Snyder smacked the side of his monitor. It stayed black. "Typical," he growled.
He turned to the window and gazed out. The children were in the schoolyard, being children. He spotted Buffy Summers walking past, talking to Xander Harris. "Pair of troublemakers," he muttered. "I don't know why I put up with them."
His computer bleeped.
"Huh?" He spun around. The screen flashed blue, so bright that he had to cover his eyes. When he brought his hands back down again, he saw a man.
On his screen.
Staring at him.
"Hello?" Snyder said. He peered at the strange man, careful not to touch the screen in case someone had messed with it.
The man smiled, showing a mouthful of white, even teeth. "Hello," he said. "Sorry about this. Something's obviously gone wrong with our computers."
"I know that feeling," Snyder said. He relaxed, and pulled his chair out. He slumped backwards into it. "Nothing ever works right around here."
The man looked closely at him, and rubbed a hand over his shaven head. "Funny you should mention that," he murmured. "Are you interested in a job? I just had someone quit. Our bartender."
"Your bartender," Snyder said cautiously, not sure if the offer was genuine.
The man leaned back and tugged on his black and grey uniform. "Have you ever heard of a place called 'Deep Space Nine'?"
