Once Upon a Lifetime – By Kazza

Part 6

As the bright Saturday sun streamed into her room, Isabelle rubbed her eyes and glanced at her bedside clock.  It was a little after 10.00am and she was surprised she’d slept in so long.  Normally Max made way too much noise for her to sleep, but today she assumed she’d been so tired she’d slept through all his noise.  Getting up, Isabelle headed out of her room and was surprised to not find Max in the kitchen reading the weekend paper.  His Saturday ritual was always to read the paper as soon as it dropped through the door, yet today it was still lying on the doormat.  Realising something could be wrong with her brother; Max wasn’t known for lying in late at the weekend; Isabelle headed to Max’s room, opened the door quietly and peered in.

The sight that greeted her nearly made Isabelle keel over in the doorway through shock.  Her reserved, controlled brother was lying asleep in his bed, with a young brunette entangled in his arms.  Granted Max was lying on top of the covers, wearing a t-shirt and shorts, which was strange enough to Isabelle as he didn’t normally wear a t-shirt to bed; the young woman covered completely by the duvet, with only a small amount of the t-shirt she was wearing visible.  As if it wasn’t a shock enough to find Max sharing his bed, just as Isabelle started to leave the room, the dark haired beauty stirred and her soft hair fell away from her face, exposing her identity.

“Oh my god!”  Isabelle exclaimed, covering her mouth with her hand to quash the sound of her surprise.

Quietly leaving the room and heading back to the kitchen, Isabelle tried to take in and process what she had just seen.  Her brother hadn’t allowed anyone to share his bed in over a year and here he was bedding their secretary of just over two weeks no less!

“God how could he be so stupid!”  She muttered as she cracked three eggs into a mixing bowl and began to beat furiously.

She was so busy taking her anger out on the eggs, she didn’t hear Max get up and walk into the kitchen.

“Isabelle!”  He said shocked to see his sister in the kitchen.  “What are you doing here?  I though you were staying at Brad’s last night.”  Surprise in his voice very evident.

“I’ll bet!”  She replied sarcastically.  “I had a change of plan and it’s a good job I did.”  She said pausing for a second before continuing.  “How could you Max!”  She snapped.

“How could I what?”  He asked confused by her question.

“Look I know I’ve tried to set you up with my friends, but there was a little more than casual sex there, they really like you.” She said shooting an icy stare his way.

“Huh?  Hang on Is, I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.”  He insisted.

“Oh no?  I know Liz is here Max, so don’t even try to deny it.  How could you sleep with her?  She’s your secretary for gods sake. “

“Whoa slow down Is.  I haven’t slept with Liz.”  He replied, putting his hands up in front of himself defensively.

“I saw you Max, I came in to see why you weren’t up.  I saw her tangled up in your arms.  Don’t try and deny it Max!”

“Ok, yes I slept with Liz last night but that was it.  Sleeping being the operative word here, we didn’t have sex Isabelle.  Not that it’s any of your business though; I am old enough to make my own choices.  By the way, if you keep beat those eggs like that they might just bite back!”  He replied, angry that his sister had jumped to conclusions.

“So you’re saying all you did was share a bed?  Get real Max!”  Isabelle said, clearly not accepting his explanation, and beating the eggs harder in frustration.  “Is that why you left work early yesterday?  So you could spend the afternoon in bed with her?”  Isabelle snapped back at him.

“No, we left early because Liz wasn’t in a fit state to work.  If you’d actually stop jumping to conclusions and listen to me then maybe I’d have a chance to explain.”  He said angrily before continuing.  “Liz was attacked two nights ago.”  He added, lowering his voice.

“What?”  Isabelle exclaimed, finally relinquishing her assault on the eggs.

“It was Robin, he got too friendly and tried to push his luck.  She wouldn’t tell me at first, but I caught him threatening her yesterday and she eventually told me everything.  She was scared and I didn’t think she should be alone last night.”

“Why didn’t you sleep on the sofa or something?”  She countered narrowing her eyes at her brother.

“He did sleep on the sofa, but I had a nightmare and Max comforted me.  I guess we must have just fallen asleep.”  Liz said walking in and startling everyone.  As she turned to look at Liz, Isabelle couldn’t help but feel sorry for her.  With no make up on the bruise looked very angry and she could see the marks on her wrist that Max’s t-shirt he had leant her didn’t cover up.

“Oh Liz, I’m so sorry.”  Isabelle replied sincerely, her frosty front melting instantly.

“I’m ok.  Look I’ve imposed on you way too long.  I appreciate your generosity and kindness, but I should be going Max.”
”No Liz, you’re not imposing.”  Max replied.

“Please don’t go on my account.”  Isabelle added.

“No really I have to get home.  My cat will be starving.”

“Then I’ll drive you.”  Max offered.  “I insist.”  He added as Liz opened her mouth to object.

Thirty minutes later, Max and Liz pulled up outside her house.

“Thanks, really I’ll be fine now.”  She said trying to convince him as she climbed out of her car.

“If you’re sure.”  He replied, reluctant to let her go as he got out the car.

“I’m sure.  Thank you so much for everything Max, this definitely goes far and above your duty as my boss, but I really appreciate it.”  She said sincerely.

“You know where I am if you need me Liz.”  He replied pulling her into a hug.

“Thanks.”  She added, leaning in and kissing his cheek lightly.  She lingered there for a moment, closing her eyes, taking a deep breath of his cologne and savouring it.  Reluctantly, he relinquished his grip on her, allowing the young woman to head up the steps to her front door.  He stayed there until she had disappeared inside, then eventually got back into his car and rubbed his eyes with his fingers, brushing his cheek where she had kissed it.

Closing the door, she peered out of the window in the lounge, watching him sit in his car for a few minutes.  She knew she had overstepped the mark with the kiss on the cheek, he was her boss after all, but it had been instinctive.  He had opened her eyes the previous evening, he had been so caring and reassuring when she was scared, held her tight as she calmed down after the nightmare, stayed with her the rest of the night making her feel safe.  Somewhere along the night she suddenly realised she had fallen for her boss.  His smoky dark brown eyes danced around in her head as she closed her eyes briefly, and she found herself wondering what it would be like to run her fingers through his thick brown hair, kiss his soft lips, touch his bare chest …….

“Stop it Liz!  Don’t torture yourself!”  A voice inside her head yelled.  “He’s your boss for god’s sake, and just felt sorry for you, nothing more, get over it!”  The voice added.  Shaking her head, Liz tried to regain her composure as Tabby brushed passed her legs, meowing loudly, demanding food.

“Oh I’m sorry Tabby, let’s get you something to eat.”  Liz said, scooping the cat into her arms and stroking her as she walking into the kitchen.

As he sat in his office at work, Max put his elbows on the desk and rested his forehead against his upturned palms.  He had come in to work to try and catch up on what he had missed the afternoon previously by leaving early.  He didn’t normally work on Saturdays, but he didn’t have much planned and he had hoped work would take his mind off the previous night.  Holding Liz in his arms as she slept softly had felt so good, better than he had imagined.  He couldn’t decide when he had fallen for Liz, perhaps her first day, or even during the interview, but he now knew he had fallen head over heals for his young brunette secretary.  Remembering the feel of her lips against his cheek, he wondered why she’d done it.  Deciding it was just her way of saying thank you, he tried to get his mind back on work.  Yet each time he stared at the computer screen, her face jumped in front of his eyes, his mind remembered the feel of her soft silky hair against his arm, the touch of her velvet skin as he soothed her back to sleep.

“Oh god this is hopeless!”  He exasperated, rubbing his eyes.  In the end he got up to make himself a cup of coffee.  Yes, coffee always helped him to concentrate, and if he ever needed an extra large cup of concentration it was now.

“Max?  What are you doing here?”  Michael asked, as he walked into his friend’s office.

“I could ask you the same thing mate.”  Max replied looking at his friend.

“I’m in court on Monday, and I need to finish my research, what about you?”

“Trying to keep my mind off something.”  Max replied honestly.
”Off what?”

“Don’t worry, it’s a long story.”

“How’s Liz?”  Michael said, changing the subject
”Ok I think.”
”So, are you gonna help her prosecute?”

“That’s a touchy subject, but no she’s not gonna prosecute him.  I tried to persuade her to, but she wouldn’t have it.”

“You sure you can’t persuade her?  It’s not like you to give up on something like this, I mean he could attack someone else.  Come on Max, you’re a lawyer you can persuade anyone to do anything.”
” Thanks for the vote of confidence in my ability.  I know he could attack again Michael, I tried to tell her that.  Liz just doesn’t think she has the strength to go through a court case.  I did try and push her, but it just distressed her, so I decided to drop it, in the end it’s her decision.  I can’t make a case up if the star witness isn’t prepared to testify.  Anyway, need any help on your case?  I’m not getting much done here.”  Max offered.

“Nah I’m ok.”  Michael replied, heading out of the office.

For Max, the morning passed fairly quickly, once he had eventually got his mind away from Liz and back on work.

“For gods sake can’t she get anything right?”  Max heard Michael yell from outside his office..

“What’s wrong?”  He asked, sticking his head out of his office.

“That dozy secretary of mine, Maria DeLuca.  I asked her to copy some files, and she’s done all the wrong ones, now I’m gonna have to do them myself!”  Michael complained.
”Give her a break Michael, I’m sure she didn’t do it on purpose.”  Max replied trying to defend the girl.

“Yeah right, she’s such a scatterbrain, I swear she doesn’t listen to me most of the time.”

“Mmm, maybe she’s too busy staring into your eyes!”  Max joked.

“What?  God Max don’t be so ridiculous!”  Michael snapped back.

If it hadn’t of been for the quickness and sharpness of his reply, Max wouldn’t have noticed.  It had been purely a joke, nothing more, but he saw in his friend’s face something he hadn’t seen before.  There was a flicker of emotion, a softness in his eyes just for a few seconds.

“You like her don’t you?”  Max asked boldly knowing for well it would get Michael’s back up.

“What?  Don’t be absurd Max!  You know how much she annoys me, she always has some sarcastic remark to get my back up, and can’t even do simple tasks without messing it up.”  He replied holding up the offending wrong photocopied files.

“Yeah right Michael, this is me you’re talking to.  It is ok to like her you know, I don’t mind.”
”Look Max, I don’t know if you’ve lost your marbles or something; but wherever you got that ludicrous thought from, send it straight back.  I do not have any kind of feelings for Maria DeLuca except for annoyance that she can’t do anything right.”  Michael snapped before turning and storming off towards his office.

“Uh huh of course Michael, whatever you say.”  Max called after him, as a smile spread over his face.

His friend’s defensiveness under cross-examination proved Max’s suspicions, Michael most certainly did have feelings for their wacky blond secretary.

Part 7

It was Monday morning, and Liz stepped out onto the New York sidewalk, starting her morning ritual of walking to work.  People hustled and bustled around her as they hurried to work.  Liz noted that, in New York, everyone seemed to be in a rush, pushing past people without even a polite ‘excuse me’.  Her slow pace to work was deliberate; she didn’t want to arrive at the office any time soon.  She had nearly thirty minutes to kill before she had to be there, so she took the long route, walking through Central Park.  It was extremely quiet, not many people came to the Park in the mornings, except for the odd jogger or person walking their dog.  The walk served to help calm her body that was tense at the prospect of what faced her that morning.  He was only due to be in the office for the morning, having an appointment away from the office that afternoon, but Liz suspected it was going to be a very long and difficult morning.  It would be the first time she would face him since the previous morning when he’d dropped her off, since she had over stepped the mark and kissed his cheek.  She had managed to sleep fairly well the previous night, only walking up twice in cold sweats with memories of the attack swimming in her mind.  Her bruised face was still fresh, but she was becoming an expert at applying make up to cover most of it.  Facing Isabelle was also going to be a challenge, she thought.  She had heard enough of her bosses’ conversation in the kitchen the previous morning to know what Isabelle had thought they’d done.  Liz wasn’t sure how Isabelle would react to her, and more to the point, how Max would be around her.  Eventually reaching the large glass doors of Evans Associates, Liz pushed them open and slowly entered the building.

As she took her jacket off, the first person Liz saw in the office was Isabelle.

“Good morning Liz, how are you today?”  Isabelle asked kindly, all trace of her icy personality evaporated.

“Good thank you.”  Liz replied politely, warming to the new side of her boss.

“I’m glad to hear it.  I’m going to an appointment shortly, could you please retrieve the Adams file and bring it into me as soon as possible.”  Isabelle replied, the usual sharpness in her voice quickly returning.

As her boss walked away, Liz couldn’t understand Isabelle.  It was obvious she was a nice person, yet she refused to allow anyone to see the real her.  Liz assumed that to Isabelle it was easier to pretend she was somebody she wasn’t, rather than allow people to see her vulnerabilities.  Heading off to the photocopier room, Liz set about finding the Adams file and then took it into Isabelle’s office.

Ten minutes later, everyone had arrived in the office, everyone that is except for the one person Liz was afraid of seeing again.

“God I’m so glad Michael isn’t in today.”  Maria said as she sat down at her desk.

“Oh Maria, now I *know* you don’t mean that!”  Liz chirped back.

“Oh yes I do.  I really don’t need his moaning and winging today.  Why does he always seem to pick fault in everything I do?”  She complained.

“Liz, when’s Max due in?”  Sally asked interrupting Maria and trying to make the question look innocuous.

“Soon I think.  Why?”

“Oh, no reason.”  Sally replied, brushing off Liz’s question.  As Maria turned to look at her other friend, she saw Sally turn away to hid her face.  Turning back towards Liz they looked at each other, silently communicating with their eyes, both wondering what was wrong with Sally.

She was so intent on wondering why Sally had asked about Max, Liz didn’t notice him come in.

“Good morning Liz.”  He said as he walked past her desk towards his office.

“Oh, Max, hi.”  Liz replied, startled that he had seemingly appeared out of nowhere.

“Sorry, did I make you jump?”  He asked, noting her edgy response.

“No!  No, I’m fine.  I’ll get your coffee.”  She replied, jumping up from her desk and heading towards the coffee machine.  Slightly confused by her reaction, Max headed off into his office, deciding he must have interrupted something.

“Thanks Liz.”  He said, as she placed the cup on his desk.  “Are you ok, you know, really ok?”  He added.
”Yes, I’m ok.  I’m feeling much better now thanks.”  She replied still feeling slightly uneasy in his presence.

“Liz, are you nervous around me?”  He asked bluntly, staring at her shy face.

“Erm ………… yeah, I guess so.”  She replied honestly.
”Why?”
”It’s just, I guess it’s hard to see you as just my boss, you know after how kind you were with me on Friday.”  She replied.

“Then don’t see me as just your boss, I want to be your friend too.  Is that ok?”  He asked hopefully.

“Yeah ………… I mean, yes I’d like that.”  She replied before bolting out the door.

He couldn’t keep from allowing a smile to creep across his face as he watched her scamper out of his office.  Her shyness was one of her most endearing personality traits, one that had drawn him in to her.  Shaking his head, he returned to concentrating on the file in front of him, knowing he needed to get it finished for his meeting that afternoon.

By the time they returned from lunch, Liz noted that the office was extremely quiet.  Only she, Maria, Sally and Alex were in, with all their bosses out at client meetings or in court.  Settling in to start her work for that afternoon, Liz began to type a letter Max had left her.  As she began, the phone on her desk started to ring.

“Hello Evans Associates, how may I help you.”  She answered politely.

“Liz it’s Isabelle.  Is Max around?”

“Erm no, he left for a meeting while I was at lunch.”  Liz replied.

“And is Michael still in court?”
”Yes, I believe so.  Is everything ok?”  She asked
”No, I’ve got a flat tyre, and I’m not sure how to change it.”  Isabelle replied honestly.
”Ok, well erm ………. Alex is here, I could get him to come and help you?”  Liz offered.

“Ok, yeah that would be great.  Can you call Adams and let them know I’ll be late.  The file’s on my desk if you need the number.”

“Sure no problem.  I’ll transfer you to Alex and you can let him know where you are.”  Liz replied before putting the phone on hold.

“Alex, Isabelle’s got a flat tyre, can you go and help her change it?”  Liz asked.
”Sure!”  Alex replied eagerly as Liz transferred the call.  Liz couldn’t help but giggle at Alex’s keenness to help Isabelle.  She knew that the chances of them actually ‘getting together’ was pretty slim, but she wasn’t about to admit that to Alex.

Inside thirty minutes Alex was beside the freeway, changing the tyre on Isabelle’s Ford Taurus.

“I’d help, but I don’t want to arrive at this meeting covered in oil or grease or something.”  Isabelle piped up.

“It’s fine, honestly.”  Alex replied grinning up at her from his crouched position by the car.  Staring up at Isabelle, Alex felt like he fell in love with her even more.  She looked her normal fiery professional self, but he could always manage to see through her frosty exterior and deep inside her.

As she watched him work, Isabelle couldn’t help but smile at him.  She found him cute, the way he always seemed to be prepared to do absolutely anything for her.  In her mind, Isabelle was sure if she’d ask Alex to jump, he’d definitely ask ‘how high’.  Cute as it may be, it did sometimes annoy her though.  She couldn’t understand how someone like Alex would think he’d have a chance with someone like her.  She was way out of his league; to her he was simply the junior lawyer of the office.  She guessed he lead a simple life away from the office, going out with friends, maybe the odd party, but nothing like her lifestyle.  She couldn’t imagine Alex going to any glitzy parties like she did with Brad, she was sure it wouldn’t be his scene.  For Isabelle though, the party scene was a big part of her life, she loved it way too much to give it up, even if she didn’t really, totally love Brad.

“Right, I think I’m just about done.”  Alex said standing up and breaking Isabelle from her thoughts.

“Oh ……… erm, thanks very much Alex, I really appreciate your help.”  She replied heading to the driver’s side and climbing in.  Alex stood by the road as he watched her pull away; feeling satisfied he’d been able to help her.  He knew in his heart there was no way she’d look twice at him, but that didn’t stop him dreaming about her, he hadn’t chosen to fall for Isabelle and he certainly couldn’t stop the feelings he had for her.

“I know she’ll never feel the same way about me Liz, but I just can’t help it.”  Alex said sadly.  It was the following day, and he and Liz were out at lunch together.

“Oh I’m so sorry Alex, I don’t know what to suggest.  I know that Maria and Sally don’t see Isabelle the way you do, but I have seen her caring side.  All I can suggest is you just stick there and hope eventually she sees your feelings for her.  God knows I know how that feels.”  Liz replied, saying the last sentence quietly.

“You like someone?”  Alex enquired, picking up on her quiet words.
”Yeah, but like you they hardly know I exist!”  Liz replied.

“God we’re a right pair aren’t we!  Look, I hope I’m not out of order, but my father is throwing a party on Friday night.  Would you like to come?”  He asked  “As friends of course.”  He added hastily.

“Erm, well I don’t know, parties aren’t usually my scene.” Liz replied hesitantly, not sure if she felt up to socialising just yet.

“Please Liz, it’s going to be really boring as it is.”  He pleaded.

“That’s not exactly the best way to persuade me to come along, telling me it’s gonna be boring!  But, ok, why not, I’ll come.  Thanks very much.”  She replied smiling.

“It’s gonna be quite glitzy, so you’re gonna need to dust off your party dress!”  Alex replied.

“Mmm, dressing up, sounds fun!”  She replied giggling.

Alex was pleased she’d accepted his invitation.  He knew something had happened to her, they all did, but no one had asked her.  Robin had suddenly disappeared, and the only explanation Max would offer was he had done something wrong and wasn’t coming back.  Gossip was flying around, but nothing firm was known, and he had a feeling it had something to do with Liz.  Hoping the party would lift her spirits, he felt more happy at the impending ‘gathering’.

On Friday night, as she sat on her bed staring at her closet, Liz wondered what she should wear to the party.  Alex had said to ‘dust off her party dress’, but what exactly did that mean?  Was he just joking, and meant something smart/casual, or was he being totally serious, and meant she had to dress up fully?

“God why couldn’t he have been more specific ………..  or more importantly, why did I say yes!”  She exasperated before falling backwards, laying out on the bed.

Deliberating for a while, Liz in the end chose two outfits, a short dark red velvet skirt with matching top and a long black dress.

“So Tabby, which one do you think I should wear?  Short and sexy or suave and sophisticated?”  Liz asked as her cat jumped on her bed.  The only response she got from the tabby cat was her scratching at Liz’s duvet cover with her claws.

“Hump!  You’re no use!.”  Liz replied, laying the two outfits down on her bed and picking up the cat.

After putting Tabby down on the landing floor outside and closing her bedroom door, Liz disappeared into the bathroom for a long, relaxing bath.  As the foam bubbles swallowed up her naked body, Liz laid back and enjoyed the feeling of the hot water.  No matter how stressed or worried she was, a long hot bath always seemed to relax her tense muscles, and that was definitely what she needed right then.  Stressed was an instatement as to how she was feeling about the party.  Part of her wished she’d stuck to her guns and said no to Alex, but the other part of her liked the idea of going to a party. It had been a long time since she’d been able to ‘doll’ herself up and look glamorous, so why shouldn’t she go all the way and make a really big effort.  As she closed her eyes, Liz found herself subconsciously making a decision on which outfit to wear.

“Mmm, the long black dress I think.”  She mumbled to herself as she used her foot to turn on the hot tap.  She didn’t care if the dress was over the top for the party, hey why not make an impression, she thought.

Nearly an hour later, Liz was busy pinning her hair half up, leaving a few strands to fall in front of her face.  After zipping up her dress, Liz sorted through her dressing table drawer, looking for a small box.  When she found the red velvet box, Liz carefully opened it and smiled to herself.  Inside was a gold heart shaped pendant, a present her father had given her before he’d left.  It was the only real expensive piece of jewellery she owned, although she rarely allowed herself to wear it in case it got damaged.  Clipping on a pair of sparkly ‘costume jewellery’ earrings and dabbing on a small amount of perfume, Liz then stood back and glanced at herself in the mirror.  The face that stared back at her didn’t seem real to Liz.  It had been a long time since she’d dressed up, and to her it felt like she was looking at different person.  She paused for a moment, touching her pendant and suddenly found herself wondering what her father would think of her now.  Would he think of her as a beautiful young lady, or just another ordinary young girl.  To Liz she couldn’t see her beauty, she didn’t see how her hair shone, her eyes sparkled and her smile literally lit up every room she walked into.  To her she was just a simple person with simple looks, it was only others that saw how stunning she was.

Taking a deep breath, and smiling tentatively at herself in the mirror, Liz picked up her jacket from her bed and headed downstairs to wait for her taxi to arrive.

Isabelle was busy applying her make up and getting ready for the party she was going to that night.  She had just under an hour and a half before Brad was coming to pick her up, and she wanted to look perfect.

“Off to another party Is?”  Max asked standing in the doorway to her room and watching his sister apply some eye shadow.

“Yeap, that’s right.”  She said pausing for a moment before continuing.  “You know what Max, you really should come with me, it might be fun.  Give you a chance to loosen up and relax a bit, hey maybe even find a girl!”

“You know how I feel about parties Is …….”  Max started before Isabelle interrupted.

“Please Max, I really think you need a break from work.  Look if you really hate it that much then you can just come home early.  Just give it a try, please?  For me?”  She replied sweetly, batting her eyelids at her brother.

“Ok, ok, no more sweet innocent ‘Isabelle looks’.  I’ll come, but if I’m bad company don’t blame me!”  He replied giving in to her persuasion, before heading to the bathroom for a shower.  Isabelle smiled to herself as she continued applying her make up, she knew just how to wrap Max around her little finger.  Batting her eyelids, pleading sweetly with that cute puppy dog eye look; it got Max every time!

A little while later, he emerged from the steaming shower, wrapped only in a white towel around his waist and headed back to his room.  Rummaging through his closet, he found his tux and pulled it out along with a crisp white shirt that was already ironed and black bow tie.  After putting on his trousers and shirt, Isabelle came into his room.

“Can you do up my dress Max?”  She asked throwing a dazzling smile at him.  Her dress was a silver sparkly halter neck dress that clung to her body, with a low back and high slit up the front.

“Wow, you look amazing Is.”  He said pulling the zip up and standing back to admire his sister.

“Thanks Max.”  She replied shyly.  He couldn’t deny it; his little sister was truly a stunner.  Her long blond hair hung loose around her shoulders with the ends curled slightly giving it some bounce; her make up accentuated her high cheekbones and wonderful smile.  And that dress!  He wasn’t even sure she should be allowed out in it!  The dress showed ever part of her body to the full, it was tight fitting, clinging and emphasizing her curved bust and hips.  Max suddenly felt glad he was going with his sister to the party.  She may be 25 years old, but he couldn’t help but feel protective of her.  He was only too aware that if he found her overwhelming the way she was dressed, every other guy at the party would look at her just the same way.

“Here, let me help you.”  She said, watching him struggle with his bow tie.

“Thanks, it’s been a while since I’ve had to wear one.  I think I’ve forgotten how to tie it!”  He joked.

“Never!”  She whipped back.  “Right, Brad will be here soon, so I’m gonna finish up getting ready.”  She added leaving his room.  Walking over to his mirror, Max proceed to comb and gel his hair so that it drooped over his forehead just the way he liked it.  After dabbing on some cologne, he grabbed his jacket and shoes before heading into the lounge.

Ten minutes later Brad arrived at their front door and rang the doorbell of their apartment, causing Isabelle to let out a loud squeal from her room and shout to Max to entertain him until she was ready.

“God what’s she doing in there!”  He joked to himself as he headed towards the front door.  He couldn’t understand how it could take his sister two hours to get ready for a party.  She was pretty enough as it was, what on earth could she be doing that took two hours?

“Max, hi mate, how’s it going?”  Brad asked, shaking his hand.

“Not bad thanks, come on in.”  Max replied beckoning the young guy into the house.
”Don’t tell me, she’s not ready yet?”  Brad joked.

“Mmm, something like that.  You know my sister way too well!”  Max bantered back.  The two guys exchanged light chitchat in the lounge until Isabelle eventually appeared in the hallway.

“Wow Is, you look ………. Wow!”  Brad exclaimed getting up and pulling his girlfriend into his arms.

“Thanks.”  She breathed against his lips as they kissed passionately.  Inside a few seconds their kiss had deepened as they grabbled at each other’s lips.  Pulling her body close to his, Brad encircled his arms around her body, feeling his way up to the bare skin the dress exposed.

Sitting on the cream coloured sofa, Max tried not to watch the young lovers.  Running his hand behind his neck, he tried to think of something other than Isabelle, and what Brad was doing to her in their living room.  Rubbing his hands together, Max couldn’t help but notice Brad’s hands moving over his sister’s body.  His hands roamed every inch of bare flesh the dress showed off, and that was a lot!  Seeing more than he needed to, Max decided to intervene and break up their clinch that threatened to spiral out of control.

”Erm, guys.  Look I’m sure you’ve got lots of catching up to do, I mean you haven’t seen each other in oh what is it?  Less than 24 hours?  But please, do me a favour and spare me the floor show!  I love you to bits Is, I just don’t need physical proof of where your relationship is at!  Now please, either take your hello’s into your room and away from me, or let’s get going!”  Max said with lightheartedness in his voice.

“Max!  I’m 25 for gods sake!  You may be able to live like a saint, but I can’t!”  Isabelle exasperated, rolling her eyes at her brother.
”Yeah I know, but I don’t need or want to watch it!”  He bantered back.

“Max is right though, we should get going.”  Brad interrupted, looking at his watch and realising it was nearly 8.00pm.

“Let’s go then.”  Max insisted, heading to the door.

It wasn’t that he was eager to get to the party, more like eager to show his face, pretend to have a good time and leave early.  He knew Isabelle was right; a party might make him feel better, and in his mind he hoped it might help take his mind off his feelings for a certain brunette secretary.
