Title: Rumbles In The Night
Summary: Response to Jen's food challenge. This is set in an original universe. I have a whole novel planned in this universe, but I've written all of 1000 words <g> and never shown *anyone*. Would love any suggestions/constructive criticism. Thanks, guys!
Disclaimer: Not freakin' necessary!
Thanks to: Jen, Dot, Vic, and Pete, as always.
Kevin Thrump was eating chocolate mousse.
It was rich and velvety, with almonds sprinkled on top and just the right amount of cream mixed in. He groaned in bliss as the next mouthful melted onto his tongue.
Something nudged his leg.
He woke up.
A moose stood next to his bed. It was staring at him with a faintly puzzled expression on its face. Its breath was hot and smelly on his face.
Kevin sat up so fast his head spun. He inched back against the wall. "Oh, rats, not again," he sighed. "Dammit, I have to learn to spell better. DAD!"
He heard a thump from the room next door. His father ran in, clutching his head. "Ow," Dad said. "What's wrong - oh."
"Yeah, oh," Kevin snapped. "I thought the lessons you gave me were gonna fix this?!"
Dad sat on the end of the bed, keeping a wary eye on the moose. The moose seemed happy enough to stand still for the moment. "I'm sorry, Kevin." Dad patted his leg. "I thought the shields I trained you to use would be strong enough to contain your talent. It's all I needed when I was your age. Obviously, I was rang."
"You mean 'wrong'," Kevin said. In spite of himself, he smiled. It was so hard to get angry at Dad. He didn't know any better. "Dad," he said gently, "you need to watch your hair, too. It's green again."
"Soop," said Dad guiltily. Kevin didn't bother to correct him. "I've been back on Earth for six months and I still can't get that right."
"Don't worry about it, Dad."
Dad frowned in concentration. His hair - rippled - and returned to its "normal" light brown.
The moose started nibbling the curtains.
Kevin inclined his head towards it. "We can't keep it, can we? It's kinda cute."
"The rabbits from Easter are eating us out of home and house, Kevin," Dad said mildly. "I think I can fix things. I'm sure there's a zoo that would love a moose." He closed his eyes.
Kevin closed his, too. He could *nearly* see how Dad did it. The moose disappeared with a -pop!- of displaced air and a surprised grunt. "Thanks, Dad," Kevin said. "Um, can we not tell Mum?"
"I think she doesn't need any more reminders that we're not quite the same as she is," Dad said, smiling. He ruffled Kevin's hair and left the room.
Kevin slipped back under the covers and tried not to think of pumpkin pie, another favourite. He didn't want to wake up in a real life version of _Cinderella_.
