pain. “Ok,
let’s clear the room please.” The
doctor ordered, as the four friends headed quickly back to the waiting room.
Cradling the newborn girl, Liz held her tightly as she sat down, praying
that nothing would happen to the little girl’s mother. “What
is it? What’s wrong?” Michael asked, terrified of the pain his wife was in once
again. “Just
give us some space and let us do our work Mr Guerin.”
The doctor insisted. “Is
that blood? It is isn’t it, oh my
god!” Michael cried. “You
should wait outside.” A nurse
suggested, seeing Maria getting distressed by Michael’s words. “No,
I want to be here with my wife.” Standing
in a near empty waiting room outside Maria’s room, Michael looked completely
lost. A few moments before he had
been the happiest of his life, and then suddenly Maria was doubling over in
extreme pain once again. What the
hell was going on? “It’s
ok Michael, I’m sure she’ll be ok.” Max
said, putting a supportive arm around his best friend. “I
don’t know ok. But you have to
stay calm, for Maria and the baby’s sake.”
Max insisted. Turning
his head, he saw his new baby daughter laying peacefully in Liz’s arms as she
and Isabelle cooed over her. A bolt
of anger and resentment ran through his veins as he thought of his wife fighting
for her life in the next room.
PART
2 For Michael, the waiting outside seemed to last an eternity. The not knowing what was happening was doing his head in. His friends tried to rally around him, keep him calm and his spirits up, but all the while all he could think about was Maria. He felt so powerless, so totally out of control. Warding off the FBI had been easy considered with the situation he was in at that moment. At least back then he’d felt like he was actually doing something. Here he was just waiting helplessly, hearing Maria’s cries of pain but being able to do nothing at all to help her. “If anything happens to her I’ll never forgive myself.” He said to himself as Max tried to comfort him The deathly silence was only broken once or twice by his daughter’s cries, and the occasional scream from Maria. Liz’s attempts at pacifying the little baby worked to an extent, but the little girl could obviously sense something was wrong with her mother. Hugging the little girl close, Liz prayed Maria would be ok, praying she’d be able to enjoy her new bundle of joy. As he waited outside, he heard Maria let out a more piercing scream than normal, indicating she was definitely in severe pain. “That’s
it, I can’t do this any more Max. I’m
gonna go in there and help her. And
if that means using my powers then so be it.
I’m not going to loose her.” Michael
insisted. Taking a couple of long strides, Michael swung open the closed door to Maria’s room and burst in, just in time to watch his second daughter being placed in his wife’s arms. “Oh my god!” He yelped at the sight in front of him.. “It’s twins!” Maria cried out, tears drenching her face. Michael stood in the doorway for a few seconds, griping the doorframe tightly for support, rooted to the spot. Only a few moments earlier he’d thought he was going to loose her, and here she was with another baby, it was all most too much for him to cope with. Taking a few steps to the side of her bed, Michael put his arms around her neck and sobbed openly. His show of raw emotion touched the very depths of her heart and she comforted him. His normally defence-held emotions were laid out so frankly to her as she soothed his back. “I though I was going to loose you.” He managed to force out, as he tried to control his emotions. “No chance, you don’t get rid of me that easily.” She replied through her own tears. They held on to each other tightly, as the nurse took their second daughter away to be cleaned up and weighed. Once their sobs subsided, Michael lifted his head and smiled at his wife. “Don’t you ever scare me like that again.” He said wiping away his tears and then reaching to remove hers with his finger. “I don’t intend to Spaceboy. That was agony.” She replied as her other four friends loitered in the doorway. “You can come in, I promise not to double over in pain like last time.” Maria said. “I’m glad to hear it, two little Guerins is bad enough, but three …… well that just doesn’t even bear thinking about.” Alex joked. “Here ‘Ria, I think she wants her mummy.” Liz said quietly, placing the eldest sleeping tot in Maria’s arms. “Thanks Liz, for taking her. It was comforting to know she was safe.” Maria replied softly to her friend. “No problem.” Her friend answered. “So, have you thought of names yet?” Liz added. “Well ……….. we’ve got one name, this little one is going to be called Charlotte Elizabeth, that’s the one name for a girl we both agreed on.” Maria said pointing to her eldest daughter. “And what about this one ‘Ria, she needs a name too?” Michael asked about their youngest daughter laying in his arms. “Well, I was thinking about Emileigh Isabelle, what do you think?” “I think that sounds perfect sweetie.” Michael replied. “They are really beautiful names ‘Ria.” Isabelle said, cooing over Emileigh. “Yeah, they fit them perfectly.” Liz added. “Ok, we should let you to have some space, you’ve got a lot to take in.” Max said, as the other three friends nodded their heads. “I’ll come back and see you tomorrow.” Liz added as she kissed her friend’s cheek. “Thanks guys, and thanks for being here for me.” Maria said. “Yeah, thanks Max.” Michael added, hugging his friend. “No thanks necessary mate, I’d of been the same if it was Liz.” He said quietly so only Michael could hear. It had been quite a day for everyone concerned, and both Michael and Maria were grateful for the time they had alone with their two newborn daughters. “I can’t believe they’re both girls though. I honestly thought you were going to have a boy.” Michael said. “Ah, I guess we can’t win them all.” Maria replied, their youngest daughter greedily eating as Maria nursed her. “But that means I’m really out numbered now. God I’ll be black and blue once these two get older.” He said tenderly cradling Charlotte in his arms. “Oh I think you’ll have a few years yet.” “I can’t imagine them as little people though, it’s hard enough comprehending that they’re ours.” He admitted. “I know what you mean. It’s hard to believe that for at least the next 16 years they’re gonna depend on us for everything.” Maria added. “Yeah, and we’re gonna make sure they get everything they want.” Michael replied adamantly. “Oh they’ll be spoilt rotten if it’s down to you!” Maria joked. “But they’re daddy’s girls, they deserve to be spoilt. I can’t believe no one spotted you were having twins though. “ He chirped back. “I know, I mean Liz had joked I was big enough to have twins, but I didn’t believe her, I mean there was only ever one on the scans. I guess they just kept hiding. Wanted to scare their parents!” Maria replied “Well they certainly managed that one!” Michael added. “Our lives are never gonna be the same now are they?” “No, I don’t think they are.” Michael conceded. “These
two are so precious, they’re gonna need lots of protection, now and in the
future. If any of your enemies ever
wanted to get at us, they’d have the perfect answer.” “I won’t let anything happen to these two, I promise.” He said sincerely, as he marvelled at his two daughters. “Wow, Maria and Michael really went through a lot today.” Isabelle said as they travelled back to Max and Liz’s house. “I know, it’s kinda scary how quickly it can go wrong.” Liz replied, as both girls subconsciously touched their respective bumps. “God I hope nothing goes wrong for us.” Isabelle added. “Hey, don’t you two start worrying, nothing is going to go wrong.” Max said as he turned the corner. “Don’t you worry either Isabelle, or junior in there will start doing summersaults.” “Oh no, I don’t have the energy for that!” Isabelle replied, snuggling up further to her husband. Placing his hand on top of Liz’s Max swore to himself that nothing would go wrong with their baby. There was no way he could go through what Michael had been through that afternoon. Knowing something was seriously wrong with Maria, but being totally helpless to do anything was not something he wanted to experience, ever. He couldn’t even begin to imagine how Michael had been feeling, all previous times Liz had been in trouble he’d been there to help her. But to just stand around and be able to do nothing, that was not something he wanted to go through. Stopping at the traffic lights, Max turned to look at Liz, who was dozing on the front seat. Glancing in the rear mirror, he also saw Isabelle resting on Alex. Both girls looked exhausted with everything they had been through that day, and toped with their advanced pregnancies, it wasn’t surprising they’d flaked out. He was glad they were relaxed enough to sleep after the day’s events. For more than once in his life, he marvelled at Liz’s strength of character. Having him in her life had put her through so much, yet she never let any of it get her down, always just taking it in her stride. He knew the events with Maria earlier had nothing to do with ‘aliens’ but it had still been a tough time. And he guessed Liz had thought about ‘what if that had of been me instead of Maria’. Imagining herself in tough situations seemed to be Liz’s way of becoming stronger, preparing for the possible or maybe the inevitable. That was Liz, always planning, always wanting to be one step ahead so when things went wrong she’d know what to do. As the lights turned green, Max pulled his food off the break and onto the accelerator as he moved the jeep from its stationery position. The
next few seconds happened extremely quickly, a car jumped the lights to Max’s
left, flying out of nowhere. In a split second, Max saw
the car and jumped on the breaks in an attempt to brace the impact, but it was
to no avail as the inevitable collision of cars occurred. All
four passengers in the jeep braced themselves for the impending impact, as a
shrill scream from the two girls was heard.
The other car crashed straight
into the passenger side of the jeep, the momentum pushing both vehicles across
the road for several feet. The sound of screeching tyres, crunching, shattering glass and ripping, crumpling metal filled the normally peaceful surround. As the jeep finally came to a halt facing the wrong way on the other side of the road, the whole area fell silent with no movement, except for the long continuous, unbroken sound of a car horn blaring out.
PART
3 Slowly lifting his head from it’s position on the steering wheel, Max tried to focus his eyes so he could think clearly. He wondered where he was a for a few seconds, before he remembered the crash. Reaching to his cheek, he lifted his fingers away to find them covered in sticky blood. Wiping it away from his eyes, Max looked round for the others. “Liz?” Max called out, looking over to the passenger seat. “What happened?” Alex called out from the back. “Are you ok?” Max asked “I
think so.” “Yeah, I’m still here.” She said unable to move from her position against her husband. With the impact of the crash, Isabelle had been thrown across the backseat, causing her to be launched into her husband. “Liz, honey?” Max asked again, gently shaking her arm. “Mmm.” She mumbled. “Are you ok, does anything hurt?” He asked her. Max knew she’d taken the brunt of the impact of the crash and he needed to know if she was ok. “Oww! My head hurts, and my shoulder.” She said groggily, slowly lifting her head. Blood was pouring out of a large gash just above her eye, making it hard for Liz to see clearly. Her head was spinning and a wave of nausea rushed over her body. “It’s ok, just stay where you are, it’s gonna be ok.” Max said trying to reassure her. Reaching round for his seat belt, Max clicked the button and released himself from the confinements of the driver’s seat. It wasn’t until he began to move, he felt a searing pain in his leg. Reaching his hand down, he could tell his ankle was broken just by the angle it was resting at. His foot had slipped on impact between the pedals, and he assumed he’d twisted his body and caused the damage. Knowing that he had to get the others out, he leant down and placed both hands on his ankle, and proceeded to mend the damage that the crash had inflicted on him. A few moments later and his ankle was back in its normal position, allowing Max to get out to help the others. Knowing that everyone in his car was at least conscious, Max’s thoughts went to the other driver. Walking round to the other car in the crash, Max wrenched open the passenger side door and peered in. He noted immediately that the driver was in a very bad way. He was covered in blood and shattered glass from the windscreen where his head had hit it. Max also noted the driver hadn’t been wearing a seat belt, something that would probably have helped lessen his injuries. Placing his fingers on the young guy’s neck he found no trace of a pulse and Max guessed he was dead. Going back to the others he pulled the driver’s seat back, leant in and gave Isabelle his hand so he could help her out of the car. Being on the opposite side of the crash, she’d only been jarred and shaken up by the impact. Max was grateful for that, the last thing he needed was Isabelle going into labour, after all she was due shortly. Ushering Isabelle to the grass area by the road, he made sure she was comfortable before going back to the crumpled jeep. Next out the jeep came Alex. He’d hurt his shoulder, dislocated it he guessed from the pain. The impact had slammed him into the side of the jeep, and then Isabelle into him. Joining Isabelle, he sat down on the grass verge by the side of the road. “I can help you get Liz out.” Alex offered. He hated the feeling of being useless when Liz was still trapped in the wreckage. “You stay with Isabelle. Keep her calm and relaxed, she shouldn’t distress the baby any more than already. Call an ambulance on Izzy’s cell phone, tell them what happened.” Max insisted before heading back to the jeep. He knew how ever much Alex wanted to help, with only one good arm he wouldn’t be able to do very much. In any event, Max didn’t really want to have to move Liz, the last thing he wanted was to aggravate any of her injuries. Getting Liz out by the passenger side was impossible, the other car was impaled against it. Climbing back into the driver’s seat, he began to talk to her again. “You sure nothing else hurts?” he asked softly. “I don’t think so, just my head, shoulder and side.” She replied, the pain she was feeling etched on her face. Placing his hand over her seeping cut, Max proceeded to fix the damage done when she’d hit her head on the dashboard. “Thanks.” She whispered quietly. “What about the baby?” he asked tentatively. “I …….. I d……. don’t know.” She said, fighting to hold on to her emotions. “I can’t ………. feel it moving.” She added. “It’s ok, Don’t worry Liz, I’m sure it’s just fine.” He said, trying to reassure her. Placing his hand on her stomach, Max tried to feel for the slightest hint of movement that would give them hope that their unborn baby was ok. Liz had about 2½ months before her due date, and Max hoped their tiny baby was strong. Closing her eyes for a few moments, Liz tried to ignore the pain burning through her body. Her mind couldn’t distinguish where the pain was coming from, all feelings just blending into one. Suddenly, something made her snap open her eyes, her body awake and alert. “What is it Liz?” He asked, noticing the change in her demeanour. “That smell Max, it’s gas!” She said as he took in a deep breath to confirm her suspicions. “Ok, just stay calm. We’re gonna have to get you out of here though.” He said trying to keep the anxiousness he felt out of his voice. He really didn’t want to worry her, even though he couldn’t help but worry himself. A smell of gas around a crash was never good, and moving Liz on his own wasn’t going to be easy. “Can you swing round at all? So that your back is facing me?” He asked “Erm, I think so. It’s gonna be hard though, there isn’t much room here.” She said, trying to pull her legs up to her stomach, so she could turn round. Putting his hands underneath her armpits, Max tried to lever her across towards the driver’s seat. As he pulled her over, Liz let out a loud cry. “Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!” She cried out, placing her hands across her bulging stomach. “I’m sorry Liz, I didn’t mean to hurt you. We’ve just got to get you out of here.” Max said, feeling awful that he’d inflicted pain on his wife. “It’s ok, keep going.” She said breathlessly, trying to overcome the immense pain she was feeling. Pulling her over the remaining distance, Max scooped his wife up into his arms and carried her way from the wreak of the jeep. Placing her gently down next to Isabelle, Max looked back at the jeep, and saw the large puddle of gas forming underneath it. “Erm guys, I think we should all get further away, in case it blows.” Max suggested, knowing there would be a huge blast if the gas ignited. With Alex helping Isabelle, and Max carrying Liz, the four friends moved further down the dimly lit road, and sat down by some large rocks. Placing Liz in front of one of the rocks to give her back some support, Max proceeded to check for any more visible signs of injury to Liz. He could tell Alex was struggling with the pain from his shoulder and Max wished there was something he could do. He knew all he’d have to do was touch Alex to fix the damage, but he also knew that it would look mightily suspicious if, after such a big crash, they had hardly any injuries. As it was, the fact that he had no injuries would look suspicious enough. As he sat down next to Liz, he put his arm around her to comfort her. The calmness of the situation now that everyone was out of the wreck was short lived. A few seconds later the gas leaking from both cars ignited, creating a massive explosion that lit up the darkening night sky. Both guys threw themselves over the girls in an attempt to protect them from the searing heat and any flying debris from the explosion. Whimpering underneath the protectiveness of his body, Liz couldn’t stop tears from falling down her cheeks, as the enormity of what had happened slowly sunk in. Slowly, once he was satisfied the worst of the explosion was over, Max lifted himself off Liz’s body. “You ok?” He asked once more, feeling like that was all he’d asked her recently. “Erm ………… no.” She replied honestly, as she sucked in a deep breath of air. “What is it Liz?” He asked, concerned. He knew that he’d heal any physical injuries she had, he didn’t want her in any pain. “The baby, I think it’s coming.” She replied as her face contorted in agony. TBC ………………..?
