Forever As One

By The Vengaboys

I wish I could turn back time

I wish I'd never have to see that look in your eyes

You really broke this heart of mine

Now it's time to realise it's forever goodbye

So here I am

All alone

Don't understand where did we go wrong

I can't stop crying

Can't take the pain

Knowing you won't ever be back again

And it cuts like a knife

I'm going insane

Wishing you would show me love

Once again

I'm losing my mind

But I have to carry on

We were meant to be together

Forever as one

So this is where the story ends

Gonna take some to dry the tears in my eyes

You told me we could still be friends

Now I know your promises were nothing but lies

So here I am

All alone

Don't understand where did we go wrong

I can't stop crying

Can't take the pain

Knowing you won't ever be back again

(Chorus)

And it cuts like a knife

I'm going insane

Wishing you would show me love

Once again

I'm losing my mind

But I have to carry on

We were meant to be together

Forever as one

PART 1

Feeling her hand stroking his shoulder through the leather jacket, Max felt physically  ill.  He could feel his skin crawling, his body attempting to pull away from her touch. His whole being felt sick, like he was going to heave at a moment as she continued to try to soothe him.  His stomach churned and flipped as he thought back to the events that had lead him to this very moment.

He’d gone over to see her, determined to persuade her to come to the Gomez concert with him.  He’d been so pleased his father had been able to secure the tickets, they were like gold dust, and he wanted nothing more than to take Liz on a date to the concert.

Yet he hadn’t banked on what was to face him.  He’d got the bottom of her ladder, and deliberated whether to call up.  He never normally entered without being invited, yet somehow his news was too important to wait for Liz’s approval.  So he’d stepped quietly up the metal steps to the fire escape, and swung his leg over when he reached the top.  He’d heard quiet voices, too quiet for him to heard at first.  He’d guess Liz was with Maria or Alex, but nothing had prepared him for what he found.

Stepping closer to her window, he peered inside.  Words failed him as his eyes drunk in the sight in front of them.  Liz, his Liz, was lying in her bed, with another man.  No, not just another man, his so called friend, the guy who’s life he’d saved only a few months before, Kyle Valenti.  Max had stood frozen for a few minutes, his eyes unable to look away, his feet rooted to the spot, his whole body frozen in time.

She’d looked back at him when she saw him, her eyes so full of sadness and so full of guiltiness.  She’d sat up slightly, allowing the cover to slip away and expose the creamy flesh of her leg, right up to her thigh.

The view of her silky skin had snapped Max out of his trance, he’d seen way too enough for his liking.  He’d turned on his heel, quick stepped it down the fire escape and ran.

He hadn’t known where he was running to, just running to wherever his feet took him, as far way from Liz Parker as possible.  In the end he’d finally stopped at the park the other side of the town.  He’d sat down and slowly tried to catch his breath.  Tears had stung his eyes, but Max had been determined not to shed them, he wouldn’t give her that pleasure too.  She’d robbed him of every single fantasy he’d dreamt of that night, everything that had ever meant something for him, disappeared in a single vision.

And so he found himself here, at the park, with the one person he wished hadn’t walked past when she did.  Although Tess was doing her best to console him and not ask too many questions, Max just wanted to be left alone.  He didn’t want her sympathy, or her constant reminders of their destiny, he only loved one person in the whole world, and she’d just shattered his heart.

“Tess, I appreciate your concern for me, but I’d really like some space right now.”
”I can’t leave you like this Max, it’s obvious something has happened to upset you.  Is it Liz?”  She enquired
”Tess ………”

“Max, you don’t need her.  Whatever she’s done, she isn’t worth it, don’t you understand, you’re not meant to be together.”

“Just stop it Tess!”  He yelled.  “I am not in the mood for another one of your destiny speeches.  I just want to be left alone.  You know absolutely nothing about me and Liz, and she is dam well worth it!”  He insisted.

“But ……..”  She started.

“Please, just go.”  He snapped.

“Fine!”  She snorted, before standing up and walking away.

Walking into the house, Max heard his mother’s familiar voice.

“Max, is that you?”  She called from the living room.
”Yeah.”  He replied, taking off his coat and hanging it up in the hallway.

“Where have you been, it’s late, I was worried.”   She said walking out to where her son was.

“Sorry, I was just walking around, I didn’t mean to worry you.”  He replied.

“Max?  Are you ok?”  She asked concerned.  Although he’d tried to put on a ‘happy’ front for his mother’s benefit, one part of him couldn’t be hidden by his mask.

His eyes gave away his true feelings, the one part of him that couldn’t lie no matter what.  She saw the sadness that ran deep in his veins, she saw the watery glistening of eyes that were staving off tears.

“I’m ok.”  He replied, his voice wavering slightly.

“You don’t seem ok, can I help at all?”
”I just need some time to myself.  I’m just tired.”
”Ok, well you should go off to bed then, it’s late.”  She replied, not convinced by his story.

Watching him walk away, Diane realised how little she knew about her son and his life.  Nowadays he always seemed so distant, his mind always a million miles away from where it should be.  She could tell he was obviously carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, something he always did.  She remembered back to when he was younger, Max was always the worrier.  He could always be relied upon to think up the worse case scenarios to problems, and always wanted to find solutions himself.  She wished for once her son would open up and let her in.  Let her help him with whatever it was that had upset him so much.

Sighing to herself, Diane returned to the film she’d been watching.  She knew that it was down to Max, he knew where she was if he needed help, and until then she’d just worry about him in silence.

Closing the door to his room, Max stripped off his trousers and t-shirt, before crawling into the sanctuary of his bed.  As he pulled the cool covers over his bare chest, Max could hold back on the tears no longer.  Blinking a couple of times, two tears escaped and slipped down his cheeks.  His heart felt like it had been smashed into ten thousand pieces, never to feel the joy of being whole again.  Pain and heartache washed over his body as he allowed more tears to cascade down his face, finally succumbing to the terrible feelings he had inside him.

Each time he closed his eyes, his mind replayed the awful events of that night, harbouring on the view he had seen when looking into Liz’s window, and the look she had given him back.  He hadn’t actually caught them ‘doing’ anything, but it was obvious by the guilty look Liz had given him that something had happened.  How else could you explain two naked teenagers in a double bed together, something had to have happened.

Trying desperately to push the images to the back of his mind, Max tried to make peace with his body.  He was so used to falling asleep with a kaleidoscope of images of Liz filling his mind, and now those images only fuelled the pain he was feeling.

She’d ripped his heart out that night, held it in her hand and squashed it until it stopped beating, Max felt like he had no heart any more.  Without Liz what was the point in carrying on, what reason did he have to get up each morning, carry on with his charade of a ‘normal’ life, what was the point in even living?

Sleep was nearly impossible that night, he couldn’t remove Liz from his brain.  Eventually, his tears abated, and he finally got a few hours of restless sleep.  Yet in the dreams he had during his subconsciousness, Liz returned and haunted him, pictures of her happy and smiling mixed with the images of her and Kyle basking in the after effects of the love they’d shared.

As she sat in her bed, Liz dragged her knees up to her chest and rested her chin on them.  She couldn’t deny it, she felt dreadful.  She knew what she’d done was for the good of mankind, it had to be done to safe Michael, Isabelle and the rest of the world, but why did he have to choose her?  She’d gone through so much that day, it felt like it had lasted an eternity.

From Future Max’s sudden appearance, to his announcement that they had to change the future, she had to make the present Max fall out of love with her.  She’d tried, she’d gone to Max to talk to him.  She’d started by blurting out some reference to Romeo and Juliet, and their tragically doomed relationship.  Although the reference was poignant for that moment, in truth she’d said it to stall what she had really come to tell him.

She’d finally gone for it, telling him that she knew his life would always be dangerous, but her’s didn’t have to be.  She’d told him she wanted to be in love with normal boys, see her 21st birthday, have a wedding day, and most importantly have children, and know those children would be safe

But worse of all, Liz had told him that although she loved him; she didn’t want to die for him.  In truth, her words couldn’t have been further wrong.  She knew in her heart she’d do absolutely anything for Max Evans; even die for him if it came to that.  He was more than just a good friend, and potential lover, he was her life and she knew she would do anything for him.

Yet her speech hadn’t worked, he still completely loved her.  So she’d persuaded Kyle to help her out, to pretend they’d slept together, so Max would see them and finally hate Liz.

Future Max had thought it wasn’t a good idea, he’d never be jealous of Kyle, but Liz was all out of other plans.  No matter how many times she told herself it was for the best, it would save everyone, the look on Max’s face when he caught them was profound.  He had a look of disbelief, shock, hurt, anger but most of all sadness.  It was a look that Liz knew she’d carry around with her for the rest of her life.  She’d broken not only his heart, but her own heart that night.

Her tiny body trembled as she sobbed into her covers.  She felt so worthless, she’d broken a good man, a special man, and she couldn’t tell him why.  Max would never know she’d done it for them, for their friends, this time she was the martyr.

Her own happiness had been sacrificed and shattered that night, she knew no matter what Max would never be able to forgive her for what he thought she’d done.  He’d probably never even speak to her, not that she felt she deserved it.  She’d ended her own life that night too, she loved him so much, and Liz knew at that moment she’d never love anyone so completely again.  Max Evans was her one and only love.

The thoughts flying through her mind, mixed with her grief and tears, made Liz feel very ill.  Her stomach was churning, and despite her best efforts, the nauseous feeling that was flooding her body refused to abate.  Throwing back the covers she ran to her bathroom, and couldn’t stop her body throwing up.  Leaning over the toilet, her stomach retched until there was nothing left to empty

Once she calmed her stomach, Liz laid down on the cool tiles of her bathroom, and allowed the tears to tumble once again.  In her heart she knew she deserved every ounce of pain that she was feeling, she’d broken the heart of the man she loved that night.
