Notes:
It is the first time I have responded to a challenge, so I hope I’ve
done it justice!!! At the Crashdown “So
Liz, has he asked you yet?” Maria
asked taking the plate of food from the counter. “No,
and I’m beginning to think he won’t. Every
time I see him, he looks like he’s going to say something, but then something
happens or he goes all shy.” Liz
replied. “Come
on girl, it’s the 90’s how about using some of that ‘girl power’.” “Huh?” “If
he won’t ask you, then why don’t you ask him?” “What
if he says no?” “I
guess you’ve always got Kyle to fall back on.”
Maria said playfully. “Oh
no, I’d rather go on my own then give Kyle any ideas!”
Liz replied smiling. “Where
is Max today?” “So
why don’t you take an early break, and go and see him.
Here take him some cake.” Maria
said picking up a piece from under the glass dome and handing the plate to Liz. “Oh
I don’t know …….” “Liz!
Go!” Maria ordered as her
best friend smiled. As
she walked down the stairs into the UFO Centre, Liz felt apprehensive.
It was going to take a lot of courage for her to ask Max to the Summer
Ball at school, what if he said no, or worse still, what if he already had a
date but just hadn’t got around to telling her.
Just as she had talked herself into turning round and going back to the
sanctuary of the Crashdown, she heard a familiar voice. “Liz,
hi.” He said surprised to see
her. “Hi,
I bought you some cake.” She said
holding out the plate and feeling awkward. “Oh,
thanks.” He replied taking the
plate. “So
….. how’s business today?” She
said trying desperately to break the embarrassing silence that had descended on
them. *How’s business, could I
sound more dumb?* she thought. “Ok
I guess.” He replied sensing
there was something more “Is something wrong Liz?” “Are
you sure?” He asked “Ok,
I was going to ask you something.” She
said taking a deep breath. “Sure,
ask away?” “Max,
I need you over here.” Milton
called “Great
timing! ……. I’ll be back in a sec, don’t go anywhere.”
Max said before heading off in the direction of his boss’s voice.
“Everybody
get down, nobody move!” Someone
yelled as the main doors of the UFO Centre burst open. A hooded man surged in as the few people in the Centre
screamed. People started to run,
but this made the hooded man angrier and yell once again. “I
said nobody move, or I’ll shoot someone!”
He yelled again waving his gun in the air.
Max looked up from where he was; his immediate concern was for Liz’s
safety. As he peered around the
information booth, he could see her by the far wall, standing with a hysterical
woman. “Shut
up!” The man hollered at the
woman. No matter how Liz tried to
calm the lady, she was still crying hysterically. “I
said shut up!” The man screamed
pointing the gun in the direction of the woman.
The next few seconds seemed to happen in slow motion for Max, he could
see the gun pointed in Liz’s direction, and suddenly the loud sound of the gun
going off rang around the UFO Centre. As
he looked towards her, he saw her slide down the wall and slump into a heap,
blood was starting to soak her tight yellow top, and he could see she was
seriously hurt. He knew he had to
get to her “Liz!”
Max screamed starting to get up. “Don’t
move, or I’ll shoot you too!” “She’s
hurt, I want to help her.” Max
said trying to reason with him. “I
said get back down on the floor or I’ll shoot you too! … I mean it!”
The man insisted. Max knew it was a loosing battle, as he sat down on the
floor, he looked back in the direction of Liz.
She was extremely pale, and lifeless, her eyes were just about open, and
he could see the evident pain etched over her face; he felt so helpless. Thirty
minutes later, and a voice could be heard outside in the street. “Yeah
I hear you.” The man called back
gruffly. “Tell
me what it is you want.” “What
I want? Who says I want
anything?” The man called back. “I
know you raided the bank in Clifton Rise.”
Jim Valenti replied calmly. “How
do you know that?” He asked “Because
someone recognised you. Why don’t
you give yourself up and let those people go, I am sure the courts would go easy
on you if you co-operated.” “Let
them go then. You don’t want a
murder charge against you as well as robbery and kidnap do you?” “Ok,
but just you.” The man insisted.
Handing his gun to a deputy, Jim Valenti walked towards the door, as he
stepped inside, he quickly noted roughly how many people were in the room, about
20 he guessed, then he saw the injured girl. “Liz,
can you hear me?” Jim said
kneeling down beside her and looking at the blood covering her top. “Mmm.”
She mumbled through the pain that was ransacking her body. “I’m
going to pick you up, I’ll try to be gentle.”
He said putting his hands underneath her and slowly standing up.
The moan of pain she let out ripped through Max, he felt so helpless, she
was in so much pain, what if she died, he could save her if only he could get
close enough. As he watched the
sheriff walk back out, Max pushed all images of Liz to the back of his mind, he
couldn’t think about her, he had to concentrate on what they could do to get
out. Two
hours into the siege Max was beginning to get restless.
He had to know how Liz was, and needed to get out of the Centre.
The hooded man was beginning to get careless, not as alert to people
moving as he had been at the beginning. As
man sat down on a vacant chair a short distance from Max, he saw him put he gun
down for a few seconds. Seizing his
chance, Max lunged towards the gun, knocking it out of the reach of the man,
towards one of the visitors. A
struggle between Max and the hooded man ensued, and went on for a few minutes,
as they exchanged blows, before Sheriff Valenti and his deputies burst in and
took control. “You
did well Max, but you shouldn’t have done that.”
Jim Valenti said sternly to the young lad. “He
hurt Liz, I had to do something, how is she?”
He asked concerned “She
went to hospital, I don’t know how she is, her parents are with her.” “Ok.”
Max said heading out towards the sunlight.
Waiting outside for him were Isabel and Michael. “Oh
god Max, I thought you were going to get hurt.”
Isabel said throwing her arms around her brother. “I’m
ok Is, but I want to see Liz.” He
insisted “Sure,
Maria went with her, let’s go.” Michael
said heading towards the jeep. “I
think I’ll drive Max, you don’t look like you’re in the right frame of
mind to keep it on the road.” Isabel
said walking around to the driver’s side. As
soon as they got to the hospital, Max found Liz’s parents waiting in outside
her room. “Max,
are you ok? You got out, what
happened?” Maria asked “It’s
a long story. Can I see Liz?”
Max asked looking at Liz’s father “Sure,
but don’t stay long, she is supposed to be resting.”
Jeff replied looking tired as he hugged his wife.
As he walked into her room, he looked at Liz lying on the hospital bed.
“Liz.”
He said softly as he took hold of her hand. “Max,
are you ok?” She whispered. “Yeah,
I’m fine, it’s you I’m worrying about right now.” “I
can help with the pain.” He said
starting to move his hand towards her bandage. “No
Max, they’ll get suspicious.” “I’ll
be ok Max, the painkillers are starting to take effect, I’ll be ok.” “If
you’re sure. I felt so helpless
when I saw you get hurt, I wanted to rush over to you, but I knew I
couldn’t.” “Why
did you come, you were going to say something, but we never got a chance to
finish our conversation.” “No
tell me Liz, please.” He
insisted. “I
was going to ask you to the Summer Ball next week.” She said quietly. “Aren’t
I supposed to ask you?” ”It’s
ok, will you go with me?” The night of the Summer Ball “Liz,
are you sure you are up to going out tonight?”
Her mother said concerned as she watched Liz struggle to pin up her
curled hair.” “Here
Liz, let me help.” Maria said
seeing her friend struggle with her glittery hair pins.
When she had finished, Maria stood back and admired her friend, Liz
really did look beautiful. The few
soft curls that fell beside her face finished her look off perfectly. “Liz
you look really great.” She said
hugging her friend. “Thanks
Maria, I hope Max thinks so.” “You
look pretty hot yourself Ms De Luca, Michael won’t know what’s hit him!”
Liz replied smiling at her friend through the mirror. “Girls,
Max and Michael are here.” Jeff
called upstairs. “We’ll
be down in a minute dad.” Liz
called back as her and Maria giggled. “You
go first Maria.” Liz said as they
got to the top of the stairs. As
she walked down the stairs, the shimmery blue tight dress glistened in the hall
light. All Michael could do was
stand by the front door with his mouth open wide. “Wow
Maria, you look …… wow.” “I’ll
take that as a compliment.” She said gently kissing him.
Hearing her friend had made it downstairs, Liz knew it was her turn.
Lifting up the bottom of her dress so she didn’t tread on it, Liz
descending down to her date. Her
strapless, figure hugging burgundy velvet dress swayed gently as she walked
carefully down the stairs. “Liz
……. You look perfect.” Max
said sweeping her up in his arms and holding her tight. “Thanks,
you look good yourself.” She
replied as Max smiled. “Time
to go then.” Michael said taking
Maria’s hand. “Don’t
be too late Liz, you know you’re supposed to be taking it easy.” “I’m
sorry, we wanted to hire a better car, but the jeep was all we could afford.”
Max apologised helping Liz into the car. “This
is perfect, really Max.” Liz
replied as Max started the car. The
hall was already filling up with couples, and the band was in full swing when
they arrived just after 8.00pm. “I
didn’t know Alex’s band was playing tonight.”
Liz said to Isabel. “They
weren’t supposed to, but the other band cancelled yesterday, so Alex stepped
in instead.” Isabel said
adjusting the strap of her dress. “We’re
going to take a break now, but here’s a song for all you lovebirds out there,
Eric Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight. Now
I want to see all you couples on the dance floor.
Alex said putting down his guitar and heading towards Isabel
“May I have this dance madam?” Alex
said holding out his hand to his date. “I’d
love too.” Isabel replied
giggling with Liz. “Hey
don’t laugh, come on.” Max said
grabbing Liz’s hand and dragging her to the dance floor.
The temperature in the hall went up a few degrees as more teenage couples
took to the floor and danced close to each other. “You
really look stunning tonight Liz.” Max
said softly. “Thanks.”
She replied staring back into his eyes.
They were so soulful, so beautifully mysterious, she wondered sometimes
what was going on inside his head when he looked at her.
As she stared, he bent his head down and lightly brushed his lips past
hers. A tingle went through her body like a lightening strike, and
as he kissed again, this time with more passion, she felt like she was floating
around the dance floor. Max and Liz
were so engrossed in each other, they didn’t notice the song had ended. “Hey
lovebirds, you’re supposed to come up for air.”
Michael chirped “What?”
Max said looking confused. “The
song finished five minutes ago, you two are hopeless!”
Isabel exasperated. “Sorry.”
Liz replied looking equally flushed as Max. “Come
on, let’s get some air.” Max
said taking her hand and leading her towards the exit. “We
won’t see them for the rest of the evening now!”
Maria replied smiling. “I
don’t know what you mean Ms De Luca, do you want to go outside as well?” “Could
have potential!” Maria smiled
taking Michael’s hand. Finding
a quiet area behind the school hall, Max and Liz became close once again.
He nuzzled at her bare neck, nibbled at her bare shoulders, and as he
felt her curves through her soft dress, Max imagined what it would be like to
touch her bare skin. As his hands
wandered down her sides, Liz cried out in pain. “Ouch!”
“Oh
god Liz I’m so sorry, I forgot.” He
said looking at his hand over where she had been shot. “It’s
ok really Max, It’s just a bit sore still.”
She replied “I
can help with that if you like? Although
it will mean you’ll have to take that beautiful dress off” He replied
looking suggestively at her. “I
can’t, not here, too public, how about the girls locker room?” She offered. “Ok.”
He replied as she lead the way. Using
his powers to open the lock, they quickly disappeared inside the deserted room. “So
I have to take this off.” She
said seductively. “That’s
right I’m afraid.” He replied
trying to look innocent. “Promise
you won’t look?” “Where
did it hurt again?” He said
huskily as he placed his arms around her stomach and caressed her neck with his
lips. “Mmm,
that feels good.” She said “How
about the pain?” He asked “Gone
already.” She replied totally
engrossed in how he was making her feel. Turning
her round, Max took Liz’s lips once again in a passionate embrace. Forgetting totally where she was, Liz concentrated solely on
the wonderful kiss, making her feel dizzy with love.
As they embraced, Max gently slipped off the thin straps of her dress,
leaving her bare from the waist up. Leading
her to a nearby bench, Max looked deep into Liz’s eyes to gauge her reaction
to him having removed her straps. He
thought there would be reservation or doubt in her eyes, but all he saw was the
pure love that ran through her for him. “I
want you Max, more than I have ever before.” “I
don’t want to stop like before, make tonight perfect, please.” She whispered into his ear as he drew in a deep breath.
He knew what she was saying, and it was what he wanted too,
subconsciously they both knew what they were going to do when they had snuck
into the empty room. “Are
you sure, I don’t want to hurt you Liz.”
He said worrying about her injury “You won’t Max, please.” She replied looking at him with eyes full of emotion.
Placing
his hand over her bandage, he looked back into her eyes, and slowly, sensually
kissed her once again, while taking away the pain of her injury.
Slowly slipping her hands from around his waist, Liz carefully unbuttoned
his shirt, exposing his bare muscular chest.
As she moved her hands over his skin she felt a flood of passion wash
over her body, the feelings overwhelmed her and she involuntarily shuddered
underneath him. “Are
you scared Liz?” He whispered. “A
little I guess, but I love you Max, and I want you to be my first, my only love.
I want to feel close to you tonight, closer than we have before.” “So
do I.” He replied running his
hand over her arm and kissing her passionately once again.
An
hour later, Liz and Max walked back though the doors of the dance looking
slightly dishevelled. “Oh
they eventually return!” Isabel
said sarcastically. “Sorry
Is, did you miss us?” Max asked “You’ve
been gone for ages, what have you been up to?”
She asked innocently. Max
and Liz didn’t reply, they just smiled softly at each other. “I
saw that look, what’s going on Max?” Isabel
probed. “Nothing.” “Oh
look, Maria is going to sing, come on Max, lets dance.”
Liz said pulling Max away from Isabel’s grilling. “Thanks,
I wasn’t sure how many more questions I could dodge.”
He said taking her in his arms once again. “That’s
ok, I just wanted to be close to you again.”
She replied “Definitely
not, I love you Max Evans.” “I
love you too Liz Parker.” He replied kissing her soft lips for the umpteenth
time that night. “I
drank too much last night, got bills to pay, my head just feels in pain.
I missed the bus and there’ll be hell today, I’m late for work again.
And even if I’m there, they’ll all imply that I might not last the
day, and then you call me and it’s not so bad, it’s not so bad.”
Maria sang “
….. and I want to thank you for giving my the best day of my life. And oh just to be with you is having the best day of my
life.” Liz mouthed the words to
Max, the two of them lost in their own world, totally oblivious of everyone
dancing around them. In their eyes,
they were the only couple on the dance floor, totally engrossed in singing to
each other the words of the song. As
they danced around the dance floor once more, Liz knew life didn’t get any
better than that night. Here she
was wrapped in Max Evans’ arms, having just made love to him for the first
time, she knew at that moment, she would never have another soul mate. Max Evans was her one and only love. THE END
